  1. Watched an episode of Knight Rider on one of the antenna channels today, they added 5000 megabits of data to KITT as an upgrade.  A whopping 625MB!  And Jason Bateman was a kid in it.

    1. Keatah

      Keatah

Back in those days you could do a lot with 625MB. No bullshit bloat from 100MB browsers, no ads, no windows 10, no MAME bloat. It was all real active code that DID something!

    2. Amstari

      Amstari

Haha! Reminds me how Johnny Mnemonic had 80GB data storage in his brain. That was huge in 1995!

    3. patroclus99

      patroclus99

Yes, which explains why Devon needed that tractor-trailer rig, because they needed to hook KITT up to an IBM 3084 mainframe, which transferred the updates vis-a-vis a 9600 beee-brrrr-brrrrt .... beeeeeeee 8-N-1 modem, which also explains why that rig had a kick-ass sleeper-cab complete with a Betamax and a minibar, because a gargantuan 625MB update might take forrrr-evvvv-er.

Incidentally, that red WHIRRRL-a-whir thingy on top of the hood was actually a prototype de-multiplexing IR-port receiver which kind of sped things up.

      I'm not making this up!

  2. Alestorm is coming to my city, and I have tickets!  Thanks to either @save2600 or @GoldLeader, don't remember which one of your posts/comments introduced me to them about 6 years ago.

WOOHOO!!! That's Awesome!   I used to mention them quite a bit.  :)

    2. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

And Elvenking is opening!  I like them too! (YMMV)  Looks like the closest they are coming to me would be Omaha, NE but that's an 8 hour drive if memory serves (We did do that once for a concert...)...These days,  I'm making sure I have the energy to drive down to Denver Sunday to see my friends' bands play.  And that's only 2 hours away ;)

      DragonGrafx-16

@GoldLeader Only a 4 hour drive for me but... I got no money lol

  3. Our old dog is apparently mostly deaf.  We didn't have to give the doggie xanax this year, she didn't notice the neighborhood fireworks at all, even while outside.

      Well...silver lining.

    2. bent_pin

      bent_pin

I'm happy your doggo didn't have to deal with the anxiety this year. Consider a smoke alarm with a strobe light. They make them for deaf people, and it might help her to help you.

      i'm glad doggo didn't have issues.  :)

we're a cat house (ha). our two oldest cats (10 years old) were annoyed it disturbed their sleeping, but our youngest (4) was acting like it was the end-times. poor kitty.

  4. All these buffet incident mentions remind me of the old macaroni and beef email forward.  (Language warning!)

Oh my, I have never seen that one!  And then I noticed the domain name....

  5. Holy cow - I have always had 18+ allowed on Steam and am no prude, but this year's discovery queue has some outright hardcore porno games.

Game engines have probably just  made it easier for these accomplishments for smaller developers.

Anyway, back to some demo videos...

      Frozone212

Hardcore porn shouldn't even be ALLOWED on steam. I thought they had higher standards then this. How i miss 2004

      thanatos

@Rick Dangerous if you must know, the one that made me go "Holy crap!" for the fact it exists and is on Steam was "Operation Lovecraft: Fallen Doll"

Beware to anyone easily offended!  This ain't no Custer's Revenge!

  6. Finally got through my post-30+ year playthrough of Zelda 2.  Only 2 games/1 retry.  (Don't ask how many savestates...)  :D

Now deciding what's next.  Metroid, SM2/3?  Do I dare even try Ninja Gaiden, which I never managed to beat the final boss back then because the 2nd to last was so awful?

    1. wongojack

      wongojack

From that list, I would pick Metroid.  It's much less annoying than the rest of your list.

    2. thanatos

      thanatos

Thought of another one I had beaten - Kid Icarus, might do that next.   Metroid seems easy with maps.

    3. Razzie.P

      Razzie.P

I've always felt Ninja Gaiden was always pretty easy up until that last bit.  Those bosses, yeah... those'll probably be a pain even with save states.   Maybe rewinds or something might help.   But yep, if you have a map, Metroid isn't hard at all

  7. I don't remember Zelda 2 being such a M$%^$%#@^&ing B*%^h back in the day.  I remember it being fun.

My new playthough is becoming painful.  Thank the modern nerds for savestates!

Nostalgia can be used for good, or it can screw us up so badly that there's no point in reliving the past.

In my case, Rebuying Goldeneye. Was hyped, so disappointed

Select Cancel the first life/magic and go for the attack upgrade.  Those Bubble skulls are killable(Lots a stabbing) and worth 50 exp points.  Find exp bags.  Every 6th enemy you kill will drop a potion/exp bag. Once find a 1up on the overworld, don't collect and remember the location. You'll need it for the Great Palace. Remember where red potion in palace are, they respawn upon leaving/entering palace.  One town folks don't know which way is east or west telling you where Payapa Palace is.  I am not Error.

