  2. IntelliMission don't worry, This is NOT Atari, this is not Nolan Bushnell or Wozniak in a garage making pong boards, This is just some Fiend who got his grubby hands on the Atari name and is milking it for whatever cache the name has in mainstream markets. You are better of getting legit hardware, or even better, some of the old flashbacks have all you need to make a fully functioning Atari!, the cool people who designed them included solder points on the "motherboard" so that anyone willing to solder can add a cartridge connector.

  6. When it fails (I'm not convinced that there is another option; 10,000 users do not a viable platform make when you're talking cloud-connected console hardware), the failure and bankruptcy of Atari SA will be absolutely deserved. They are no more than an IP holding and licensing company, with no relation to the Atari that kickstarted pretty much the entire industry, and are perfectly happy to whore the name out on any tat that they think they can squeeze a few shekels out of. It might be more accurate to say that it's a shame that the current holders of the Atari name are lying, disingenuous turds with no appreciation for what they have and a cynical arrogance towards anyone for whom the name may have importance. Granted, there's a lot that led up to this point that predated them, but the people currently at the helm are the absolute nadir of bottom-of-the-barrel management to pass through the company in its entire history - and they're the ones who are responsible for the joke that it's become today. Atari, from a positive point of view: everything before 1996 (more so if you go in reverse chronological order).

  8. Just finish reading an old magazine from Feb 1981 called Electronic Technician/Dealer. Its audience was for electronic repair ships from back-in-the-day (ex: when your TV or fridge broke, you got it repaired, not replaced). Anyways, a portion of the article talks about the Intellivision in a semi-technical manner that I thought I'd share here.

  9. For the next trick, try naming your top ten Atari published games from the past six years. Can you even get to three without including re-releases? We're somehow expected to believe that this thing is going to have exclusive games. On that track record, it ain't going to happen.

  21. Other than the ATARI name, this group has NOTHING. They haven't developed a hit game, either as an arcade title or for an existing system. Their game developer pricing structure means that IF you develop a game for the Atari, you better not put much time into it, because you will NEVER make back your investment otherwise. There is NO life expectancy for this system beyond 6 months, because it will be out-of-date in that amount of time. Other than the Atari name, there is NOTHING to justify the price of the console. The people who bought the Atari name conned the public into thinking they would be able to play an almost limitless supply of classic arcade games with internet-based features for a multi-media and potential multiplayer experience. In the end, if this is actually released, you will get existing technology for 3x the cost of what you could purchase otherwise, with a nifty retro joystick as a bonus... but you have to be ready to pay more just to play anything on it because whatever comes on this system appears to be limited or non-existent.

Fixed save state issue with certain memory patterns (not Windows 10 related). Regarding the Swedish keyboard issue, it looks like there are a couple of bugs: cooked (character) mappings aren't working for extended characters, and changes to the custom keymap don't take effect immediately. Until those are fixed, bind Shift+4 as a virtual key and then toggle the current keymap to natural/direct and then back to custom to make it work.

  24. Have a working prototype with basic gameplay. 2 player but both players controlled by P0 Joystick ( so you can play against yourself) . to shoot is similar to Pro Golf and Pro Bowling but a little different : 1. start shot by pushing up. 2. push down when strengthmeter is at desired level. The inside red slot is the strength level for bottom row and the outside slot is for top row . 3. Press button when meter is back to zero. Early or late will cause shot to be wide right ( early ) or wide left ( late) . If a player's cup is hit then the player must press the button to drink the beverage before their next turn . First player to lose all 5 cups loses. Still to come : sounds title screen progressively more difficult to aim as number of cups decreases . Play Responsibly !!!!!

