  1. Of course I do, if only for my own sanity I need to get this done ? The last thing I want in the next build is dual PMG color, and it's already working for the player but it's pretty easy as it's only used for skin+blood: So it's only the enemy colors that require fixing because right now he's not wearing his pants!

  3. I looked around and didn't see this available online, so I went ahead and captured the audio (FLAC) of all five tapes and scanned the two books for An Invitation to Programming parts 1 through 3. If these do exist somewhere, then there are now two copies! I didn't try to convert the tapes into a binary format. Making them useful by keeping the data and audio tracks in sync is an exercise for the reader... (As far as I know, no one has come up with a mechanism for this in emulation, yet.) All 2GB-worth has been uploaded to Archive.org, but here are a few teasers: https://archive.org/details/aninvitationtoprogramming

  6. With a December 1 arrival date, which is almost certainly a placeholder. Gamestop changed their date to TBD, and is no longer taking pre-orders. It just says "NOT AVAILABLE." https://www.gamestop.com/video-games/arcade/products/atari-vcs-800-onyx-all-in-system-bundle/11094776.htm The market was tough before. Now that stores are closed and people are losing income, it seems like a worse idea than ever. Or as Atari's copy writer would say, "like never before." It's sad to live in a world where we can't mix with our friends and the only progress pictures of "Atari vcs" are factory mistakes.

  7. Those example pictures showing errors, defects, scratches, etc. are typically how it's done for things that are subjective. You don't want every Operator in a QC role making their own judgment, so you give them something as an example to gauge against. These can be go/no-go photos, or a grading scale ("Allowed are 1 scratch of A severity, or 2 scratches of B severity with a minimum spacing of Xmm, or 3 or more scratches of C severity with minimum spacing of Ymm"), that kind of thing. It's such a given thing that I can't believe they thought it was worthy of even mentioning. Where they are stating an actual dimension (like the spacing around the USB connector and the housing), they'll likely give some sort of simple gauge on either the high side or both sides of the tolerance (if this fits it's OK, as long as that doesn't fit). All in all, those kind of issues where the Ethernet port doesn't fit shouldn't be happening, not on any kind of 6 sigma design anyway. It looks to me that they didn't even do an RSS tolerance analysis to make sure all of the mechanical tolerances on the individual parts don't add up to something that you can't assemble. This thing is a dumpster fire on every level, including Design For Manufacturability. I've set up a factory in China, and was impressed by how diligent the workers are. They want to do inspections, and they want to find defects. The issue is giving them a gauge so that their work can be done within takt time and be as deterministic as possible. If you tell them their job is "look for defects", they will spend all day doing it. In my experience, they took instructions quite literally, so there was more work than expected on our side to make sure that all of our process and quality documentation would be properly interpreted. P.S. I really don't know how a thin glued-down wood strip, with a bad aspect ratio, is supposed to work once it experiences a change in humidity...

  9. Yes, fella - and as it is now clear, the actions of one individual who has spent all of his years in the hobby putting himself at the centre of a lot of arguments, conflicts and very personal destructive negativity across the entire U.K. scene and even reaching to pollute certain pockets of the American one too. This level of deviousness is not unique to you so don’t feel too bad; that kind of obsessiveness is not the response of normal human reasoning and social behaviour. I appreciate your words about Revival and as you’ve no doubt seen, it’s an incredibly social place where everyone is welcomed, happy and sociable without anyone feeling excluded, so no-one there would have cause to openly detest just one person (or for him to be the only person banned from having any online reach to, or allowed to attend another event) without very good grounds. As someone newer to the social scene I can understand your indifference and wanting not to get involved and can’t blame you for not wanting to put yourself in the firing line of an obsessively hateful individual. As far as criticism of substandard contributions to journalism, calling out of unsociable and professionally destructive actions and by now quite personal direct dressing-down, by now it’s seriously long overdue, completely apt and totally deserved. Sympathy grasping has been atone-tested tactic that has put off ordinary people from documenting their encounters as against their better judgment, they haven’t wanted to make things any worse for someone who clearly has a big problem. What’s sadly true about that is it isn’t a condition that deserves sympathy, it’s a sociopathic manipulation that has knowingly bought him this much time by preying on the good will of positive and reasonable people. The hundreds of people who have commented, liked and been directly or indirectly affected have now just finally got their heads together to categorically confirm the common source of the negativity and ensure it’s removed from the hobby we want to continue to enjoy.

