Yama-Ha!

Hi there!   Normal service will soon resume here right after the World Cup is over, so in the meantime I have this German Wave 80's classic for you to enjoy   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQjBEbwAi1Q   Greetings, Manuel

The Damned & Billy Idol Live 16.06.2010

Hi there!   As you may know, earlier this week I went to a little Open Air in a castle near Nuremberg, where my beloved The Damned did a support show for another legendary 80's performer, Billy Idol. (BTW: I'm listening to the Devo Tracks Darrel just posted while typing this, thanks a lot! )   I took only a ~2 hour ride to get there, so we where there already before the doors opened:     While waiting outside, we suddenly heard The Damned playing History of the World, but thank heavens

Playing Hot Shot (C64)

Hi there!   The full German title of this was Pierre Littbarskis Hot Shot:     In England it was promoted with Gary Lineker. And I must say they both were deserving a much better game than this   Despite me hating sports games, I thought to make an exception for once during the World Cup   I actually own a few C64 soccer games still from back in the day, like Microprose Soccer (which I loved) and the first two Kick Offs (which I hated), but Hot Shots is one I never tried before.

Playing Hillsfar (NES)

Hi there!   Let's have a look at another AD&D title for the NES:     Somehow Hillsfar for the NES is probably one of the weirdest games in existance.   The original home computer version this is based on was kinda supposed to bridge the waiting time between the releases of Pool of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds. You could basically load single Pool of Radiance characters into Hillsfar and train them there. There's a series of quests to perform (3 for every class) and solving

Playing Ballistix (C64)

Hi there!   Finally I'm coming to another 16>8-Bit conversion of a Psygnosis game:     After writing about Barbarian and Menace in previous entries, I skipped some others, like Terrorpods or Baal, but this one looked playable again   Hm... how to explain the game, as it has two completely different faces, depending on wether you're playing alone or with a friend...   Let's start thinking of Air Hockey. That's it basically for two players. Both then control small arrows shooting li

Playing Dark Fusion (C64)

Hi there!   Yup, it's that time again! Horizontal shmupping!     Dark Fusion is one of the rare shoot'em ups from Gremlin, who were mostly focused on Jump'n Runs on the 8-Bitters.   Nevertheless it is a pretty solid effort.   The player starts out on foot in a hub level. It's pretty dangerous there already, but here he can power up his weapons and enter the space levels through portals.   He has to run'n gun to three portals in each level. The first two will open up impressive boss

Mii and the Wii - 3 / 2010

Hi there!   Like the Wii is currently slowing down on game releases that catch my interest, my playtime is slowing down as well. Still had a few titles spinning though   The list of games I'm done with: Zelda TP, Excite Truck, Metal Slug Anthology, Geometry Wars, Bully , Zack & Wiki , SMG, Disaster , MP 3 , Fire Emblem , de Blob, Lego Indiana Jones, No More Heros , MadWorld, Wario Land, RE4, RE:UC, Another Code , Cursed Mountain , MP Trilogy, RE: DC, Firefighter, Dead Space , Muramasa,

The Damned German Date!

Hi there!   Wild times ahead once again! Today finally a german "The Damned" date has been announced!   On 16th June they'll play an Open Air Show on Castle Abenberg (near Nuremberg), together with Billy Idol!   http://www.feuertanz-festival.de/abenberg2010/   The ticket price is an insane 53 Euro and it's a 3 hour ride, but since it's the only German show announced so far, I'll definitely be there   I've never seen Billy Idol before, but I hear he's still got it, no?   Greetings,

Blood & Magic

Hi there!   Interplaying Blood & Magic (1996):     Judging by the sound of most reviews I read regarding Blood & Magic, it is supposed to be an average game at best. Just as with Shattered Steel though, I simply tried the original demo that was released 15 years ago in order to promote the game. Once again I had a fun time doing that, so I bought me a copy of the game!   Of course, being an official AD&D Forgotten Realms game also helped the descission, since I'm a big fan o

Playing Human Killing Machine (C64)

Hi there!   Well, well... sometimes I play games because they're supposed to be good and sometimes...     ...sometimes I just like watching a trainwreck   Now, what do we have here actually?   Imagine one of the worst developers on the planet, Tiertex, just delivered totally horrible home computer conversions of Capcoms Street Fighter. - The C64 version e.g. has a Lemon64 rating of 2.5!   With such a brilliant "game engine" already in hands, they had the fabulous idea of using it

Playing Beam (C64)

Hi there!   Enough with the clones! Today I tried a pretty original action puzzler:     Normally I'm shying away from these, since they usually have 200 and more levels, but this one was advertized to have 27 only, so I gave it a try   This is one of the rare playable games from German developer Magic Bytes. They usually did games with good graphics and music (Beam qualifies here as well!), but most of them where total disasters, often scoring less than 20% in magazines   Well, this

Playing Galaxy '89 (Amiga)

Hi there!   Oh those wild early Amiga days, where one could just clone everything and get away with it     Yup, just like Dig Dug, I can't resist a Galaga clone either   This game is slightly better than Dugger, albeit only if you accept that it's just a Galaga clone - not Galaga '88 as the name would suggest   Well, all Galaga features are there. The only enhancement over regular Galaga is the ability to shoot diagonally at two fixed angles. As shown in the screenshot above, the g

Playing Dugger (Amiga)

