same here. game resets with saving ram. I assume it's probably cause the console must stop running the ROM in order to save to SD?

If you get an 8bitdo retro receiver for SNES, and you have a wiimote, you can plug your SNES Classic controller into your wiimote, and pair the wiimote with your retro-receiver you can then do what you wish. I do this with the NES Classic controllers and a wiimote, because I prefer original OEM controllers and in part because the wiimote seems to have better communication with retro-receivers than the 8bitdo controllers.
