  1. It's on the cart

Think you have to open the console up to see if you have a revision D or E board but..

Ah okay. So I'll take the cart out of the case and see about these jumpers. And I'll open up the console to see if I can determine which board I have. Thanks for your help!

  2. I forgot that Flip wrote a test program which is on the multicart which includes a RAM test, did you try that ? The cart port is fairly chunky, should be fairly reliable ?

I actually did once I realized that the multi cart came with all these diagnostics. It passed the RAM test as well as all the others so I'm not sure what the issue is.

  3. I can't see why your console would behave like that. Every reset/power up should be a fresh start. There may be some bugs in the games but not something that obvious. So if you reset Space Invaders it should work again even if there is a bug.

Most of the other games (all ?) use the built in Chip-8 type language which uses memory in a very specific way, whereas my games use it in different ways. Maybe a stuck bit in the data RAM memory or something ?

It's odd to me as well. I just tried it and the ship in Invaders won't move at all, but it does fire. An odd pattern I've noticed is that if I spray the cartridge port with an air can and then put the multicart in and power it up, the ship does move left and right and works fine for maybe under a minute before the ship slowly stops responding. I was wondering if it was something buggy with my console or perhaps an issue with the cartridge port. From the looks of things there might be hair and other debris deep inside that I'm not reaching. I was thinking of acquiring another console in the future and comparing.

  4. I'm noticing some glitches with my console. In Space Invaders, I can't move left or right. I cleaned the cartridge port contacts several times with an air can. Initially right after booting it up, I could move the ship left or right. But slowly it stopped being able to move. In Kaboom I can move left or right but there are moments where it's sluggish. Berserk seems to crash after a while. Pac-Man works flawlessly. Is something up with my unit?

  5. Originally I was supposed to receive my box yesterday - I started tracking it quite often once I saw that folks on here started receiving theirs. ;) And then it was delayed. So it arrived this afternoon, and I have to say that it was well worth the anticipation that built up due to the additional wait! The box looks AMAZING! You did such a GREAT job with it. I love how shiny and new it looks yet how classic and retro it feels. It feels as if it were 1977 and I had just bought one of the original games for the first time. It blends in nicely with the originals. Now I want to collect more original boxed games. Well done!

Also I took a chance and bought an as-is console and eBay and fortunately it works! I've been able to finally play the multicart too and absolutely LOVE it! Really brings the RCA S2 to life!

  6. As many people requested, I am making a box for the multicarts.

These will be a separate optional order that will be purchased thru me and not flip.

They will use original rca s2 game boxes from common games that are rewrapped with the new multicart graphics.

I can probably do between 25 and 30 of these with my current supplies.

While I won't start an official preorder yet, or ask for funds yet....if anybody wants to be put down for 1, please let me know and I will start a list of interested people to help gauge interest. :)

    Edit:

Well, may as well start the box preorder list since I am getting messages ;)

    1. Flip

    2. stupus

    3. Ed keefe

    4. Blazing lazers

    5. Anonymous ebay bingo buyer

    6. Toymailman

    7. eebuckeye

I can't say how many I will make, probably at least 25.

Please only ask for 1 per multicart ordered from flip.

Thank you for this! I'd love a box too, please add me to the list!

  7. Thank you for this bump! I am watching it, but needed the reminder so thank you!, and I had a feeling from the post that the seller was a fellow retro gamer. Awesome! Great collection. Thank you. I'm looking to have an RCA S2 in my collection again. It's one of those offbeat consoles I like.

That exhibit looks awesome! I hope someone does go and can do a report-back.

I'd also like to give a free bump to the following auction:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/201568799699?euid=6ea221dfeb4542e3bbcf9288de245ced&cp=1

It's from Mike Pelletier, who also wrote the following article over at old-computers:

Great guy, who was also kind enough to relate the following information: several years ago, there was an Ebay listing for the Studio II Tester. Does anyone here know anything more about this, or even who won it? This is good news, as it indicates that at least one is still out there somewhere, and might be traceable.

  8. It's funny you say that because earlier this year (okay, *last* year :P) I actually did have it out for a little while, set up on the big CRT in my game room with my PlayStation 2 and Atari XEGS. I actually wish I could set it up in its own little corner somewhere with one of my old b/w CRTs because every once in a while I get an itch to mess around with it, but not enough to bother getting it out and setting it up (hooking up the switchbox is sort of an inconvenience).

Or maybe I should just leave it hooked up and displayed with the big LCD in the living room. :-D

I'm still adjusting to this being a new year too. :P I agree the switchbox is annoying. When I had an RCA S2 (note to self acquire a new one this year because you like quirky game consoles), my desire to play it was usually defeated by having to hook up the switchbox. Plus I have an antenna so I have to unscrew it to put the RCA Studio II in. Maybe when I get an S2 I should set it up on its own TV too. Hook it up to your big LCD, let people be amazed by the hi-res graphics and surround sound.

