I think my comment about Jumpman being ugly was a poor choice, for me the graphics were more functional than pretty, the animation was ok but in the end it was a stick man and blocks / basic shapes BUT the game ROCKED, I still play it every week as I do Spelunker although I like the NES version much better (its great). Jumpman is always the first game that springs to mind when someone asks about the 8bit which considering we have titles like Star Raiders etc that makes Jumpman pretty awesome in my book.
As for game criticism of newer titles, if its helpful then fine but attacking a game is a no no for me (yes I know, I called Jumpman ugly ), if you don't like a game because you believe the gfx suck then fine, but if you feel the need to publicly express yourself then at least have the decency to be polite about it, I've seen some really nasty comments re games across various formats which are just plain ignorant. There are many games I think are sub standard to others but the simple fact is that I myself could not even code something of that quality so I salute the game maker, at least he or she made an effort...More than I can do..
As said before, I don't care what the eye candy is like, its the game I play and how it plays, I look at some of the stuff I see on these so called next gen machines and they look stunning but they play like a dogs dinner, give me good old jumpman every time, if a dev gets the gameplay right it should have every chance, of course there will be those that may look and say "its not that pretty" but the TRUE gamer will see past that and see the playability. Lord knows the versions of Lode Runner I've seen with 3D graphics etc and loads of colour but NONE play like Doug's original.
And I have to say that some of the most beautiful games I've ever played had NO graphics, most of the Infocom range of adventures were so well written that the words alone conveyed and created jaw dropping scenes in your head, I for one could sit with one of their games and lose hours and hours just enjoying the magic it created, brilliant stuff.
