  1. I made a quick video of a standard HOKEY playing Commando. Sorry about the video quality, this is recorded on a phone with one hand while I try to handle the controller with the other hand. On boot it plays a jingle that's hard-coded into HOKEY memory to let you know it's there and working, which I may leave that in as a signature (though it could be disabled.) Sorry, these are not for sale yet, but will be released this year! IMG_2166.mp4 There will be multiple versions of HOKEY and prices are expected to start at $10. All allow new sound drivers to be uploaded, such as the upcoming driver for GCC's Minnie chip, and possibly other FM synthesis chips, and support for PCM and ADPCM playback via a ring buffer for seamless playback even during heavy Maria DMA (no IRQs needed!) For $10 you get the basic HOKEY, which is a single POKEY and ability to add (likely) one additional sound driver (or, possibly dual POKEY.) For a little more you get the standard HOKEY, which has more memory that should allow for dual POKEY and more sound drivers on the same chip. For the ultimate experience, for slightly more, there is the advanced HOKEY. This uses faster, more powerful hardware that should support quad POKEY, dozens of sound drivers, plus many waveforms, digital samples, and more. Also, the advanced HOKEY uses a DAC chipset for a CD player, so you can get CD-quality stereo sound if you want it. A standard 3.5mm stereo jack can be used for output.

  2. Here's a photo showing all the boxes for the games waiting to go out, except the new Jaguar games (that haven't already gone out) as those boxes were glued by the printer. These boxes have all had double-sided tape applied to one of the box flaps. Next step is to go through all these to remove the backing on the tape and then "glue" the two long flaps together. Doing this in advance will make the process of assembling the games (cartridge, manual, box insert, and poster) into the boxes once I'm ready to do that (next week!) much faster. These are going to take a TON of space, so I'm clearing off a bunch of shelving to make room for them. The red boxes in the back of the bin on the right are for Zoo Keeper. The orange boxes behind "The End" are for Deepstone Catacomb. By end of day today I will have all the pre-order games assembled except for Zoo Keeper. Most of tomorrow will be spent testing and labeling all the 2600 pre-order games that have been built. All the extra games for orders will be built next week. ..Al

  3. Hi ho, update via Marcel de Gier from our Dutch friends: They finally were able to get in contact with Berry today, he was in hospital and somehow handicapped for some time now, and his handy is broken since then. Berry promised to tell about as soon as possible. Sounds like it will take some more time, but stay tuned ? xXx

  4. Hey guys! Over these past few weeks I have made myself an rgb mod for my pal Intellivision. My Intv has two color proms in it so I was able to (with help of a diagnostic cart and my scope) determine the input and output bit coding. I made a memory map and wrote the logic in wincupl to two atf16v8cz pld's. I used an adv7125 as video dac. All this to make a pcb that will interface directly on the bottom of the STIC. The prototype gives me excellent image and colors on my framemeister. Pcbs are incoming somewhere next weekend, so hopefully I'll have a working test model soon. 7. *** Updated *** Thank you @Gallospacca for this thread. Archive updated with PAL50 and PAL60 versions of this hack. Hi there, I've been reverse engineering Smurf - Rescue in Gargamel's Castle. This is because it was done by Henry Will, IV and I had been looking at his other projects lately. I've heard the dislike of pushing up on the joystick to jump. I believe I remember reading this on usenet but it was also heard in the feedback comments on Ferg's 2600 Game by Game Podcast. Reading Henry's development notebook about this project, he states Coleco didn't want to use the fire button to jump because it would have made the game too close to Donkey Kong. Anyway, here is a hack to allow you to use the fire button to jump. I did a search for this hack prior and turned up nothing. If someone has done this already then...sorry...and no time lost for me. It was fun in my own fun way to do it. The first BANK was kind of full so I had to optimize some areas. That wasn't too hard. There are a number of areas in the code that can be optimized. Tell me how this works. I tested it in Stella for ONE_PLAYER and it seems to work fine. Smurf - Rescue in Gargamel's Caster_ACTION_BUTTON_HACK.zip