  9. In unrelated news (but related to the Studio II), I finally got a copy of Gunfighter/Moonship Battle! :-D It's loose but the labels are very clean (for Studio II cartridge labels). It was sneaked in with a lot of CIB commons so I got for pretty cheap, too. :)

Now to track down a box and manual...

Niiiiice!!! Have you played it yet? I was always intrigued by that game, not just given how rare it is but that it actually appears to be an arcade like game on the Studio II. Have fun!

  10. Sounds like I need to start learning how to make videos.

I used to write reviews (I've got a couple on my blog, link in sig), but I'd get carried away and go probably *too* in-depth and they'd take me forever.

Going to have to check out your blog. :) I would also like to see more video reviews of late 70s consoles, in particular the RCA Studio II and Channel F.

  11. It's amazing to me how many people, even experienced collectors, can't seem to tell a heavy sixer from a light sixer. It ain't hard. ;)

Tip for noobs and those who should know better :P : you want to look at the front of the console. On a heavy, the corners and sides curve straight up and the front bottom edge gently curves (it's subtle but you can see it if you're looking for it). On a light, the corners are sharp and the sides extend outward at an angle, and the front bottom edge is straight; light sixers look much more angular. Yes, the molded base/sides are thicker on heavy but that can tricky to discern in a bad photo. Curved corners/curved bottom edge vs. wedged corners/straight bottom edge is the easiest way to tell.

Or, if it looks like a 4-switch but with six switches, it's a light sixer. :-D

Thank you for this easy description. I'm not not a noob but kinda since I've only owned a 4-switch and have casually collected/gamed for years. This thread has been inspiring, I may get a heavy sixer at some point so this will come in handy.

  12. Hey, does anyone have a Namco Ms. Pac-Man Plug n Play they're willing to part with? A co-worker of mine had one of these that he loved, but I guess it broke. I told him I'd help him find a new one. :) This is the particular model that he had:

    11v2kwl.jpg

    It has the following games:

    Ms. Pac-Man

    Xevious

    Mappy

    Pole Position

    Galaga

Please feel free to reply on here or send me a message.

    Many thanks!

  13. I think the best Odyssey homebrew is still KTAA!, from back around 2003. Whether that's a testament to KTAA!'s quality or an indictment of the Odyssey homebrew scene, I leave to you to decide. Either way, it's probably the kind of game you're looking for: shooting stuff, collecting powerups, and battling across multiple levels. Great game.

The Revival games in general are kind of let-downs, IMO. The games are often overly simplistic (often involving nothing more than dodging things, and I credit the Mage games for being exceptions), and the labels on the cartridges I've seen are surprisingly poor quality; they look like they were printed with an inkjet printer. You just expect more from them. The best game I played from Revival was probably Air Assault, honestly, though it's nothing more than a prettier version of the old BASIC Blitz/Bomber/City Bomber games that proliferated on home computers in the late '70s and early '80s. Mayhem is okay, too, being essentially an updated version of the old Channel F game Dodge It.

IIRC with Mage, you only avoid enemies and can't actually fight them. I only played the first one, and only briefly (it didn't do much for me), so I could be mistaken, and I can't speak for the second and third games.

(And not to pile on Revival--and this is just a personal preference--but I can't stand the horizontal line graphics design that appears in almost all of their games. It's especially garish in Cavity, for example.)

Don't forget to check out Packrat Video Games as well. The selection is a little bit slimmer, but I like the games better overall (Planet Lander and Puzzle Piece Panic are very good).

I have to concur here. When I did have an O2, the tipping point for me was when Revival decided to make homebrews for it. I thought yay the O2 is now getting some homebrew love. I ordered directly from them so I remember them being kinda pricey and very much a let down when I did get the games. They never seemed to measure up in terms of excitement and complexity, although visually I thought a lot of them looked great, I found the game play shallow. I concur with the labels, they're of rather poor quality, and for that much money, I felt I would've been better off just hunting down original titles. Before I sold the O2, I sold all my Revival games and didn't miss them at all. I'm blown away that I didn't realize how close Mayhem is to Dodge It, being a Channel F aficionado. :) I've never played KTAA but I've heard nothing but good things about it.

  14. Hey Atari 2008, I did have really good luck with the 2 way switch along the lines as my original post. I was able to have two of them tied to one master for the ability to have 4 systems selectable with no perceivable loss in quality... it was when I wanted to add a 5th system that complaints about how crazy it looked and how hard it was to figure out arose. If you are just wanting to switch between two devices, the two-way switch as pictured gets a high recommendation from me.

Hey SilvaHaloOne! Thank you for that recommendation. I see they have gold plated ones pretty cheaply on eBay. That should work perfectly for since I'm just trying to connect the antenna and the 2600. Hope your new arrangement works out for you! :)