  11. Hi Everyone! I'd just like to make my position on here absolutely clear as I've seen the previous post with an image of my Amazon review and Kieren's response. I've never seen this response and I've no idea how to see this! I can't see it in my Amazon account at all - but I'd like to state that I don't have a 'personal agenda' with anybody. What would be the point in that? Let me explain my situation and how I was unfortunate enough to have communication with this guy. Sorry for the long ramble - I want to make sure I get all my points over. I bought Kieren's book 'A Compendium of ZX Spectrum Games' a while back when I was first starting my jump into the Retro community properly. I basically went through a phase of buying anything that had the word 'Spectrum' in the title! Anyway, the book turned up and the first thing that struck me was the state it turned up in. It looked second hand, as you can see by my image on the review. I also spotted that the print quality was very poor with every image having lines through them - again this is visible in my Amazon review photos. But with this being a Speccy book and myself being a Speccy fan I hastily, and stupidly, gave it a quick flick through and left a 4 star review. I think I was probably trying to support the community and anyone creating retro Spectrum related stuff. This was silly of me to review it without really reading it THOROUGHLY, but that is my mistake. To be fair to Kieren, the layout of the book is quite nice, with the alphabetised content - although those alphabet pages sure do waste a lot of space that could have been filled with content instead. When I actually did sit down to read it properly I was shocked at the spelling grammar mistakes throughout. It's not even just once - it's all over the place. This started to annoy me because if you're publishing a book for people to spend their hard earned cash on, surely you'd run it through a spellchecker, right? As I read on I also became convinced that some of the games in the book hadn't even been played by the author at all as some of the reviews seem so generic and formulaic. Anyway, I thought it might just be me having a bad night so I left if a week or so and then read it again. It was at this point that I became really quite annoyed. I took off my Spectrum rose tinted glasses and saw this book for what it is - poorly printing, poor condition, poor spelling, poor grammar and generally a poor decision on my behalf to purchase the book. To check it wasn't just me, I gave it to my 14 year old son with the simple request - "Read this and tell me what you think". Putting aside his initial comments of the state of the book and print quality, after about 10-15 minutes, he looked up at me, held the book out and exclaimed "Who wrote this? It's a mess!". At this point I felt verified that it wasn't just me and decided to change my review so that other people wouldn't waste their money on this. I believe, and Amazon agree after speaking to them, that this is my right - to express an accurate review based on how I feel about the product. So I changed my review to a 1 star 'Avoid' review and thought no more of it. A short while afterwards, I spotted all of the kerfuffle on Facebook about a bunch of fallings out with some guy who was going around upsetting people. My initial thought was to just be glad I wasn't involved in all of it because it sounded like really nasty stuff. After seeing one post mentioning the name Kieren Hawken, I realised that this was the same guy who had written the book I'd reviewed. Still - I was glad to be out of all of that and that was that - or so I thought... However, on March 24th I Tweeted out a message from Henrique Olifiers about the first batch of accelerated Spectrum Nexts going out for shipment. I then received a response from the @RetroLaird account which had nothing to do with my Tweet but referenced my Amazon review(!) First of all, this is weird because it's nothing to do with my Tweet. He's venting at me about my review. Second of all, he's stalked me down to Twitter from my Amazon account to put this grievance up against me! I mean, what the hell??? So my initial reaction to this was shock, followed by anger, followed by hilarity which I tried to play off in my Quote Tweet - with me being honoured that he thinks I'm important enough to troll and a witty comment about name calling. If he classes me in the same trolling camp as @Octav1us, @Mr.T, Chris Wilkins etc then surely I've 'made it'!? His response to this was the following: Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe anybody deserves to be trolled. If you don't agree with somebody, just stop following them. If you don't like a bad review of a shoddily put together book, just leave it and move on. The shock news is that if you produce something, no matter what it is, there is somebody that will not like it. You just have to accept that and leave it - not stalk them down to Twitter and start commenting about it. This, to me, is totally unacceptable behaviour. You can probably see all the Twitter stuff from where it started here: https://twitter.com/SpectrumNez/status/1242506435508015118?s=20. I can't because he's blocked me now. I have found a home for Kieren's book and I hope the recipient will provide a fair and honest review on Amazon about it. Maybe they'll like it and give it 5 stars to balance out my review and all will be right with the universe again? ?‍♂️ Anyway - that's my piece. If you made it this far, thanks for your tenacity! This is the first real piece of negativity I've experienced since diving into the Retro scene. I've generally found most people so far to be absolutely excellent people, very friendly, welcoming and all on the same wavelength of enjoying Retro computers and games and I'm truly grateful to be allowed to be just a very small part of it. To meet all those 'rock star' programmers at the Revival events put on by @Mr.T is literally a dream come true for me and I couldn't be happier. It's a shame that this kind of negativity and poison exists but I'm going to take the advice I was given on Twitter, which is: Block, Forget, Move On. Peace out brothers and sisters! ❤

