  1. For this kind of stuff you don't need anything except the usual random number in the 1-255 range that bB gives you. You just need to scale your odds first to fit within 1-255 3/41 odds are very close to 18/255, so instead you can use... "If a random value is 18 out of a possible 255 then change enemy AI tactics" There will still be times when you'll need to scale random numbers, but there's no sense in wasting cycles when you don't need to.
  2. Most of your original list is interchangeable, so far as single button and joystick operation is concerned. Anything more exotic like extra buttons, lightguns, paddles, and keypads do not work when swapped. I don't own a famicon, but if the controllers work like an nes then they won't work with any of the other systems on your list.
  3. 3 was a lot of fun the first time around, and I had played 1 and 2 to completion previous to playing it. There were actually a bunch of new engines added for new level types in Crash 3. There are flying, driving, jet ski, and riding the tiger-cub levels, in addition to the usual 2.5D levels. IMO Crash 3 was the pinnacle of Crash.
  4. Everythings working great right now, so I don't think I'm going to bother. I stopped buying stuff from the shop a while back. When my investment in virtual games started to become significant, the DRM issues around it started to bug me. Plus, I agree on your statement about homebrew replacing much of the need for the store. Probably why Nintendo is fighting it so hard.
  5. If you really need to, you can get the store running with: * Waninkoko's 4.3 firmware updater * Wii shop update with WiiSCU or Dop-Shop As always, read the instructions carefully, back up first and assume the risks.
  6. If you have a Wii with a vulnerable boot1 Nintendo can't lock you out of bootmii; you can revert anything updates Nintendo does, providing you have a backup. No need for a second dev system in that case.
  7. Ah, fair enough. I'm in for a pound and not a penny... These days I use a usb loader, which doesn't boot update partitions, and also have my modchip set to do the same. I also have New Super Mario Bros running fine, and that one has a 4.2 update on it as well.
  8. Games don't care about the Wii menu software level, they just have requirements that certain IOS versions are installed. You can manually download any needed IOS versions from Nintendo on your PC and install them on your Wii with a wad manager. This avoids Nintendo's lockdown tricks. I'm running 3.2, and I've played games as recent as Super Mario Galaxy 2.
  9. I'm still on 3.2. Nintendo will have to pry my USBLoader from my cold dead fingers. I load any IOS I need for a new game manually. That way I get the updates without these shenanigans. Those that have Wii's with the vulnerable boot1 should take some time to back up their nand - that's your get out of jail free card.
  10. When someone gives a gift to the community like this, correct attribution of their hard work is a small price to pay. Further, its likely the only reward they'll get for their efforts, other than the satisfaction of the job itself. It may not seem like a big deal to others, but they didn't spend their spare time working on it.
  11. I think that would be fine, Ax, and I'd be interested in B. Actually, if you want to offer a C with one of those el cheapo carts, I'd be interested in that more! I have no spare carts presently.
  12. It has a few flaws, but I think these could be addressed with some small changes: give the lady an uzi. distribute a "hot coffee" patch There are a lot of things that have been brought up in this thread that I'd like to touch on... what is a game? Does it have to be fun? I agree with RT that what some call interactive artwork should be considered games. Fun is a subjective term, and to me "interesting" or "moving" is a fun experience. Is playing against an AI character competition, even if they have different goals than you? i.e. Are you competing against the dragon in Adventure? Competitiveness literally means the drive to go after the same desired thing/resource as others. I think that you are competing against Rhindle when he's guarding the chalice (the resource being the chalice) and even when he's just attacking out of the blue. (your flesh being the resource) Also, I'd like to put forth a "rule" of my own... Originality. if you make the same game that we've all seen 1000 times before you'll bore us all to tears. If you must recreate your favorite game, play a bit of "what if", and change things around, and more than just cosmetically. Add new ways to interact with the game! Mix two games together!
  13. I recently bought some Intellivision consoles and games from shadowdoggie - he had great communication with PMs, he shipped fast, and they were well packaged!
  14. I agree that it's a completely stupid thing to do, especially given the warning on the DVD cover - but I'm a little pissed that manufacturers don't try to build their stuff like tanks anymore. If a console was standing vertical and a pet knocked it slightly off true vertical, I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if the game was scratched. At times the 360's DVD spins at 12x (that's 6840 to 19200 RPMs depending on which part of the disc is being read) and centrifugal force being what it is, that DVD wants to remain completely balanced.
  15. Yup, the blocks in the maze of Passage do change. Not really sure about randomness in Gravitation. If it isn't already there, randomizing the stars would be a trivial change.
  16. Anybody think that Passage or Gravitation follow the rules?
  17. Maybe RT has something here, and maybe he doesn't, but I applaud anyone that tries to do something new. In this case I'll applaud doubly loud, as RT stated reasons include not only the enjoyment of the player, but his/her well being as well. Getting back to the rules, I'm not sure a gaming session can generate the kind of prolonged stress that may have adverse health effects. Two of the most stress busting activities I can think of - comedy and sex - rely on a build up of tension followed by a release. I think games require a similar build up of tension to be similarly cathartic.
  18. Sega pads now *kinda* work with the latest Harmony firmware. You just need to hold down the B button as you run the Atari on.
  19. I was genuinely excited by the trailer, but now I'm kinda put off; they've decided to release it in episodes... Source: http://e3.gamespot.com/story/6265560/ubisoft-announces-rayman-origins
  20. Thanks, SekOner! I'm glad you find them as fun as I do. IMO a person hasn't seen the best of those games until they've played them with 2 buttons. And just in case someone is reading about Harmony and Sega pads for the first time: the info in this thread is now old. The latest Harmony firmware now supports the Sega pad - simply hold down button B as you turn the Atari on.
  21. If you want to follow your own rule against competition, I think it should apply to AI characters too. Otherwise the game will appeal to (and reinforce) the competitive nature in the player that you feel is a lie. With that wrinkle aside, the only games I can think of that live up to your ideals are: M.U.L.E. in 1-player mode, and 7 Cities of Gold. I suspect Civilisation type games might qualify too, but I don't play those so I can't say for sure. While I think some of your points are quite good - I keep your randomness rule in my mind often - I think some might best used as guiding principals rather than hard rules. I also get the feeling that good game design is similar to comedy: one can do a thorough analysis on the nature of what makes things funny, but constructing a joke from the rules will lead to something spectacularly unfunny.
  22. Freakin' spectacular! It uses a linebuffer instead of a framebuffer due to the ram constraints, so you build up the display a line at a time, not unlike a 2600! On the downside, that's also going to make this thing very difficult to code for, not unlike a 2600.
  23. The only way this generation will last longer is if the manufacturers and public have truly learned that its not all about graphics and processing power. I'm not convinced that is true. At some point Moores Law makes it possible to produce a new console at the same cost and twice the power. After that its previously been a matter of which manufacturer blinks first. When sales slow down some more, I am expecting to see incremental upgrades to the Wii though, similar to how the DS has gone from original->lite->dsi->wide. My guess is tha new Wii revs will likely have bigger internal flash, motionplus built-in, and improved drm. No guesses on the next-gen Wii2. But if its just incremental upgrades I will be disappointed.