  25. I disagree with the second sentence, as Sega is still doing quite well as a 3rd party despite their having no idea what to do with Sonic until recently, but that's a point people need to realize: there's a reason these companies become third-parties. Hardware R&D, support, advertising, licensing deals and maintainence is A LOT of money in hopes of becoming a financial success. We're talking eight digits minimum of spending before making a profit. Consoles almost always start as a loss for a company, even if they don't end up as such by the end of said console's lifetime, relying on software sales for making money. Atari, Inc was forced out of this back in early nineties because of similar bad management and financial decisions to what current Atari is performing now. They literally couldn't afford to keep up with Nintendo, Sony or even Sega (which was in deep with the Saturn). The OUYA started with a far larger install-base out of the crowdfunding gate than the VCS, and it lost all steam within months. Atari wants to get back into modern consoles but can't compete in numbers with the poster child of failed Kickstarter successes. If the OUYA lost nearly all relevance before year one of release, what chance does Atari SA have? And this is all assuming that the hardware even makes it to backers, nevermind retail availability.

A few more tissues were used than normal. Always answer your doorbell. Talk again of goal posts moving around of their own free will. @Flojomojo still hard at his taco reporting. Pigeons discussing whether they like matte or gloss. If you beat a dead horse, it won't feel it. Feargal's name was brought up after a lengthy hiatus. Us Aussie's flippantly throw around the 'C' word too much. I learnt how to hold a soldering iron properly. @Lodmot is confusing. Mr Harris is sniffing the missing 92 VCS shells and still typing wacky IGG comments. @MrBeefy likes very f#cking hot Chilli Sauce. @Nathan Strum made a clever Freddy anagram. @toiletunes is OCD about joystick placement. More Amico banter. ... and STILL no video of a working Ashoebox. And those clowns say this thread is just about Atacobox thrashing. How wrong they are! ?

  28. Funny you should mention that; I started up my 7800 tonight for the first time in about 15 years. It brought up a homebrew cartridge (Baby Pac-Man) with no issue while tuned to channel 3 on a modern display. Granted, that was hardware designed by GCC - but it's still more an Atari machine than the Ataribollocks.

  29. Hi All, @playermissilewas creating an excellent tutorials on enhanced DLI techniques. job well done. I would like to introduce (not that it is new), an other DLI advanced technique which I believe can solve the constantly asked question "can this game be ported?" or "can these graphics be doable on A8". Char mode (Antic mode 4) is a very powerfull mode. and it is commonly used to develop some nice A8 games. What can you do with only 127 chars that the A8 brings as default? (Well, plus maybe another 127 inverted) - still , very limited, not much. What about creating a screen like this (look at the level screen and ignore wonderboy and snail): most of you will say, who are you kidding? this screen is hi-res , too colourfull and if this is charmode it can never fit under a 127 character set. what if I told you this is doable with a caveat of A8 limitations, wouldn't you be interested to first see then learn how to do it? Here is how this screen could look on A8: Ignore the top menu bar for a second and focus on the 24 char mode lines in this screen. looks colorfull enough, looks with nice res considering A8, but how is that possible with only 127 character set? The answer relies on the power of DLI. You can "attach" to each charmode of the screen a character set. if you have 24 charmode lines you can have up to 24 charsets each charset is 127 chars that gives you a high number of characters that you can use: 24*127 = 3048 chars. Bear in mind if you use all the 24 charsets then you will need 24K of memory as each charset is 1K. that is too much for the A8. you need to find a balance between charsets and the number of chars you need on screen. For example, in the screen above (which is part of the wonderboy port i am working on) the screen uses 4 charsets. when setting the DLI for this screen I use the following table (C Code): unsigned char charset_table[] = { CHARSET_0 >> 8,CHARSET_1 >> 8,CHARSET_2 >> 8,CHARSET_3 >> 8, CHARSET_0 >> 8,CHARSET_1 >> 8,CHARSET_2 >> 8,CHARSET_3 >> 8, CHARSET_0 >> 8,CHARSET_1 >> 8,CHARSET_2 >> 8,CHARSET_3 >> 8, CHARSET_0 >> 8,CHARSET_1 >> 8,CHARSET_2 >> 8,CHARSET_3 >> 8, CHARSET_0 >> 8,CHARSET_1 >> 8,CHARSET_2 >> 8,CHARSET_3 >> 8, CHARSET_0 >> 8,CHARSET_1 >> 8,CHARSET_2 >> 8,CHARSET_3 >> 8 }; The way it is built is that there are 4 interleave character sets that creates the screen above. the 4 character sets repeat themselves 6 times on the 24 charmode lines. So the DLI attaching the charset set to each charmode line is looking something like this: 0 1 2 3 0 1 2 3 0 1 2 3 0 1 2 3 0 1 2 3 0 1 2 3 How do I know how many character sets I need, or even worst, how do I know how to draw a screen like this with these character sets. Well, this was acomplished by the great help of my good friend and A8 guru @popmilo and with the great graphics work of the great A8 artist @José Pereira Jose drew this screen in G2F making sure it follows A8 standards the result was a image (png). That image was processed by a python tool written by Vlad. you can configure the amount of charsets and the result of the tool processing was: - A charset file (either bin or header file) - this was to attach into the DLI charmodes in the technique explained above. - A tilemap file (either bin or header file) - this was used to draw the chars on screen that will produce this level. Here is an example of one of the levels (full level) scrolling from start to end, the level we will use in the game will look a lot better , this is just to show how the interleaved character sets work: level.xex Where do we go form here? If porting wonderboy is doable, I believe many other ports can be accomplished I call out to all A8 developers and programmers out there to take the challange and try to port good graphics games that were doable on C64 and sure are doable on A8. Hope this was helpful. any comments/questions are most welcome. Cheers, Yaron

