Warcraft - Orcs & Humans

Hi there!   Interplaying Warcraft - Orcs & Humans (1994):     Okay, featuring this one within Interplaying is debatable, but Interplay did publish this one in Germany   After a series of SNES games (Lost Vikings, Rock'n'Roll Racing, ...), Blizzards first totally PC centric development helped establishing the RTS genre which was kickstarted by Herzog 2 and further advanced by Dune 2 before.   Laying foundation to the fantasy universe that should evolve into "World of Warcraft" a d

Playing The Sentinel (Amiga)

Hi there!   Not to be confused with "Sentinel", the Starmaster like shmup from Synapse, this is about The Sentinel:     This game always was a tough one for me. I understood the rules, I knew how to play it, yet I never really got into it. So this will probably be my final serious attempt at this one.   It is a rather simple game. You're residing on an isometric 3D landscape and can absorb everything in there. "Everything" being a bit of an exageration here, because we're basically talk

Playing Starflight (Genesis)

Hi there!   As requested by Bob, I'm playing the Genesis version of Starflight:   So, is it an RPG? I'm not sure. That's what they considered it in my "Happy Computer" mags back in the day. I think it's something like "Pirates! in Space", spiced up with a scavenger hunt. Of course, when it came out in 1986, Pirates! didn't even exist   Lemon64 has it sorted into "Simulation, Space" - when it was my descission I'd have it put under "Adventure, Miscellaneous"   At first I was unsure wh

Playing Aliens (C64)

Hi there!   This is going to be the worst "Playing..." game by far:     This is such a badly designed game. I'm only forcing myself to try again, since I owned it as a kid. Of course I knew even then that it sucked, but maybe now I can at least find a trainer or cheat to finally see the end   It has a map with about 250 rooms. Your mission is to kill the Alien Queen in the last room at the very other end of your starting point. No matter what I ever try, about 15-20 rooms into the game

The Last Ninja 2 (+Remix)

Hi there!   So, just when you thought your job was done, System 3 delivered   The Last Ninja 2 (1988):     Programming: John Twiddy Graphics: Hugh Riley Musician: Matt Gray   Ratings: Zzap! Rating: 94% (Lemon is down at the time I'm typing this)   Overview: The Last Ninja 2 is one of those sequels that is mostly just "more" of the same. Hugh Rileys graphix for example are just as excellent as in the first game, just look at the "beautiful" drug laboratory pictured above. The m

Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep

Hi there!   Interplaying Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep (1994):     It sounds like a joke: Almost a full decade after Dungeon Master revolutionized computer RPGs forever, its developer "Faster Than Light" almost released its sequel. Well, they did release a couple of versions for obscure japanese computers, but it was Interplay who finally brought it to western PCs.   More than that actually, since Interplay also completely updated all graphics from 16 to 256 colors and add

Playing Teenage Queen (Amiga)

Hi there!   Ah, I'll never get tired of playing Strip Poker games:     Now this french production from Exxos is special in two ways. As you can see, instead of delivering yet another set of horribly digitized models, this one features handmade drawings, some of which could actually qualify as sexy   The other difference from standard Strip Poker games is that Teenage Queen is playing with a very tough AI. Even when manipulating luck some through savestates, it took over 3 hours to full

Playing Escape from Singe's Castle (C64)

Hi there!   Here comes an "impossible" conversion, Dragon's Lair - Escape from Singe's Castle on the C64:   Well, no need to panic. Albeit there's no way to really port a laserdisk game onto a single sided C64 disk, this version is widely known as the only playable game at all from the Dragon's Lair / Space Ace series of games   First thing you'll notice is the incredible music - another masterpiece from Rob Hubbard.   Now, how did they port this game to the C64? Well, they were slici

Playing Fist II (C64)

Hi there!   So, now that my wife and me have beaten Pokemon Snap on the VC, I can go on here...   As usual plans have changed, so instead of Paperboy, here comes Fist II:     Why no Paperboy? Well, I really tried getting into it, but no matter which version I tried (NES/SMS/GEN), I couldn't force myself into playing it, no matter how much I was trying. The best one seemed to be the Genesis one, but it still sucked.   Next in line was "Fist II - The Legend Continues", so the full titl

Playing Vermeer (C64)

Hi there!   A German game, through and through:     Vermeer is a trading simulation, a genre that's only popular here and presumably nowhere else in the world. I'd assume about 90% of these kind of games were written here and I'm not even sure if Vermeer was amongst the select few that ever got an english localization.   While most parts of these games actually look like Excel sheets, shown above is a screenshot of an art auction, which are a speciality of Vermeer. Besides the usual gam

Playing Wonder Boy (Sega Master System)

Hi there!   And yet another Sega Arcade is going to be played on the Master System!   And again I have it in my collection, so I have no screenshots straight away. Maybe later, in case I decide again to switch back to emulation in order to finish it   I've researched this game some and to my understanding, minor details aside, it should be the same game as "Adventure Island" for the NES. Later games in either series differ significantly though, they just originated from the same source.

