  1. Version 3.90 of my emulator Altirra is out: http://www.virtualdub.org/altirra.html Thanks for everyone's continuing support, whether it be bug reports, feature requests, discussion, trying out the helper programs on real hardware, etc. 3.90 final is essentially the same as 3.90-test34, except for release changes. Although previous versions tended to be about six months apart, it's almost been a year since 3.20, so I figured I'd better hurry up. Highlights of the 3.90 release: Accuracy: 800 System Reset timing fixed, undocumented RMW and WSYNC timing fixes, several fixes to 65C816 direct page wrapping and Veronica, many fixes to FDC/RIOT/6809 for full disk drive emulation, improved POKEY two-tone mode emulation, more accurate power-up hardware state. Debugger: Improved disassembly window with automatic block separation and inline call target preview, more disassembly options, better loop detection in the history window, Alt+Shift+click to jump to history for a pixel. Disk drives: 810 Turbo, Amdek, and Percom AT-88 full emulation; easier file import/export in the Disk Explorer. Display: Improved PAL artifacting and color defaults, gamma-corrected frame blending, color setting import/export, PERITEL and monochrome monitor emulation, fixes to color correction logic (esp. with VBXE). Firmware: Updated AltirraOS 3.26 for improved compatibility with hardware addons and software, improved autodetection for custom OS ROMs. Tape: Faster emulation especially in warp mode, audio filter compensation for better turbo decoding, and enhanced debugging for tape issues. Video recording: Aspect ratio correction, scaling, and direct H.264/WMV compression support through Media Foundation. UI: Dark theme, improved audio monitor/scope, improved timing for slightly reduced latency. With 3.90 done, it's now time to start the 4.00 test series: http://www.virtualdub.org/beta/Altirra-4.00-test1.zip http://www.virtualdub.org/beta/Altirra-4.00-test1-src.zip First, there are a couple of breaking changes in 4.00: End of support for Windows XP SP3 and Vista. The new minimum operating system requirement is Windows 7 SP1. End of support for DirectDraw, which has not been native since Vista, and OpenGL, of which only old versions were used anyway (and was not enabled by default). New features and fixes: Palette solver: Matching color palettes in Altirra has been a long-standing issue, since it is unable to take .pal/.act files due to needing the generation parameters for the palette rather than the final colors for various features, and matching colors from real hardware is a difficult task. Pretty much everyone has their opinion on what "true colors" should be. Well, in 4.00-test1 there is now a solver to guess the parameters for you: You can either give it a PAL/ACT file, or you can give it a picture -- and although the picture needs to be a good one, it doesn't have to be perfectly straight as you can align it to compensate for projection by dragging the corner dots. It's compatible with any show-palette tool for the Atari that does 16 lumas across and 16 hues down. Click Match, and it'll start grinding on the parameters to try to get as close as possible, and tell you how good the match is. Or, you can have it overlay the current palette as dots over the picture to check the palette while manually tuning it. Debugger: On-screen watches now update continuously while stepping and the 'wx' command has options for hex formatting, bank-sensitive debugging is now supported for SpartaDOS X cartridges, improved handling of subdirectories when looking for source files, and the console output window is faster when flooded with output. Oh, and the Memory window has been improved with scrolling and more display options: Display: Added pure white monochrome mode, and fixed a bug in the high artifacting engine where chroma artifacts moved in the wrong direction for ascending hues. XEP-80: Fixed an emulation bug in the way that scrolling occurs, and added a couple of new toys to the Additions disk: an XEPVHOLD.COM tool to reprogram the XEP80's timing chain for a shorter display that's less likely to roll on modern displays, and a new ultra-speed ALTXEP8U.SYS driver that runs at symmetric 31.5Kbaud instead of 15.7K or 31.5K send / 15.7K receive. Tape: Added support for KSO Turbo 2000. Disks: Added emulation for the Percom AT88-SPD, and added 1791/1795 FDC selection for the AT-88. Fixed support for virtual SpartaDOS disks with directories and files whose names start with periods. Added a polling workaround option for virtual disks for environments where file change notifications don't work (some Wine environments). Audio: More accurate emulation of uneven volume bits, and rewrote cycle-level filtering emulation for improved high frequency aliasing rejection during downsampling. UI: Dark mode now has reskinned buttons. Added support for auto-hiding the menu bar. Fixed mouse wheel scrolling when the OS page-at-a-time option is on. H: device: Lifted 16MB limit for binary (untranslated) access, and fixed errors not being returned properly during burst I/O accesses. AltirraOS 3.27: Fixes to the printer handler for EOL handling, particularly for the Atari 1025, and improved compatibility of variable usage to work with Monkey Wrench II. Custom Devices: More scripting language constructs like break, while/do-while loops, and forward declaration of functions, better threading support, and more scripting methods for manipulating memory. Custom devices can now raise Parallel Bus Interface IRQs. Custom video outputs can now be created with either text or graphical output, and even support text select/copy like the emulator's built in ANTIC and XEP-80 video outputs. New sample custom devices: Bit-3 80 column, 1090 80-column, and a PBI-based metronome.

