BATTER UP!

blog-0067354001411841505.jpgI got another odd request (YES!!) It's always fun when someone comes up with an idea to make something that you didn't think of, but seems like a great idea. This was a request for the batter from the game HOMERUN for the Atari 2600. At first I thought this would be a piece of cake, all that was requested was a stand alone cut out (like my Giant Adventure Dragon) of the Batter from homerun, in the same Orange color as the Dragons.

Hmmmm...this one really made me realize how much a lot of these early games rely on the background graphics to look right. I did an exact cut out of the Batter drafted in Cad and well, it looked bad. The dimensions just didn't look right, I checked cut again, changed them to what I thought might look better and cut again, no no no NO!!!!! It's not correct, it looks drab and boring, who wants to put that on their wall? Ugh...back to square one, lol

I decided to go a little different and make it like a logo style sign. I made a cut out of the batter (much smaller this time) and added a nice white background, I then used the same color as the batter to give it some color contrast...yes yes yes YES!!!

I used a very special orange color for this one. Many years ago we made the building parts for a Dairy Queen and the very peak of the building had a completely unique color called "Sunburst Orange" It is a deep metallic custom orange that actually CHANGES COLOR to a nice Light sunrise Bronze when it is in direct sunlight. I had a very small 15" piece of it I had been hanging on to for years. I knew I would never get this color again so I wanted to make something special with it....

I kept having flashes of my childhood when looking at this material and thinking about this Homerun project. I would see the sunrise orange, then look at the batter, and have brief flashes, yet incredibly vivid memories of walking to the park early mornings to play baseball with my friends. It's almost like I could hear the converstations we were having if not just for a second. I could feel the sun starting to peak over the trees in the little secluded run down park that we just loved to play baseball in on a nice summer morning....just felt right...man I had a great childhood...I love doing projects like this :)