  12. Yes sir! In some good news, we are open today - the mall is allowing us to open if we want. I keep everything disinfected, have a UV-C germ killing air purifier and we have copper/zinc tokens (which scientifically kill viruses). So, we'll see how it goes, although most of the mall is keeping shut down (much of the food court, bunch of shops, the movie theater). Would be happy to have you drop by, where you can try out the Stranger Things premium pinball machine that we got the day before the earthquake. And to bring this back on topic:

  15. Yes, it was truly embarrassing. Even I, with no background in manufacturing could see that from the very first design pitch. Remember this? https://medium.com/@atarivcs/atari-vcs-structural-improvements-and-feature-adjustments-ba4ee3af5317 Their big announcement was going from some designer's cute but completely impractical drawing to the same old clamshell we have on 10+ years of Atari Flashback toys. With hardware, there's no benefit and a lot of risk to jumping in early, especially with an unproven, inexperienced team taking money up front.

"Unacceptable heat dissipation" = We still have no idea how to do thermals. So everything we thought was done... isn't. "Scratches on the plastic" = the Chinese plant gives Even less of a fsck than we do.

And then pretty much post the same medium update that they posted, showing all of the issues.

  20. SpectrumNez has found out, unfortunately what we have all known about Kieren for a very long time. Having a personal agenda simply means doing everything within his power, such as it is (guffaw), to make life as miserable as possible for whatever person he chooses on any given day. There is no point to it, it simply IS. Or perhaps, the point is, that he is so psychologically twisted by whatever events from his childhood have warped his train of thought into the constant narrative of self-adulation that runs on an infinite loop through the orange turnip-shaped head of his, that this IS the reason. He is a broken toy, a little wooden thing that wants to be a real boy but never shall. You had the audacity to chide him for reasons of your own, but he sees every harsh word as another bullet in the constant hail of fire coming over the foxhole he has burrowed into, to wage his war against the unbelievers, the dark fraternity plotting his demise. Now at one point, this was all just fantasy, a hornet's nest of disconnected insanity whirling around his raisin-sized brain. Unfortunately, due to his actions it might be shaping up to have some grain of truth. There ARE people who given the opportunity would do everything in their power to drag this wretch before the courts, the force him to show the evidence he claims to have in spades that will categorically prove his innocence on every charge. There are those who will not rest until his name is reviled, even more than now, throughout the community to ensure that no-one falls unwittingly into his foetid paws and gets mauled for no good reason. The general consensus of opinion is to leave him alone, to have no direct interaction with the loathsome clag-nut, but this does not mean that he cannot be shamed for any and every infraction on the freedom of others to speak as they find regarding his "books".

  26. First batch (sold out) was Mono or Stereo only. Now, we are awaiting bigger chip (59 USD), which can fit Quad Pokey with config register and maybe Covox. We are considering even bigger chip for SID or two and maybe YM2149 (AY3-8912) or two of them - everything depends on the size of code - but this chip will be even more expensive. Therefore, please do not order anything else than Mono/Stereo/Quad Pokey yet. Me and Mark (foft) will keep you informed about progress. Results are very promising and we are very excited!