Hi there!   I bet you can guess from the screenshot what attracted my attention here:     Yup, when reading about Dugger, I was expecting no less than Dig Dug on steroids   How wrong I was...   This rare swiss game production from Linel starts with a very cool intro sequence showcasing excellent Amiga graphics and music. While the music can hold this quality level during the actual game, the graphics are a first downer.   Content wise it's the most blatant Dig Dug ripoff you can i

Playing Battletech (C64)

Hi there!   Kinda fitting follow-up to Shattered Steel, here's the original mech game:     When Activision managed to aquire the license, they asked Infocom to develop the first Battletech game. Considering that Infocom did nothing but plain text-adventures before that, this actually seemed like a pretty odd choice, even when Infocom passed on the actual execution to none other than Westwood.   Making it an RPG might also look like a questionable choice from todays point of view, but we

Shattered Steel

Hi there!   Interplaying Shattered Steel (1996):     When considering wether I should feature a game in "Interplaying", it is often enough for me to just read a review. This'll usually give me a very good idea what it's all about and if I might like it. For Shattered Steel reviews didn't help much though, since I've next to zero experience regarding mech games.   So just for the fun of it, I've been trying the original 5 mission demo that was used back in the day to promote the game. An

Playing The Deep (C64)

Hi there!   Let's have a look at another C64 conversion of an obscure arcade one hit wonder:     Did you ever hear of an Arcade games maker called "Cream"? Me neither. According to the KLOV, The Deep was the only game they ever made. Well, while it apparently wasn't good enough to keep the company going, it was at least considered good enough by U.S. Gold to aquire the license for homecomputer conversions.   The C64 version at hands didn't impress me much. The graphics are functional at

Playing Phantom Fighter (Amiga)

Hi there!   Ah, finally another Amiga shoot'em up!     This one's from Martech, the makers of one of my favorite C64 games of all time: Mega Apocalypse. They never really managed to deliver yet another game as good as that though, so they slowly went out of business. I think Phantom Fighter was one of their last games.   It is a mixed emotions experience. As you can see, the (animated!) background graphics are gorgeous for such an early Amiga game. The guy responsible for these superio

Playing Sword of Sodan (Amiga)

Hi there!   Look at the size of those sprites!     There you go, that was the main sales argument of the game when it came out   Well, this was early in 1989, when slowly more and more original Amiga software was created. Sword of Sodan was part of that first wave, just like e.g. F/A 18 Interceptor or Populous.   While the graphics were impressive and the audio respectable, the gameplay didn't follow suit. Clearly inspired by Arcade games like Ghosts'n'Goblins (it even has a level wi

Playing Teenage Queen (Amiga)

Hi there!   Ah, I'll never get tired of playing Strip Poker games:     Now this french production from Exxos is special in two ways. As you can see, instead of delivering yet another set of horribly digitized models, this one features handmade drawings, some of which could actually qualify as sexy   The other difference from standard Strip Poker games is that Teenage Queen is playing with a very tough AI. Even when manipulating luck some through savestates, it took over 3 hours to full

The Last Airbender

Whoa!   I was only browsing for upcoming Wii games, when I saw a title "The Last Airbender" listed on play.com. Could this really mean...?!?   Some quick check vs. YouTube revealed the absolute sensation:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W1dhqc-JBs   I'm hyped as hell now. Is it the beginning of a trilogy? Who'll play Toph?   They better not make her any less awesome than this:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm4vHqK3N-Y   Greetings, Manuel

Mii and the Wii - 2 / 2010

Hi there!   Since the last report I saw quite a few high profile games, so let's jump into the action quickly!   The list of games I'm done with: Zelda TP, Excite Truck, Metal Slug Anthology, Geometry Wars, Bully , Zack & Wiki , SMG, Disaster , MP 3 , Fire Emblem , de Blob, Lego Indiana Jones, No More Heros , MadWorld, Wario Land, RE4, RE:UC, Another Code , Cursed Mountain , MP Trilogy, RE: DC, Firefighter, Dead Space , Muramasa, TvsC   New entries in my Wii collection:   Silent Hil

Playing Might & Magic 2 (SNES)

Hi there!   Ah, this sure looks miles better than the first Might & Magic:     Good to see that New World computing did their homeworks in the art department. There's only one year between the first two games of the series, but the difference is amazing.   This entry in the "Playing..." series nails another two firsts: This is not only the first time ever I'm playing a real sequel to a game featured previously, but it's also the first Super Nintendo game.   I've been jumping a bit

Spherical

Hi there!   Move over Solomon's Key, here comes:   Spherical (1989):     Program: Jörn Galka Graphics: Bernd Buddrus, Andreas Escher Musician: Ramiro Vaca, Chris Hülsbeck   Ratings: Zzap! Rating: N/A Lemon64 Rating: 8.2   Still backtracking here, but Turrican 2 will definitely come one day. This one came out on the 16-Bit machines first, but as you can see from the credits, it was ported by Rainbow Arts main staff, securing the highest possible quality on the C64 as well.   Wh

Playing Bad Dudes (NES)

Hi there!   Another Data East game from the "So bad it's good" category:     If there ever was something like a B-Game, than this is as close as it gets. Starting from the cheesy "Are you a bad enough Dude to Rescue the President" intro to the very end, this is one totally over the top trash-experience.   The gameplay isn't too different from the recently featured Robocop, which was made by the same team I think. It's another 7 sidescrolling levels, gone are the guns, but the jumping th