  7. I've been working with @RetroGameBoyz the past few weeks on a custom controller. I've always wanted an arcade Asteroids style controller and it arrived today. The case is compact and the buttons are a little smaller than standard arcade buttons to accommodate the case, but everything felt good and comfortable. Mike is great to work with. This is my fourth custom Atari controller from him (and soon a fifth -- a 4-way joystick). Unfortunately, I couldn't get Asteroids to work on my 7800 -- not sure why. I tried the bin with the Harmony cart and also an actual Asteroids cart but with both, the screen flickered on and off. I also had trouble with a few other games (e.g., Space Rocks, Phoenix)... maybe it's my setup with s-video from 7800 to RetroTINK 2X to HDMI and TV. I found that the RetroTINK can be finicky with certain signals. I actually have on hand an s-video to HDMI converter box that I ordered a month ago. I'll try that in the morning -- fingers crossed. In any case, I haven't had a chance to try the controller with the game that I most wanted to use it for, but it worked great with Star Castle, Gravitar, and Galaxian. Some games just feel more natural with only buttons.

  11. I agree, it's one of the top three. Can you imagine how things may have progressed had this capability been around in the 80's or early 90's? The TIPI has what resurrected my interest in terminal emulation and bbs software. It gives a user the ability with software like MXT that can be loaded from a URI path to start adding software to their TIPI without going through even a network configuration if they so desire.

  16. A new release (v0.5.5) is now available with the following changes: Updated A7800 to 4.0 (Windows, Linux, macOS) [Removed XBoarD Expansion option from A7800 > Console settings] Added document outline for batari Basic and 7800basic (shows banks, labels, sub-labels, functions, macros, dmaholes) Added Go to Definition and Go to References features for batari Basic and 7800basic Added missing batari Basic keywords: missile0height, missile1height (slacker) This release has some really nice developer features for bB and 7800basic users with things like Document Outline, Go to/Peek Definition and References as well as breadcrumb selection. There are keyboard and Command Palette feature access to all this functionality - spend some time to make yourself familiar! Next up is looking at Assembly! Eventually hoping this will lead to proper document related intellisense down the track also. I've been testing this whilst finalising my code review to Millie and Molly the past week and have found most usage issues I hope ? If you find anything which seems a bit odd please let me know. Features Document outline shows things such as Banks, Labels (and sub-labels), Functions and DMA Holes Peek Definition displays the code for that label Breadcrumb provides drop-down structure access Right-click on keyword to access menu Peek/Find All references shows lists of where are keyword is used Hold down Control and hover keyword (Windows, Linux), click left button to jump

NO MORE SCORES POSTED AFTER THE MIDNIGHT TIME WILL BE ACCEPTED! From this day forward....Once that clock hits 12:00am.... It is over and done. DO NOT POST SCORES. Members can PM me if you see a score after the Midnight deadline! Thanks, Vocelli

  23. Just a small update to the status of Millie and Molly. We have made a small change to enable the playback of pokey music on PAL machines to match the speed of an NTSC machine. Thanks to @RevEng for helping to identify how we could do this so we can now move forward with a release usable for both NTSC and PAL users (palettes were already sorted). As the music is very important to the game having slower playback would have been extremely disappointing as a PAL user myself. I've also added a couple of little easter eggs and animations! I'll leave that to someone to find once we release ? Also Mike has updated 7800basic with some changes around calculating rom bank usage. This shows just how close we came to not fitting in the rewind feature (banks 2 and 3) without some serious rework ?

