  1. Not really. For Trashmania: Classic, I just took the original batari Basic source code and converted it into UnityScript, changed a few lines to accomodate for Unity's sprite system, audio, etc. I wrote that game when I was 13-14, so the code was very simple and mostly consisted of if-then statements. I began doing the same for Trashmania: Remix, but that game's code is so convoluted (jumps all over the place, littered with inline assembly, etc.) that I gave up and decided to re-write it from scratch whilst still maintaining very close accuracy to the original.

  4. Gee, been awhile since I've logged into this place! Guess I should show you guys a little something that I've been working on over the past few months: Trashmania: After Dark (you'll need to install the Unity Web Player Plug-In). There's also a version for the OUYA which is on that system's marketplace right now. I figured you guys would be mildly interested in seeing this since it's based on two Atari 2600 homebrew games I made a few years ago, Trashmania and Trashmania: Remix. I know some people here liked them at the time (Remix in particular). I'd hate to say I've "moved on" from making Atari 2600 homebrews, but I guess that's sorta what happened after making TM:Remix. My ideas got very artsy, ambitious and just beyond what the hardware was capable of. I'd love to go back and make another homebrew game someday, though! Until then, I hope you all enjoy this current project on mine. It's still being updated, and more stages+features are planned for future updates. Have fun!

  6. Got this game on launch day, and instantly fell in love as soon as I started playing it. By the time I beat the final boss(es), the final flagpole appearing, and the credits beginning to roll (with that incredible music)... I came out of the experience completely shaken up... but in a good/happy way. It was the first time in years I had a feeling quite like it, let alone from a video game. The folks at Nintendo EAD know what their doing almost too well. As a game developer myself, it leaves me stunned and without words. Every time I got stuck on a level, I didn't cry out in anger like so many games have done, but rather I was like "Oh no! No! That did NOT just happen!" in a laughing/joking manner with each moment I lost a life... and I kept going. Every level was different enough to where I kept wanting to see what would come next. The artwork is gorgeous and full of vibrance and color, the soundtrack fits Mario so well, and the gameplay and level design are simply perfect. Aside from a couple of times I made bad jumps due to bad depth perception (I kinda wish I could play this game in 3D, as that helped a lot in 3D Land), I have no complaints about anything. 10/10. Would play again.

  8. Yeah, this is just a cheapie kiddie version of the 3DS. I'm sure Ninty made this thing partly as a response to more and more kids getting tablets to play games on, and $130 is a very good price when compared to all those android tablets aimed at that age range.
  9. We currently aren't planning to release it on other platforms, at least not in the near future. We don't want to shoehorn the game onto a button-less mobile phone or tablet, and porting the game over to the Wii U, PS4, etc. is still out of our reach for now (the porting job itself will be easy since we made the game in Unity3D, but licensing costs and such are still high). From their official site: "Unity Free, which include the free platform add-on products, may not be licensed or used by a commercial entity with annual gross revenues (based on prior fiscal year) in excess of US$100,000, or by an educational, academic, non-profit or government entity with a total annual budget for the entire entity (based on prior fiscal year) in excess of US$100,000." That might be awhile, though.
  11. Of course! Both the free and paid versions will work offline! An internet connection is required to initially purchase the full game, but after that one-time purchase you won't need an internet connection at anytime. It's gone great! Some minor set up quirks to get it working on the OUYA (mostly if you'll be doing in-app purchases), but I have little to no complaints with anything about Unity. I haven't heard anything negative about the artwork; most of the comments I've gotten have been "it looks pretty good!" or "it reminds me of when I drew stuff in middle school" (in a good way).

  15. I haven't had this issue on my end. When we were running our game's booth at SGC, we had this set up: Controller 1 - OUYA Bluetooth Controller Controller 2 - GameStop PC USB Controller Controller 3 - Saitek USB Controller Controller 4 - Xbox 360 USB Controller But yeah, each of those controllers had slightly different input layouts, and it's a pain to manage all of that. Luckily most USB controllers handle input the same way, it's just that Controller A may have the bottom face button output as "Joystick Button 0" while Controller B may have it's bottom face button output as "Joystick Button 1", and so on.
  16. I once bought a working Genesis Model 2, two Controllers, all needed cables, and six games for three dollars. That's technically less than $0.50 for each game, or something... Not counting that, all that comes to mind is a few Atari games for $1.99 each, but I'm sure I've spent less than that for a single game at some point...
  17. Wow, a lot of mixed-to-negative reception here. I watched Part 1 and 2 (before I saw this topic) and liked them. I think I like James out of character better (although Board James is pretty good, too), and at least they seemed to do SOME research before making this video. Also bonus points for not completely trashing 2600 Pac-Man and explaining a bit more of the history behind why it "flopped" or whatever. I know they mentioned "Once Upon Atari" in the video, but I still wonder if HSW told some stories to James and the crew whilst working on the AVGN movie. Side note: James has admitted before that .

  19. *shameless plug* Our OUYA-exclusive game Wrecking Balls Arena was met with pretty good reception at SGC 2013. The game even managed to convince a person or two to buy an OUYA just to play it again (!). Here's some footage of the game on a webshow:

  22. There's also the menus for save states, control configurations, and all that. Then the hi-res splash screen, boot music, and the emulator itself (I recall reading somewhere that at least the N64 VC games each came with a version of the emulator tweaked to run better with that particular game, or something. I could be wrong on that, though). The 3DS also has similar quirks when it comes to game storage. 3DS apps and games can only be saved onto an SD card; DSiWare games can be stored on either the SD card or internal memory, but can only be played if they're saved onto the internal memory (just like how the old DSi handled it). While the Wii could run games from both internal memory or an SD card, in order to run a game saved on the SD card, you needed enough internal memory on the system for it to be temporarily moved there and then it would run.