Playing Nuclear War (Amiga)

Hi there!   Nuking it out once again with Ronnie Raygun and Gorbachef:     Now that was one game that I totally loved back in the day. I really can't think of many other games operating on such an insane level of black humor   In its core Nuclear War is a dead simple, board game like strategy game. You choose four computer opponents out of a selection of strangely familiar looking faces and then you fight against them to the death on a simple map that is divided into 5 continents, one

Playing Legacy of the Ancients (C64)

Hi there!   Yay, I'm playing another classic RPG!     What you see above is a picture of the brilliant looking dungeons. I was totally puzzled by these, because they are almost realtime. Well, almost - the game is turn based after all. Still, there's no random encounters a la Bard's Tale, the monsters are roaming the dungeons just like you do. Back in the day this must've been very impressive. (Still, only 5 months later came Dungeon Master on the ST, catapulting the whole genre 5 years i

Playing Uninvited (NES)

Hi there!   So, once again I started this adventure. I tried playing the game several times before, but I usually got stuck within an hour or two and gave up. Maybe this time I will do better   I chose playing the NES version. The C64 one has horrible GFX and the Amiga version with all it's windows looks more like 'work' than 'game'   The NES version also has NESy background muzak on every screen and instead of the free-arangement iconized inventory it has easier to handle lists.   My

Playing Labyrinth (C64)

Hi there!   TADA:   Yup, that's David Bowie himself on a C64 screen!   Oh how I loved the movie! Ok, I was 12 when I saw it in the cinema. It was definitely a lot better than "Howard the Duck" and "Big Trouble in Little China" which I also saw around that time. And I was sooo into Bowie at the time, I probably would've liked any movie with him. In fact   I've seen Labyrinth about 20 times since, I was playing the Underground 7" each morning before I left for school for a whole 2 ye

Playing Snoopy and Peanuts (Amiga)

Hi there!   Yet another license game, albeit with graphics amazingly close to the TV Show:     The graphics of this game were really quite good, even in motion. The whole rest of it... is another story though...   So what we got here is some kind of an adventure game. The story is pretty simple: Linus has lost his blanket and it is Snoopys mission to get it back to him.   In order to to so, he's moving back and forth through the 20 screens of this game. In the 5th or 6th room you can

Playing Samurai Warrior (C64)

Hi there!   A beat'em up-adventure game from the makers of the Exploding Fist series:     Well, if you're anything like me, you've probably also had this lifelong dream of playing a swordfighting ninja rabbit in a video game. Hehe   A handful of path choices aside, our rabbit ninja called "Usagi Yojimbo" is usually moving rightwards through the scenery. Normally he's pretty friendly and will greet and talk to other NPCs and even donate money to the poor. Once he's attacked or ambushed

Playing Hero's Quest (DOS)

Hi there!   And so Sierra decided it finally was time to cross adventure and RPG games:     Well, I've been ignoring most Sierra games so far, because they usually require struggling with a text parser. After playing Manhunter not too long ago, which was completely menu driven, Hero's Quest positively surprised me again. A few years after its original release, Sierra produced a VGA remake with a nice point & click icon system. That version I could not resist to try (Just for the rec

Star Trek 25th Anniversary

Hi there!   Interplaying Star Trek 25th Anniversary (1992):     While the first three entries in this series were all about Interplays great early RPGs, we see them utilizing their Star Trek license in totally different genres here. ST25A is actually a hybrid between a Space Combat Simulator and an Adventure game.   They were totally covering the look, feel and flow of the classic Star Trek series here, presenting 7 brandnew epsiodes with the original crew, which you can play through on

Playing Galivan (NES)

Hi there!   What an exciting surprise!     This is a game I played before on the C64. IIRC it came with some compilation I actually bought because it had Arkanoid on it. Total stinker, look it up in Lemon64: http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=1014   More or less accidently I decided to at least give the NES version a try, since I already knew how bad the C64 version was.   And now this version appears to be a brilliant game! Yay!   I only played the first "area" so far, bu

Tron Tank Maze Design

Hi there!   I find the design of the maze in the Tank level of the Tron Arcade very interesting:     Not only is it avoiding symmetry, there's also two spots (aside the middle section) where it "violates" the chosen raster.   Tron 2600 Test: Better Proportions: ebivison.zip 2nd Effect: 2600porn.zip Color Melt: Interleaved:   Greetings, Manuel

Playing Out Run (Genesis)

Hi there!   I'm rarely "Playing..." racing games, but I don't mind having a closer look every once in a while:     I remember playing a round or two every time I saw it somewhere in my youth, but never really cared about getting a home version. The C64 version was rated 20% in Happy Computer and later the Amiga had much better offerings like e.g. Test Drive 2 or Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge.   I thought the best version should be the Genesis one, after all coming from Sega themselves. S

Playing Probotector (NES)

Hi there!   So when Bob recently suggested Contra as a must 1988 title, I cannot help but agree, so I'm playing Probotector now:     I think this was the last title my brother and me bought back in the day for the NES, but AFAIK he was playing it a lot more than me. I never made it past the 2nd level back then in my handful of tries, so the screenshot above shows a premiere!   First impression is pretty good. Not sure wether it is an essential title yet, but I'm having fun so far. The

Neuromancer

Hi there!   Interplaying Neuromancer (1988):     I remember that back in the day Neuromancer was filed under RPG, but after just spending a first night playing it, I must say it felt much more like an adventure to me. There are a few role playing elements in it, like the upgradeable skill chips and softwarez, but other than that most parts are a lot closer to e.g. Space Quest than The Bard's Tale.   Based on the book from William Gibson, you're taking the role of a computer hacker in C

Shattered Steel

Hi there!   Interplaying Shattered Steel (1996):     When considering wether I should feature a game in "Interplaying", it is often enough for me to just read a review. This'll usually give me a very good idea what it's all about and if I might like it. For Shattered Steel reviews didn't help much though, since I've next to zero experience regarding mech games.   So just for the fun of it, I've been trying the original 5 mission demo that was used back in the day to promote the game. An