  12. It's out! Pick your version (from the first post) 9 levels demo. -The focus for this release was on the attract mode & cutscenes which are now fully reenabled! (some assets may possibly not be final) TIX, our favourite overstretched artist drew all the princess/vizier frames required for the cutscenes! Miker added a bunch more tunes for the attract mode! -Added a bunch of cart versions for faster loading and a SD disk version for maximum compatibility with stock hardware. -Fixed an old bug where the game would freeze if the prince landed on the edge of a floor tile. -NTSC should be as stable as PAL now. The next version should be final!

  16. I can relate!!! I was sitting in a high school class with the flash components I had extracted from a disposable film camera... Battery attached to a little PCB with the bulb, a capacitor and a leaf switch to "flash"... did it a few times in class, and the jock in the row behind me threatens violence if I do it again... so as I'm putting it away my finger accidentally touches the contacts on the back side of the PCB.... not just flashing again, but electrocuting my finger and leaving me writing in pain with two burn marks on my finger AS WELL AS the other guy proceeding to pummel me - double whammy LOL

  17. This is fantastic, Fred! Looks to be quite the excellent POKEY (and then some) replacement. Extra thanks for designing it very reasonably priced as well. Very much looking forward to seeing it become available to the masses...great job!

  18. I would also prefer the source (for SDX) not be open. There would be many forks and competing upgrades and variances...we have enough trouble with the swarm of DOS's we have now. The only way it would work semi-decently would be for someone to publish an actual standard, and we know that's not going to happen, or be paid attention to if it did. I agree with Mazzspeed.

  19. Sadly, I do have bad news regarding the availability of the final product. ? Some days ago, I noticed that I only had three STM32s left, which might be too few for beta testing. But when I tried to order new MCUs, I found that ALL suppliers were sold out. Eventually, I found one that sold some MCUs with a 90% premium, but their stock was also pretty low. Due to the global IC shortage, I'll have to postpone the assembly and release of the final product indefinitely, until STM32s become available again. I have no idea when this will happen. ? The upside is that I'll have more time for polishing. I really thought that the shortage would only apply to the big players, but not my little project This has no effect on beta-testing, though, which will happen in July or August.

  24. Here's another photo of carts in progress. The stacks of carts on the left are some carts (nearly 100) waiting to be cleaned with Goo Gone. The carts on the right are drying after being cleaned. About to go assemble all of "The End" and "Deepstone Catacomb" carts, and then I'll be attacking the carts on the left with Goo Gone those so I can use them tomorrow. In other news, here's an example of a box that had to be reprinted as the colors were off. The box on the left is from the original run, and the red Atari 7800 logo and "DRAGON'S CACHE" title that appears on the spines and top and bottom are not supposed to be red (which is the color Atari used for 2600 games). Also, the Dragon's Cache logo, screenshots on the back, and artwork on the front were a bit washed out. The printer re-ran these, and I received them yesterday. The reprinted boxes look perfect, using the maroon color to more closely match the color Atari used for their 7800 releases, as well as the manuals and labels. And the art isn't washed out--look at the background in the "Dragon's Cache" logo, you can see it's quite a bit lighter on the box on the left. Now imagine how much fun it is when you print 20 different boxes, 30 different manuals, and 35 different labels all at the same time, using three different companies (the reason these numbers are different is I printed manuals and labels for some older games as well as the new ones). Plus posters for games (Venture Reloaded and Zoo Keeper), postcards for two different games (Adventure II XE and reBOOTed), and a soundtrack CD (for Last Strike). Do not recommend, unless you enjoy pulling your hair out. Back to work!! ..Al

  26. Here's what I was thinking: In F18A programs which modify the palette, this can have the entertaining consequence of displaying standard graphics in whatever modified palette for subsequent purposes, if reset during display of the modified palette. So for example, this is the start screen and this is TI-Writer, after resetting from Super TI-99 Bros: So my question is - particularly with the help of the FinalGROM's ability to select any new cart without powering off the system - wouldn't it be cool to have a palette tweaking tool which effectively allows you to modify the palette before going into Multiplan, or TI-Writer, or E/A, or whatever. So that if your favourite application uses Grey on Blue, but you'd rather it used Black on Cyan, you can modify the palette accordingly, from a simple menu. There are so many programs which really only use a text color and background color that giving them alternate two-color palettes in this way would be pretty simple.