  30. I thought I would start this thread to see who else has a story to tell on how owning/using their Atari's changed their live's (for better or worse). I started this here as the 800 was the starter for me (might be ST's for others). For me it started with a 2600 that I bought for my "kids" ?, then about a year later I wanted a Computer and the most appealing in spite of the price was the Atari 800 with 48K and a Cassette. I started like most learning Basic, but wanted to know and use the power of this little beast, so an Assembler Editor Cart came next. I learnt 6502 and am still quite proficient at it. Work wise I was an Electronics Engineer in the RAF and was posted to a facility that was staring to use In-Circuit testing which required our team writing programs, I found the transition quite easy as I was already using BASIC and Assembly Language and ended up having to teach the other staff. I later progressed to an ST where I self taught 'C' and obviously 68000 machine code. I moved to a new station that built Automated Test Systems, again lots of programming. I even managed to get my bosses to buy some ST's to do the CAD drawing for our project ST->rs232->IEE488 Interface->>10 pen Plotter. On leaving the RAF I got a job working for a Major Bank as an Analyst Programmer as they developed all their software in 'C' and I was quite profficient in the language by then. That kept me employed for about 17 years, then I moved on to become a Test Analyst for Cable and Wireless WorldWide, this still used my programming skills and again kept me gainfull employed until I retired. I don't think my career would have gone the way it did if I hadn't got that first Atari, I probably would have stayed as an Aircraft Engineer !!!

  36. It could if there were a good amount of excess voltage, but the voltage doubler's inefficiencies probably limit it's output to around 9 VDC. I think it takes at least 8 VDC to have the color pot circuit work reasonably well. If you could find a precision temperature independent zener rated for 8 V it could likely work. However I don't think you'll find a zener diode rated for that voltage, or if you do, I doubt that it has temperature compensation like the 10 V one I used in the 1088XLD. Edit: Although this has possibilities LM341 Adjustable Precision Shunt Regulator.

  37. After seeing all the nonsense for months, I'm convinced the so-called ribbed design was simply a set of stacked plates cut on a CNC router that they were able to make in the shop easily. They never even tried to put anything inside that other than an led nightlight. Eventually someone smarter informed them they couldn't mass produce that way, and it went out the window.

