Star Castle RC1

Star Castle is basically feature complete now, so here is the first release candidate for testing.

Please note that you must upgrade to the latest Stella 3.6.1

The main changes this time are:

  • New sound effects by LS_Dracon
  • Title screen music by Kulor
  • High score table (will only work on Harmony cart)
  • Improved collision detection
  • Different ring colours on each wave

During the game, the following can be changed:

  • Pressing SELECT will skip to the next wave (this is for testing and will be removed in the final version).
  • Setting the LEFT DIFFICULTY to A will cause the ring segments to be destroyed with 1 hit (instead of 2).
  • Setting the RIGHT DIFFICULTY to A will cause the ship to be destroyed by the rings (instead of bouncing off).

I'm still trying to figure out the Harmony CU bankswitching format - I'll post up a Harmony version once this is done.

Please let me know if anything is broken, buggy, or just plain annoying!

Thanks,

Chris

EDIT: Harmony version now available. Make sure that you have BIOS 1.05 on your Harmony cart, then unzip and drop the starRC1.cu file onto your SD card. Note that the high score table is not stored to flash in this version, so it will be deleted when you switch off your Atari.

EDIT2: Alternative ring colours version: star_altcols.zip

I really like the game Chris but could you do something about the frequency of the blinking rings? It's really is giving me a headache to watch. It's actually making me ill.

You should enable the phosphor effect in Stella (Alt + P on PC, Cmd + P on Mac).

Ok. That's better. Will that happen on the real hardware?

The flicker is not very noticeable on a real TV. The phosphor mode in Stella approximately simulates a TV screen. A better simulation is coming soon with the implementation of Blargg filters.

Hey Chris,

Still playing the latest BIN and having a blast - thanks! :)

One quick suggestion...

In between levels you show the status screen that dislays the score/wave and then after a few seconds the score/lives. If you press the button during any of this time it jumps to the game (good!); unfortunately I'm too impatient to have it display the score/lives so I find myself guessing how many lives I have left. Any chance you could change it so the button press while it's displaying the score/wave will jump to the score/lives display? Pressing the button during the score/lives display would jump to the game play as it does now. Basically, after a level it would be nice to be able to press the button twice to quickly see score/wave, score/lives and jump to the gameplay.

Hope that makes sense!

Thanks,

John