  27. This one was a lot of work, but Dig Dug has been modified for the PlusCart High Score Club. PlusCart users can find the PAL, PAL60, and NTSC versions in the PlusStore directory "Public ROMs\PlusROMs\High Score Club" The NTSC version can be played online in javatari.js. The ROM-file can also be played with Gopher2600. The "PlusCart High Score Club" page for Dig Dug: https://highscore.firmaplus.de/?game_id=41

  32. I have VBXE and Sophia 2 in my 1088XEL, so I already considered this niche requirement. It's perfectly possible to fit all these plugins into the available 2K of space, and immediately before I released the firmware last week, I spent an afternoon optimising the sources to ensure everything would fit. The plugin source code is available on the download page, but if you don't want to mess around with the defines at the top of the file, I'll make you a build myself. So - to be clear - you want an VBSOS2ST plugin, basically (VBXE without the NTSC palette option, Sophia 2, Stereo Pokey and SIDE2 support).

  33. I'm resolved to sign up for Transferwise to accept payments and give the buyers a $5 discount to pay with that method. I'm sick of PayPal. I have to counsel my customers to not let the bastards convert the money they send and skim 4 percent along with their poor exchange rates and high fees. I intend to offer a discount for Interac payments for Canadians and discourage PayPal use by adding the fees.

  34. in the attachment, the proposed sounds are in sequence: Bell, Key, Error, Notice, Load / Save, Beep (255 notes) The set of sound procedures on Gtia takes 70 60 bytes (70 with the ability to generate noise but this is unnecessary) and gives you the ability to create your own sounds - low cost, and if someone insists, he can even compose music on GTIA thanks to the Beep command I decompiled a lot of games ... a lot sound_engine-notification.obx

  37. I was a young father at the time. I had two young boys. My mom worked for GTE/Lenkurt in San Carlos California. She got a GTE/Sylvania for Christmas in, it think 1980. They were offering a generous discount to employees. She kept it at her house for the grandkids...so she was assured frequent visits. I could not afford one at that time but about 9 months later we got one for our house. Ours was a standard Mattel unit. It is one of my oldest son's best childhood memories. Sometime around 2008 he started collecting games...now we do it together. We have a pretty damn good collection at this point. So that GTE/Sylvania morhped into something special for us. https://www.flickr.com/photos/13839114@N00/albums

  41. Welcome. For me the TI is nostalgic... as I grew up with one. But there are some great games and current homebrew developers. You can write games on this system without knowing assembly language, and the community is super active and helpful. Some of the coolest people I've met in my life are members of this community. Plus it's a weird computer with a bunch of weird crap going on. ? Can't beat that.

  47. Not my fault buddy. People were complaining (in the PoP thread) long before I commented, and I only commented because you used a version of XBIOS which doesn't work with PBI devices and then seemed to think I was obliged to suggest something better. Use the PBI enabled version if you regard my other suggestions with such disdain. Or not... As you wish. I had no desire to discuss the matter in this thread, but you turned up and pressed the issue. And I'm sure that describing users as 'clueless' will really broaden the XBIOS fan base. Ignore my reluctant suggestions. I do not care whether PoP is usable on U1MB/SIDE3 or not. Thanks in advance for not coming back.

  48. Speaking as someone who has no control over what does or does not happen with the SDX source: if it were to be released, I'd be a lot happier with a) the most recent version and b) the knowledge that it was released without a shadow of dubiousness hanging over it.
