Steve Cartwright streaming this evening on Twitch
driph posted a topic in Classic Console Discussion
Just tossing out a heads up, one of the clients our studio works with has a handful of early Atari era game devs on their team, and they are starting a series of livestreams to banter and show off their dice game. Tonight's guest is Steve Cartwright (Barnstorming, Seaquest, etc), who is the design lead on the project. Stream is at 5:00 pm PDT (8:00pm EDT). Talked with them a few minutes ago and they are totally fine with the stream derailing into game history chat night. :] http://twitch.tv/shakeitupdice -
This! I'm all for heavily targeted advertising if it circulates money within the community. I'm not sure how the particular system you are implementing works, but often you can set up the rotation so that your own content cycles with the ads from the network. Having Atariage new releases and similar products show up in the ad rotation would be a great way to make the advertising system feel more like a benefit than a hindrance (alongside the inherent benefit of funding the site).

AV 417493 133 Looks like someone went bonkers with the date stamp on this one:

Out of curiosity, have the available offerings changed since last year, when this thread first began? Like the OP, I'd like to archive my collection of floppy disks while they are still readable (knock on wood). If not, I'll post my own results once I've got everything on hand.

Coleco Chameleon .... hardware speculations?
driph replied to phoenixdownita's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
I didn't write features so I've only got one or two columns reprinted in the Replay book, but I had no idea it was happening until I saw the table of contents. I'm assuming it's the same way with anyone else who wrote for the magazine. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -

Unless there have been unannounced changes, I believe David Craddock is still onboard as EIC (his first issue was the most recent). -

Yeah, I like what Parish etc are writing, and Kohler's collecting columns have been a fun read. As far as brick and mortar stores go, RETRO is available at Barnes & Noble and various local game shops now. Still wish Retro Gamer had the $50 US subscription plan going, that was a hell of a deal. -

Unfortunately, there's no consumer software out there yet that'll transcribe audio in a way that's useful for interviewing – no separation of speakers, word recognition is iffy under great conditions, awful under standard (crazy google voice transcripts anyone?), rough use of punctuation, and so on. What DO exist, and they are super useful, are programs that will allow you to pause, repeat, skip around, etc while typing in the conversation, allowing you to go through the whole process without lifting your hands from the keyboard, a major time saver when you're dealing with multiple hour conversations. There are even free web apps available (I haven't used the one linked, but it looks decent). For serious transcription work, software based around foot pedals is available to offload the repetitive tasks from your hands, speeding up the process even more! (Oh God I hope I never get to the point where I'm transcribing enough interviews to be searching for foot pedals. It's drudgery.) So yeah, huge thanks for doing this, triverse, sounds like it was a ton of work. -

Good lord, nice novella. Hope you at least had some decent transcription helper software to keep the constant pause/play/type from driving you batty. Thanks for doing this, looking forward to the interview. -
Great to hear! I'd be in for a couple of the Seagull 78s as well.

Questions about the Neo Geo MVS "multicart"
driph replied to rhindlethereddragon's topic in Classic Console Discussion
One of these days, someone will hopefully release an MVS flashcart. Would be nice to flip through all my titles on the cabinet without having to sort through all the garbage hacks that're always added to the multicarts simply to fill out the number count. -

That's unfortunate, they otherwise look like they might be great. What 7800 controller do you use or recommend?

XE Game Machine Super Video and S-Video Upgrade
driph replied to puppetmark's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I use a composite/s-video to HDMI convertor for retro gaming on modern tvs (it works surprisingly well), so I'm definitely leaning towards going with s-video support. Using a hacked s-video cable with the 800/130XE (via the monitor port) makes a huge difference, Star Raiders has never looked better, and it'd be fun to keep the XEGS out as my go-to machine for 8-bit gaming. Once I get a few other projects out of the way, I'll take on this mod. Thanks again! -
XE Game Machine Super Video and S-Video Upgrade
driph replied to puppetmark's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
*rise from your grave* Heya puppetmark, just wanted to say thanks for putting this together, I recently got an XEGS and am researching video possibilities, and I love the thoroughness of your walkthrough. Is s-video still the way to go with the XEGS, or would installing a monitor port be better (and then running s-video through that if needed) overall? -
Same! Just got the cart a couple weeks ago, looking forward to digging into the game.

Ninja Golf would be a lot of fun to bring back in some form. If anyone decides to do something with it, please hit me up when you put together the design team. :] I still need to get myself a cart of the game, all I see lately are boxed copies and they go for a bit.
