Zoombox - verdict in

The resolution on the Zoombox video projector is too low to bother with. I knew it was too good to be true for that kind of money. 557 x 234.The pocket-projector sounds interesting but it looks like the dim LED technology used might be a dead-end.Early Zoombox projector review

Yamato Rebirth

After shutting down my MySpace page, and in recognition of the nonexistent blogging potential at Facebook, I thought I'd use this blog as my dumping ground for observations about gadgets and pop culture, especially when they tie into nostalgic themes.   Last year when "JJ Trek" came out, I was quite merciless in my criticism of it, both aesthetically and storywise. I also never warmed up to the new Battlestar Galactica. And I am not a fan of the Star Wars prequels, to put it mildly.   And

Xtranormal

I think I'm a little late to the party and my instincts tell me this startup may not be around too much longer but man, this is the most fun I've had since Software Automatic Mouth.   LINK   I swear I've laughed more in the last couple days than I have in the last 20 years combined.   A news article on it.   If this company goes out of business I am going to be so pissed. After all these years I've finally found a way to make movies in a way that gives me near instant gratification. If

Whither GP2X reviews?

10 days after the release and I can't seem to find a single hands-on review of the GP2X anywhere. I only found one blog site that had a video clip of the guy goofing with it (not playing movies) and no substantial information. What I haven't figured out yet is how it handles its TV out. It would be better if, when playing higher resolution video files, it output at maybe 640x480. My guess is that it still downconverts to 320x240 which will make high quality DIVX files look like video CDs on TV

What I've been up to

I hesitate to post a blog entry but I know a few people here have some interest in knowing what's going on in my life beyond classic gaming, so I'll offer this update.   Last summer I freaked out because Xtranormal went out of business and I thought that was my E-ticket ride to a career-change. Well, here we are entering the following summer, and even though I helped with the liquidation, I don't have a job with the buyer, so I dragged my tail between my legs and I have another web dev job to

Warblade addiction

It's been a long time since I've really really been involved in a single game. I think the last time was circa 2000 when I had 5 coinop machines. I was putting a LOT of time into playing Star Castle and Rastan. (BTW, when is someone going to finally find a way to emulate the sound on Cinematronics games??) Anyway, I think I've blogged about Warblade before, but it's my favorite overall game of all time. The reason I like it so much is that it takes every possible aspect from a shootemup and

Verion 10.0 status

Right before thanksgiving I started a forum topic Chimera Queues Brainstorming. The concensus there was that the LPC2103's limited RAM and the slow SRAM speed was going to constrain the system too much. This caught me a little off-guard and has caused me to change priorities. I didn't want to significantly increase the cost of the cart to add extra hardware that was not needed by the Supercharger subsystem. With the 2103, I think we could say we hit that sweet-spot. But by moving to the 236

Variable length queues

After a very late night on Delicon's part, we managed to get queues functional again on the revision 10.0 boards. In order to make the timing work, you need to toggle a read/write mode hotspot but I don't think that will be a big limitation. When writing, you also have to leave at least two cycles between writing again. This would normally not be an issue unless you are writing the same value successively.   At the tail end we were able to add a very important feature. You can now have var

The Treadmill

I think one of the reasons I'm still into classic videogames is I've always stayed on the sidelines of the computer hardware treadmill. I had a Playstation 1 when it first came out, and then proceeded to get very few games for it. I had a PS2 as well and didn't buy many games for it. And don't get me started on PC games. My rig has never been where it should have been to facilitate cutting edge gaming, and so I keep procrastinating on getting into games. The most recent PC upgrade was a Pen

The Madness of PCs

I was a little hesitant to try building my own PC. Every time I do it, I run into some snag somewhere, but this was the only way for me to really be choosy about components. The ASUS H57 motherboard has a lot more slots in it than the Gateway and Dell systems I considered. Anyway, sure enough, I've hit a snag. Because graphics cards keep sucking more juice, the ATX power supply standards have changed. All this in the last few years apparently. So I go down to the electronics store and buy

Supercharger autoload (and random access)

Here is a zipfile with all the required elements (except for Tera Term itself) to perform supercharger autoloading.   When I ran the Supercharger programming contest I was hoping someone would run with this idea. The good thing about this is that it is forward-compatible. As long as your game only uses one controller port, you can leave these hooks in and it won't hurt anything for CC2 or Chimera (when the time comes). So if you were writing a large Supercharger game you could do it knowing

Subnotebooks

I read Engadget every day and I think I found a gadget I really want. I've been shopping around for a laptop for a long time. The only time I really NEED a laptop is when I'm entertaining my daughter away from home, and even then it's dependent on me establishing a bluetooth dialup networking connection through my cellphone (which might not be possible with my plan) so since it isn't an essential purchase, but I've been looking for a subnotebook/tablet for a long time. Something fast enough t

Steve Jobs Medical Problems

I think Steve Jobs is not long for this earth. He seems to want to ignore or be in denial of his medical problems, and I wonder whether this hasn't just magnified his medical problems rather than taking time off earlier for treatment. The case of Jim Henson's hesitation to seek treatment for pneumonia comes to mind. I really think Jobs' attitude towards his own health will be his undoing, and the company's privacy shield around him only further enables this dysfunction.

Status update

OK, we're at enough of a milestone here to justify an official blog post.   Here is what's been going on.   First off, we didn't get the accuracy in the paddle reads that we wanted from the new isolated ADCs. Delicon tried to implement a more 2600-like reading approach using the ARM's "Capture" facilities but it also is a little jittery. In both cases, close but no cigar. So instead of holding up the project just for paddles, we decided to adjust the expansion port pinout to align the cap

Startup company

I'm not sure if it's appropriate or not to mention it here, but I'm in the process of starting a company and I'm looking for co-founders.   I know that within the videogame scene there are those who have gone on to work in programming or the modern game industry. I would like to network with the right people and I'm not able to do do this at my dayjob.   I'm specifically looking for people with Unity3D experience.   If anyone reads this and gets curious, PM me.

Starblazers (Yamato) Producer dies

The irony of this is unreal.   I mean, falling off his own ship called Yamato. I guess that's the way to go, albeit tragic, like so much of his life after he found fame with the show.

Splitsville - White Dwarf

Splitsville is a band that wrote a song called Atari 2600 which I licensed for Stella at 20 and the Stella Gets a New Brain v.2 CD.   I thought this song was pretty good and had some Atari-like connections in it, so enjoy:

Speech Synthesizers

I've actually had a lot of experience working with speech synthesizers. Back in the day I had S.A.M. That program completely captivated me. I'd say it was one of the best things I remember about the Atari 8-bit. It's also why I was sorely disappointed by the 1400XL prototype I picked up when I learned that its Votrax chip did not allow you to adjust all of the vocal attributes. I had always wished I had an Alien Voice Box because that thing supposedly could sing. I think that used the same

Space Race

I thought I'd enter a blog on this even though I don't know whether this will really mature into a project or not.I'd like to see if I can write a port of the 1973 Atari coinop title Space Race. This should be VERY simple other than the process of drawing the starfield. I asked about this on Stellalist and got some derision for distracting myself from Death Derby But this game really is quite simple outside of the stars. I'm itching to finish a game off quickly so I can feel some sense of per

Serial fileserver

I am kind of amused at my own hacking skills here. One thing that we were going to have to do with Chimera was allow a serial "fallback" for game loading. Removable storage was not part of the original specs for Chimera. So we were going to be constrained by whatever flash chip was installed in it (currently 2MB). Once you fill up your games, you have to keep juggling things around. And for embedded Chimera games, the game would be read-only or maybe just allow limited space for other title
