Again with the neighbors....

Crazy Climber

blog-0159698001410467166.jpgSo again with complaining neighbors, one of them was going on about my garbage getting on peoples lawns. I agree, thats a valid complaint but I put my garbage in the CAN so sorry buddy, bark up another tree. I ignored him until I noticed he was right, squirrels had chewed a hole through my garbage can and were littering garbage about the neighborhood. I had the city bring a replacement lid, twice and within a week they had chewed through again and my garbage had become everyone's business. The third call for a new lid was ignored and the squirrels lived in a garbage paradise as they mocked me while I walked to my car in the mornings.

My neighbor across the alley (one of the good ones) politely suggested I put my trash can in the garage until trash day. Although I respect his opinion, uhhhh....NO!

Not only will my absent mind forget trash day I do a lot of projects in there and the last thing I want is the stench of baby diapers and rotted pizza while I'm trying to build something...like a high powered sling shot to murder squirrels with for instance!

The solution seemed simple enough, design a bunch of cruel jagged metal traps that would kill all of them and thus rid me of my problem. My wife informed me this is not cool, and may even cause an untimely divorce so on to plan B...THE SQUIRREL BUSTER! Not mearly as fun but seemed to do the trick.

Basically just a 1/4 inch thick chunk of aluminum cnc cut, welded and attached to the top of my garbage can lid with 3 times the amount of bolts it would ever need so no amount of squirrel power will penetrate my precious garbage :) Take that vermin...MY GARBAGE!!! MINE!!!

They were chewing a hole big enough to drag garbage through?

Instead of keeping the vermin from chewing their way in, you might consider a version with a "one way" device that lets them in to the can readily, but keeps them from chewing their way out...

Yeah, my Uncle down the street does that and hes always bringing squirrels to work/etc to get rid of them. Sounds like a lot of effort. I would just shoot them but I guess thats no bueno these days, lol. The only problem I see with that is then they are in my can, prior to my squirrel buster I opened my can and two squirrels leaped at me like little garbage covered hell rats. They seem to fear nothing in my area. One time (After I installed my Squirrel buster) I was returning from work one evening and a squirrel was on my stucco right above my door, when I walked closer he would chatter and squeal...I swear he was trying to prevent me from entering my house! I threw my shoe at him and he dodged it and chattered at me. I ran to the garage to get a pole saw to knock him on his ass and the little bastard jumped on my roof and started following me. Since they can't get in my can any longer they seem to have moved on though...

Never heard of a squirrel going after garbage. Mice maybe - they love to chew through cardboard and plastic bags to get to food. Raccoons, on the other hand . . .
