Ideas for my future

So many ideas for my future I've never really bothered to think about what I want to do with my life.

I major in Web Design at CCV but lately, I've become complacent. I don't have the desire to do the homework anymore. It's nothing more than a series of dealing with boring coding exercises and crap like that. I don't want to spend my life doing that.

Doing some thinking, I came up with a few ideas of things I'd like to do before 40:

- Fall in love, get married and have kids. Get a house or nicer apt

- Be in a band

- Make beer and/or start up a bar or business

- Get involved in wrestling, preferably as a manager or promoter

- Buy and restore an old Volkswagen, preferably a bug or bus

- Travel the world at least once (maybe to Amsterdam, Jamaica and the UK)

All of these things are probably things I am hoping to achieve before I'm an old fart. As for my career path, I really have no idea what to do about my major. I'm working towards a supervisor position at work (if my boss gets promoted to manager) so I'm hopefully going places.

I've created a poll for those who like polls. What do you think, out of all the things I listed, would be easier to accomplish? I doubt that any of those goals are achievable in 15 years, but I'll give it a shot.

You may not like boring coding exercises, but having credentials may make it easier for you to get your foot in the door someplace. And since you've already paid the money for the course, you should try to complete it satisfactorily. Among other things, the ability to slog through boring jobs that are not fun is a useful skill in and of itself, and one that prospective employers will be interested in.

Of your choices:

- Fall in love, get married and have kids. Get a house or nicer apt

I fell in love, got married, and got a nicer apartment. Unfortunately, I got widowed soon thereafter.

- Be in a band

If your goal is to do it as a hobby on nights and weekends, you might be able to earn more than you spend on equipment, travel, etc. but relatively few people can make a full-time living by performing.

- Make beer and/or start up a bar or business

Making beer as a hobby can be fun, and being a bar owner can be lucrative. Selling liquor, however, entails all sorts of paperwork and--in many cases--political considerations.

- Get involved in wrestling, preferably as a manager or promoter

Don't know much about that, but it doesn't seem practical to me.

- Buy and restore an old Volkswagen, preferably a bug or bus

Might be fun as a hobby project, but won't pay the rent.

- Travel the world at least once (maybe to Amsterdam, Jamaica and the UK)

Might be fun, and can probably be done not too expensively, except you're unlikely to earn any money while doing it.

First of all, I'm not looking to make a full time job out of the following:

-Being in a band

-Making beer

-Restoring a car

That's not why I listed those things. Those have to do with hobbies. I may never sell beer but I want to make it at least. You never know if you're good at anything unless you try.

I didn't expect you to understand the wrestling thing. Most people are usually ignorant of wrestling as a whole regardless.

I appreciate the comment but it's not quite what I was looking for in terms of advice.

My thoughts for you:

- Fall in love, get married and have kids. Get a house or nicer apt

Great idea - Im in the above situation however realize that wife and kids cost $$$ - saving for college and everything else requires a great deal of cash - Buying a house depending are where you are living is also a major expense.

Ill ignore the rest since they are hobbies as listed.

As for your major and not liking 'coding' I would ahve you think about this:

Its a big change to find out that something you love or have an interest in (web page design) turns out to suck when applied to a job. I loved to program games on my ATari 800 - I was set for a career in Comp Sci (wasnt good enough for games) - When I graduated and starting looking for a job it was an eye opener that 'cool' jobs werent out there for what I was qualified for. However, work is what you to do have fun. There are very few opportunities where you can walk out of college into a cool/fun/well paying job right off the bat. Usually you need to work you way through the corporate ladder to get exposure to different types of jobs/such.

I went from coder to consultant to sales. I dont code much at all anymore (miss it) - but I put my foundation in place piece by piece. Short cuts are far and few inbetween. Id finish out school since a degree is worth its weight in gold - once out then decide how you choose to move forward.

Just my $0.02

Great points. I might still stick to my major.

I'm more focused on seeing how far I can move up the ladder at work. I don't like maintenance or managing custodians but it's a start.