  24. I could have. But I was busy.

  25. Thanks Mike! Some great enhancements in this new release including the ROM usage report and additional gfx block per bank! I can now see how close it was fitting the rewind feature into Millie and Molly (banks 2 and 3) ? Phew!!

  27. New V9 version! Added feature: - Put a waiting routine of 3 seconds during the credit screen. An exclamation point appears when the loading of the intro is completed, so you can skip the wait by pressing a key, consol key or joystick button. It's stored in my GitHub repository: https://github.com/Wilheim1977/ARDungeonCartridge Hope you like it! Alternate Reality - The Dungeon v9.bin

  28. The problem with all this "ideas", like AVP and Doom at launch, Capcom support, more great 2d games, etc, is that if you know the history of the console and Atari, it just wasnt possible at the time. Its not like Atari decided NOT to have AVP and Doom at launch. It just wasnt possible to have them ready for launch. As it was, both games were rushed to the market. Capcom support was not gonna happen unless the console sold well. Not the other way around. Same with any other big software house like Konami, SNK, etc. Just doesnt make sense. More great 2d games? From were? You need good developers to get good 2d games. Or you end up with the 2d equivalents of Air Cars, SuperCross 3D, etc. Like Crescent Galaxy, Bubsy, Double Dragon V, etc. Even ports of good 2d games like Raiden and Pitfall were botched attempts. Without good developers, games wont be good. Be it 2d or 3d. Looking back with all the hindsight we have now, its hard not to think that Atari shouldnt even have bothered. Sadly. Por Jaggy i had so much hope for it BITD. I am glad they tried though.

  30. Yes, well I had to make the command line for my disk access commands like save dsk1.disk or old dsk2.super So I started thinking while I was making the command line and I said shoot, what if somebody want to make some kind of cell or divider, or place a character that wasn't on the keyboard. ..a ha. This solved it. I just got to finish it up I think maybe by tomorrow or the next day.

Noticed the following while testing on my Toshiba and SONY CRTs: - The top couple of lines are cut off (see pics and attached video). - Also noticed a bit of screen roll (please see video). The game is looking great. Thanks for the latest ROM Thomas.? SIA Screen Roll.MOV

  34. I hadn't tested on real hardware yet, but I have the same effect. The problem is, that Harmony doesn't support the bankswitching (4KSC). I have created an F8SC version (V0.3, see first post). This should work with Harmony.

  36. There are a number of folks who can do it but I have to say, shipping an 800 is a recipe for heartbreak lately, unless you have original foam packing and a really big box. I’ve read too many nightmare stories in the last year or two to ever want to trust shipping an 800 if it’s all possible. Having said that, if your “Location” is accurate, there are undoubtedly a good number of Atari folks in the New England area within driving distance. I’m sure someone is capable of helping get you sorted out.

  37. ^ It has become more of a "When" than an "IF" OH dear... talk about not having any confidence. So it has become more.. IF we don't have enough money to go forward THEN GOTO Crowdfunding and beg for more money. Otherwise END. The system is GREAT! and we are all having tons of fun playing them. Just take our word for it, because there is no way we can use the internet to show you a video. These are just maintenance reply posts. Atari already has the money and are clear to call it quits any time. If they are having difficulties producing 500 units, then the other 12,000 ain't coming this year. (edit to add -allegedly- so Atari cant blame us for thier alleged massive failures) (ALLEGEDLY)

  39. Wow, I missed some drama. Particularly amused by the fact it was borne out of an incorrect assumption of the issue of RES using 32767 as an unknown line marker. Another reason for "IF X THEN" structure is that it saves precious bytes, which on any old BASIC are in short supply. This is why we have shorthand things like the ternary operator in C; saving some room. For the record, I NEVER use the ternary operator if I can help it. And if this convention bothers and offends you, don't ever look at TRS-80 color BASIC or extended color BASIC. They have CRAZY stuff, like FOR NEXT loops declared in logical structures (IF X THEN FOR I=). I think the only reason this doesn't fall apart in a logical catastrophe is they can use "NEXT" without a variable as a permanent terminator to any ongoing FOR loops. Reading the code when translating Space Trek to the TI caused me serious migraines and WTF moments.