  38. It won't be. It's not even a console. It's a glorified mini PC. I recommend you go buy a 2600 or a Flashback (Flashback 9 lets you use SD cards to load more games onto it) or even a Retron 77. Play some real Atari games, see what it's actually about, and ignore this nonsensical nonsense. The correct answer for top ten Atari games is: Adventure Adventure Adventure Adventure Adventure Adventure Adventure Adventure Adventure Adventure Now, will someone please make a mod of Adventure with tacos?

  39. I have been "exposed" to 8-bit Atari since I was five. I went through gaming-only period (5-10) and (Turbo) BASIC programming period (11-13). From the later period, I remember one moment of absolute clarity when the dots connected themselves and I suddenly knew how DL, PMG, and custom character set work. I wish that would have happened later in all my math classes/courses later ? Then, relatively late (1997), I switched to PC compatibles and skipped the 16/32-bit Atari machines completely. Having no internet access until 2001, I didn't know about emulators, unless I stumbled over the SCORE magazine, issue 63, where they happened to include an emulator. I think it was Atari800Win at the time. It allowed me to play some games here and there. I used to download mostly from Atariland at the time. But I was not back to programming for 8-bit Atari until 2007. Out of despair, before the toughest exam of my master studies, I put together a simple game in CC65. And then I scraped through. So what were the consequences of being "exposed" to the stone gray box with keyboard? They were severe and mostly good. 1. Early exposure to and interest in learning English (parents realized that and sent me to courses when I was 9). 2. General interest in programming and computers (parents realized that too and sent me to afternoon computer school when I was 11. There I have learned how to use PC and how to program it in Turbo Pascal). 3. Considerable gaming time during early secondary education. The worst offenders were Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, and Age of Empires. One time, my grades declined horribly. Parents blamed the computer and it was boxed temporarily after a great deal of yelling. Boxing didn't help and couldn't have helped, however. The gaming was involved for sure, yet the true root cause was completely different as I just needed to adjust to higher demands of my grammar school. After a rough period of struggle and mistrust, grades improved, I eventually learned Java and C. The leaving exam was flawless. That was my redemption. 4. The next step was crystal clear, of course: 10 OPEN #1,COMPUTER_SCIENCE,0,"CZECH TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY" 20 FOR YEAR=1 TO 5: GOSUB STUDY: GOSUB PASS_EXAMS:NEXT YEAR 30 GET #1, MASTER_DEGREE: CLOSE #1 5. Career in IT. I do not complain.

  40. And so we reach Superman, which is really such a sea change in sophistication for game design, graphics, and storytelling for anything less than an expensive computer that it's hard to overstate its influence at the time. It tends to go overlooked these days (probably because, as a licensed game, it doesn't get rereleased), but it's *the* standout game for both 1979 and the first few years of the 2600's life. And hey - if nothing else, we literally would never have gotten Adventure if not for Superman.

  43. What do they want us to say? That it'll be a year late? That it'll be missing features like voice control, an SD card and that uber ribbed-design? That the hardware itself may be buggy because it's new? And even upgraded, it's still mediocre tech for which there are better options? Or that we still haven't seen it working? Or do they want us to remind them the first crowdfunding was canceled because they just needed "on key element", which turned out to be everything? Or that in 2017 they said it was "very real", but wasn't? Or the videos heavily implying or outright stating a functional Ataribox/VCS was being used weeks before retroactively adding "For illustration purposes only"? How'd that Tempest 4000 thing work out when the devs saw the video? Should we point them to the excellent The Register articles exposing Michael Artz for being a naked emperor? Or how Rob Wyatt was the Hero of the Realm until he left the kingdom and became shunned by all? Or maybe they're secretly envious of our phat memeing skills? Or subconsciously know @x=usr(1536) was right that tacos were a better use of money than this? How's that stock doing? Or maybe they just need acknowledgment, some tacos, and a big hug?
