  2. Why wasn't Goonies II just released as Goonies in North America without the roman numerals? We didn't get the first game here.

we did in the play choice 10 and vs system

Apple II, Atari 8-bit, and C64, in North America all received a Goonies port.

What rubbish, looks like a CoCo 2 port. lol

Wait, I see there's a CoCo 3 version... and it looks awesome!

i watched the whole vid on youtube, it pretty much sums up every Mario 64 run i've seen, lol. my son and i both cracked up.

  4. Gamefaqs message board archives threads way too quickly. The NES board has threads on the first page from a few weeks ago archived.

  5. Level 32 max out in Nintendo Tetris. I don't know how it's humanly possible to play at that speed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cmz0djfeIVc

If you just watch the pieces and not the player, you get the impression he's not even trying that hard.

  6. This kid almost reached level 32 in Nintendo Tetris.

  7. Would you consider the Playstation 2 to be a retro or classic console at this point? It's now as old as the Colecovision was when the Playstation 2 came out. And that makes me feel old.

I believe the DC got a honorary retro label due to it was the last console Sega made. It was accepted as retro even before the N64 was. But yes, that is a strange way to define it, if it meant nearly the end of a company it makes people nostalgic, but if the company made enough profit to live on, not so much.

    3. copper20

      copper20

Honestly I consider Sega Saturn to be the last of the retro systems.

    4. Nathan Strum

      Nathan Strum

Not classic or retro. It's modern. As modern as one of them Sega Genesis things the kids are all playing now.

Anyway, that shouldn't make you feel old.

What should make you feel old is that we're now as far away from the release of the original Star Wars, as Star Wars was from the middle of the Great Depression.

  8. Kung Fu Heroes deserves mention as one of the hardest NES games. I've been trying for days to beat this, but it gets ridiculous in the later levels.

    1. retrorussell

      retrorussell

It is really hard, but IMHO not that great a game and not worth the trouble of sticking with it.

    2. mbd30

I actually like this game a lot. Guilty pleasure, maybe?

    3. Jess Ragan

The arcade version was worse. I mean, it looked better, but even more frustrating.

  9. Too bad this Alex Jones Sega CD game isn't real.

      Jinroh

It isn't real, but us homebrewers can collectively make it real. It's God's work.

  10. Anyone watched the "Console Wars" channel on Youtube? It looks like Game Sack has inspired an imitator.

    1. Gabriel

      Gabriel

Yep. I stumbled upon them quite some time back. Kind of iffy show, but I'll watch it if there's nothing else new.

  11. "Trojan" is a fun, addictive game. I got it for $1.99 plus shipping and I've had a lot of fun with it. It's like a much better "Rush'n Attack" with sword and shield.

    1. Papa

      Papa

One of my first NES games back in the day. I managed to beat Achilles eventually!

    2. mbd30

      mbd30

I got the game just the other day and I beat it today. Not a long or very difficult game, but fun. The difficulty is comparable to "Golden Axe" on the Sega Genesis.

  12. I finally no-deathed "Ninja Gaiden." I've always screwed up at least once per game, but I finally did it. Yay.

Well done! Did you use the sawblade icon? It really helps on bosses.

    3. mbd30

      mbd30

I usually use the sawblade on the first two bosses and the two dog boss.

  13. I beat NES "Batman" without a game over! I only lost one life on the fourth stage. This was a tough one to one credit clear. You have to rely on enemy respawns to keep replenishing health.

I can beat Mega Man, Castlevania, CV 3 Dracula's Curse, Contra, Legend of Zelda, and Adventure of Link without losing a life. But Batman is insane hard, regardless of life losing or credit clear. I tip my cap to you. Tough as nails game.

    4. Cobra Kai

      Cobra Kai

ok mbd30, it's time to tackle Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Ultra version)

  14. Happy Thanksgiving! BTW, I finally upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 today and it seems to be working fine.

      Thanks.

I've been trying to get through Volkmire's Inferno in "Battletoads" but it gets so fast near the end that I don't know that my reflexes are up to it. I may have to use a warp to make progress.

  15. The cheapest eBay price for "MUSHA" right now is $300. I remember when I used to rent this for $1 when it came out. I wish I'd bought some copies.

I remember when it cost $15 for a CIB copy. Then I remember when $50 was a good deal (literally just three years ago). It's crazy how much it has jumped.. Whatever collector bug has hit the SNES, it's obviously made its way over to the Genesis now.

