Will Tron: Legacy tank at the box office?

"Tank"... get it?     Tron: Legacy is a huge unknown, and a big risk for Disney. The original film, while widely 'recognized' as innovative, was hardly boffo box office. However, the arcade game was a huge success, and a dedicated group of hard-core Tron nerds have kept the digital flame alive for nearly 30 years. So Disney obviously must see some potential here, or they wouldn't take the risk, right?   Well, Disney has also produced its fair share of box office bombs over the years. Th

Will the WRC return to competitiveness?

Admittedly, I've hardly been paying any attention to the World Rally Championship (WRC) for the past two years. For starters, there hasn't been any U.S. TV coverage. No surprise there - we don't even get Rally America Championship races. All we get are GRC highlights, which is hardly rallying. Velocity does carry ERC highlights - at 5:00 AM Sunday mornings - but they don't start running them until the season is almost over. But at least it's something, and it's a lot more competitive than the W

Why Pixar doesn't have anything to worry about...

…maybe. So, a friend of mine who worked on Chicken Little recently invited me to a screening of it at the El Capitan theater in Hollywood, in 3D, for members of the visual effects industry. I should point out that he left Disney a year-and-a-half ago. He’s feeling much better now. While the theater was mostly full, there were maybe six or eight kids in the theater. The rest were all adults. I think this tended to result in a more “honest” reaction to the film. If the place was packed with ki

Who's the leader of the club...

...that's made for you and me? Well, it's sure not Michael Eisner anymore. Eisner has severed all ties with Disney as of today, stepping down from the board of directors. And all I can say is, "it's about time". In recent years under Eisner, Disney Feature Animation has been an oppressive, depressive environment akin to a terminal patient ward at a hospital. People who had been loyal to Disney for years just couldn't bring themselves to re-sign their contracts, because of the appalling mis

Who watches the Watchmen?

Well, on a Friday afternoon matinee, that would have been about eight people.   Some 20+ years ago, I read Watchmen when it first came out as a limited series comic book. It didn't pick up the "graphic novel" moniker until a later reissue. But even during its first run, it was still widely (or wildly) heralded as a masterpiece.   I really don't remember much about it, other than it seemed to take forever for DC to get all twelve issues out, and after the first run-through, I don't think I ev

When is a cartoon not a "cartoon"?

When it's an "animated film". This year's Walter and Gracie Lantz Animation Prize winner, Yonatan Tal, said the other night when accepting the award, "We can make cartoons... but we'd rather make animation." That's a pretty interesting distinction, and one that wasn't lost on me when watching our student films this year. For many of the films, they felt less like traditional cartoons, and more like short stories that happened to be animated. As with last year, and the 22 years that preceded

And then...     Up next, the shocking penultimate episode!! Don't miss it!!   (Okay... actually, you won't miss it. This isn't some limited edition version of the comic strip. I'm saving that for the "prototype episode".  )   3 < PreviousIndexNext >

Wheeee! We? Oui.

I had the chance to play with a Wii at a friend's house this weekend. We played Wii Sports and Wii Play, and I was blown away by how fun some of the mini-games were. Sure, not all of them were to my liking, but there were enough keepers in there that the Wii has moved onto my "must have" list.   The interactivity of the games is completely addictive. For example, Wii bowling really "feels" like bowling, except without having to put on the smelly rental shoes or trying to find a ball that fits

Whatever Rally Championship

For each of the past several years, I've posted a blog entry about the WRC (World Rally Championship). But the series has gotten so predictably boring over the last several years, there's little point to it. Someone named Sebastien wins most of the races, then the championship, and everyone else sort of flails along behind.   This entry, more likely than not, will just sit here as a season-long placeholder, in case something interesting happens.   But so far, this year, it's more of the same

What's this? A short blog entry?

A few quick things (well... quick to type them up anyway): The RPS label is done! Billy really liked the final artwork, and plans to get back to working on the game soon. As a side note, Billy also had me create some new sprites for the game. So I'm anxious to see how they work out. Speaking of sprites, the next 2600 project I need to work on are some sprites for Manuel's port of Colony 7. (Thought I forgot, didn't you Manuel?) After that, I'll be coloring Jess Ragan's artwork for

Welcome to the basement!

So, MLB Spring Training begins next week.   That magical* time of year, when baseball fans from across the league look forward to the new season with hope and expectations.   Especially those fans whose teams sucked last year.   Like my home team - Seattle.   Yes... we've had a few bad years up there. Bad signings (Chone Figgins - I'm looking at you), veteran players who faltered (Ichiro Suzuki - I'm looking at you), repeated injuries (Franklin Gutierrez - I'm looking at you... a whole b

Weeks have "ends"?

Looks like I'm going to be keeping busy for awhile. In addition to working on the Solar Plexus artwork (which now has the shading done) and the accompanying tutorial (which is taking more time than the actual artwork), I've also got another couple of projects just handed to me:One is the manual for RPS. I haven't done a 2600 manual before, but my background was originally in graphic design, so I'm looking forward to it. I've got a couple of ideas for it I'd like to try, and it will be nice to hav

Weekend Warrior

Three-day weekend!   Monday is President's Day, where we combine the birthdays of Washington and Lincoln, and use it as an excuse to go shopping.   I mean... reflect on our nation's history.   Okay. Shopping. Or, lazily sit on our butts and enjoy the day off.   Which is what I plan to do. More or less.   Actually, this weekend is a good chance to knock some stuff off my "to-do" list: I'm working on the Juno First sprites, and should have the first pass wrapped up today (I posted a sne