Had a lady tell me the other day that she stayed home from work to get a FedEx package that she missed the day before, note said they'd try the next day. She saw the FedEx truck pull up and the driver got out with NO package and slapped another note on the door and took off!

  10. You think Star Trek: The Motion Picture was bad in the theater?  Try being 10 years old and being brought to Dune at 8PM.

    1. IntelliMission

      IntelliMission

The only I-shouldn't-be-watching-this-movie moment in my childhood was when my mom brought me to Batman in 1989 (PG13, I was 9). The violence was not much more than the DC comic books I was reading at the time, but seeing it on the screen was different. I vividly remember "the taste of cool violence" when the Joker was killing people for fun.

Dune is kind of scary even for some adults and I found it disturbing the times I watched it on the TV as a kid, so watching it at 10 years old on the big screen must have been a traumatic experience.

As a kid, I don't think my parents ever brought me to a movie that was too complex or without enough action. In retrospective, it would have been cool.

    2. thanatos

      thanatos

Oh, I don't mean trauma or scariness, that stuff I thought was neat.  Most of the movie was so slowly paced I slept for at least half of it.

    3. doctorclu

      doctorclu

Didn't see Dune in the theaters.  Hope to remedy that with the next Dune movie.  :D

  11. I have a brief cameo in the latest Kent Rollins youtube video.  But even the few here that have actually met me might not even spot it.

    1. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

Awesome!   Now,  I don't know who that is...At first speed read,  I thought it said Kenny Loggins, but then I read it again even quicker, and came up with Henry Rollins...So I read it regular speed instead of trying to get through it in .04 nanoseconds and thought Cool!  Who's Kent Rollins?   (heh)

look on the bright side, your heating bill should end up lower

    2. thanatos

      thanatos

Probably not much, sadly.  The heating bill in winter is half what the AC summer cost is.  But maybe this will help with that too.

Ours would just randomly lock up from time to time.  Needed a reset.  Had it repaired a few times, but it never fixed it.  Was just old.  We did the reset method for years.. ;-)   Finally replaced it last year...  The newer ones are much more efficient, so that is nice.  But of course, it will take ages to offset the cost of a new one.  But that wasn't the driver to replace it, just a nice benefit.  Good luck!

  13. Showed my wife the new Ford Bronco video.  Might have been the stupidest thing I have ever done.

  16. I hate Windows 10 so much as well as all the modern website UX.  I may have to figure out how to be an electrician or something to get out of IT, because in 10 years I won't be able to stand using computers anymore.

    2. thanatos

      thanatos

It's not the cosmetic stuff, I've figured that all out.  It's how it will re-enable services and such that I told it to disable.  Or ones that it won't let you disable without super 3rd party hacks.  Not to mention all the telemetry.

It's my damn PC, stop changing what I want it to do!

    3. CPUWIZ

      CPUWIZ

It takes a lot of digging, to find all the shit they hid.  I agree, it sucks.  Luckily, my monster PC was configured by security IT services, from my company, creepy shit they can do with it remotely, fully secure.  Took me forever to do half of it, to my own machines.  Still dual booting Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 10 Pro, on my own shit.  Some drivers don't work on 10.

  18. I realized the only time I watch 3D movies at home is when my wife is out of town, because they give her headaches.

And yes, I am one of the three people that liked the 3D TVs, and thankfully mine still works.

    1. Flojomojo

      Flojomojo

I have a 3D TV, and some glasses I've never used. What are the best titles? Are they readily available, or stupid expensive?

    2. thanatos

      thanatos

Tron Legacy is probably my favorite.  Ready Player One is good, Pacific Rim, while kind of a dumb movie, has really good 3D.

Just check Amazon, most don't look overpriced compared to normal.  The used media stores around here put the 3D Blu Rays in a separate section so they're easy to find.  Oh, and they're plentiful on eBay too.

That's hilarious. The dude ought to post better pics if he wants that much. Looks like he took those pics with a circa 2002 flip phone. Crappy pics hide flaws. Plus the all CAPS is douchey. He probably has a mullet.

  21. Someone mentioned Horizon as Moon Patrol II. Any game that starts at the beginning of a stage after death is evil.

    2. retrorandy

      retrorandy

Strangely enough I played this game once way back at an arcade in Berkeley in 1985 or so. I was blown away and I swear my hazy memory remembers the marquee at that time actually said, "Moon Patrol II" or something like that. So glad for the internets and to be able to play it again all these years later. It is an awesome game, but yeah thank goodness for modern day save states when playing it via an emulator.