  33. For a real laugh watch his latest video, where he "reviews" his own book on the 2600. I watched it. My opinion? It's awful.... Not just a little bit, totally awful. He diesnt actually appear to know anything about the book itself, flicking to random pages and is surprised at what he finds. Goes rambling about how great Andrews publishing is and how they are busy with mini64 (which he also mentions involvement with). Then plugs future volumes. Reason for his recommendation? It's cheap at 9. 99 for 168 pages (of which 27 are a single letter or the # symbol). Few issues I spotted: There aren't 10 games per letter as he says. The layout is abysmal - if I were a betting person I'd say he didn't realise that a standard vertical ebook format doesn't work in paper format. So line spacing etc don't look correct. The margins on left and right appear to be swapped meaning you cant read the pages fully due to the spine of the book. It's almost as if it's been printed one page out (have a look at the non centered single letters placement) and the marginal offsets are incorrect as a result. That's without going into the spelling or grammar as I've an aversion to fish in a barrel. Many trees died to make that book, or at least a few bushes were battered to death. BTW, yes his "remind you of christmas or birthdays" intro ctrl-v is still there.

  34. I'm not sure I understand what you would encase? The MK2 is a 40-pin DIP that goes into the original VDP socket. The headers are also the same board size, i.e. 52mm x 19mm (2" x 0.75") and are mean to remain *INSIDE* the host computer. The 22-pin FFC cable is not designed for external use, and you *will* cause damage if you decide to go that route. Yes, the DVI and VGA connectors and the header boards are big, and it will be a challenge to mount them in some computers; but I can't solve this problem for every possible computer. I don't totally follow the mounting you are describing, but these headers and the cable from the MK2 to the header are not designed or intended for external mounting, as I mentioned above. I don't like headers, but I don't have any other choice, and in a full year of trying to come up with a solution, and soliciting input from the forum, this is the design that allowed me to go forward. The original video signals from the 9918A/9928/9929, etc. are *not* generated by the F18A or the MK2. If you want the original video signals then you don't need the F18A. The primary function of the F18A and MK2 are to get an updated video signal to be able to continue to use our retro-computers with modern displays. The graphics images of the MK2 and the header boards I posted are not just fancy drawings, they are generated by KiCAD (the open source PCB software I use) and are renderings of the boards as designed. I have sent the board files to OSHpark (PCB service) to have prototype boards made. The VGA board *has* "come to be" (it was one of the main board design changes I have been working on for the last 2 or 3 weeks), and I'm just waiting to get the boards from OSHpark so I can build and test them. Yes, the full DVI spec / connector have the VGA Red, Green, Blue, Horz, and Vert pins in an analog section, and they can be separated with a passive DVI to VGA cable. The reason I can't use those pins, and it is killing me to not be able to, is due to space on the MK2, accessing enough of the FPGA's I/O, and the number of pins available on the FPC connector. I just don't have enough room to pull it off. I have to dual-purpose the TMDS signals to carry the red and green signals for VGA. And I can't get access to enough of the FPGA's pins to get an additional 12 output required for a separate VGA interface. So it has to be TMDS *or* VGA. Sucks. Staying in the confines of the 40-pin DIP outline of the original VDP has been a very big challenge with the MK2, especially since it kept feature-creeping. But the board size is one of the primary design goals of the MK2 and eliminates a lot of the physical compatibility problems of the original F18A.

  39. The desktop looks good on my 1200XL with SV 2.1 upgrade, I also have a switch to turn off composite for an even cleaner S-video signal though. No artifact issues at all. With composite on, just a minute trace, but it still is very clear and legible, but I'm also using PAL, I use my 800 for NTSC composite artifacts. I will be upgrading my 800's video with at least the resister change, when I get around to installing my Incognito. I'll do more than that if needed, once I get the finished GOS from FJC on that 64K flash reserved for it. Indeed though, I too get over-excited every time I see FJC's name with a new post on this thread, but even if it is someone else, I'm hoping it's regarding a post from @flashjazzcat with an update or surprise finish...

We even talked about it in the following thread, you forgot! : You can easily reach speeds, at least, twice faster than async divisor zero. You probably might need to disable NMI, and depending how fast you go, you might need no more than a very few ANTIC DMA cycles. Error checking is not a big problem. Maximum possible bitrate is slightly less than PHI2/3 at approx 570 kHz.