Just get the EverDrive-MD v3 from Krikzz and download the Genesis ROM's - you won't bother buying another loose cart again.

  16. I finally beat "Jackal"! And I only had several lives and grenades when I made it to the final boss and took him down. Don't ask me to do it again.

So when are you going to beat Battletoads? It sounds like you are ready.

    4. mbd30

      mbd30

I finally got past the snake pit today and played a little bit of Volkmire's.

I had to take a break from Battletoads for awhile so I focuses on beating Ninja Gaiden III. Yes, that game seems easy and relaxing compared to Battletoads.

  17. Anyone else have an issue with controller cables kind of twisting and bunching up? Both my Genesis and NES controllers have this issue. I frequently have to straighten my NES controller cable.

    2. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

I wrap my cables into a loose loop, about the span of my hand, then twist them into a figure-8 and bind them in the middle with a twist tie. I don't use rubber bands (they dry out and leave sticky residue), and I don't use zip ties since they have to be cut off.

The key is to keep the cables loose and free of sharp bends: if you wrap them tightly around the controller or tie them into sheepshank knots, they'll be much harder to straighten.

    3. GoldenWheels

      GoldenWheels

Yes....my SNES and Genesis cables have "twisted" awfully. This has 0 to do with wrapping the cord or not, as I have handled different controllers different ways. Straight to start, and then over time, you;d think someone was spinning the damn things like a disco ball.

      zylon

I hate it when I get my schwartz cable twisted

  18. Made it to act 7 in Ninja Gaiden III. I'm getting so close to beating this. BTW, the bosses in this game are super easy.

    1. Dragon Princess Yushira

      Dragon Princess Yushira

The gripeful thing about NG3 is the timekeeping. It don't reset once you clear part of an act.

    2. mbd30

      mbd30

That's what makes it very difficult to do a no death run of this game... for people who are good enough to not die except for the time limit on act 7.

  19. Made it all the way to act 6 in NES "Ninja Gaiden III" today. I'm so thankful for the extra life you can keep getting in act 5-2. Sometimes this game is generous. Act 6 is a nightmare.

    1. Austin

      Austin

Just memorize the enemy placement, and you are good. Unlike the other two games, enemies (like the flying ones) don't constantly respawn.

    2. mbd30

      mbd30

This game definitely gets easier with practice and memorization.

At first I thought that act 5 would be impossible then then I figured out ways to get through it.

  20. The Battletoads "snake pit" is so frustrating. I've been trying to clear the third screen. At least I can get to that level fairly easily without using warps.

If your nearby mall has a FYE store, then get yourself a USB SNES gamepad. It's great for using with Nintendo emulators...

NEVER play anything system on an LCD TV that came out before the Xbox and Gamecube.

    4. mbd30

      mbd30

Yep. Because I'm a retro gamer who doesn't care much about new games, I always want to have a CRT around.

  21. The $500 "Air Raid" auction thread is comedy gold. I was alerted to it by the Pat the Nes Punk video about it.

    1. SoulBlazer

      SoulBlazer

Like they said, we've had two great threads here recently. :)

  22. I nabbed Ninja Gaiden III online for $40. I know why i got it so cheap. I had to clean it a few times to get it to play and it's still kind of finicky, but it plays. And the cart looks good. Egads, this is a tough game. Even getting through the second act is a challenge if you're rusty.

I picked up a copy in July at a gameshow for 45 .

  23. I finally beat "Ninja Gaiden 2" without a game over today. I can't believe I thought this game was hard.

    3. SoulBlazer

      SoulBlazer

Like I said, I always felt this was the easiest of the three games.

    4. mbd30

      mbd30

There are some tricky level designs that make the game seem more challenging at first. The environmental conditions take some getting used to.

But it's easier than the first game in a lot of other ways. You get the two clones. With two clones and ninpo you can defeat anything. You now have the fire shield as an item. The last level in NG2 is much easier than act 6 in NG1. The final bosses are also easier, except that I think the second form is still tough with just the sword.

  24. "Lifeforce". Ugh. Once you get killed and lose your upgrades in stage 3, the game is basically over. This game frustrates the heck out of me.

I thought I beat the game at level 6 but nope it kicked me back to 4 and I ran out of continues. Used the Konami code.
