Nope, but I was able to login to 23 bios tonight with the celebrate password and make changes. Happy happy joy joy ?

Awesome.  I am happy that I was able to sort this out and leave useful tips for the community which is helping out those with newly purchase Atari VCS consoles.  This all tells me that Atari intentionally set a different BIOS password on the Black Walnut consoles.  Hopefully they don't update all consoles at a later date to this new BIOS password that is unknown to the consumer.

Another MicroCenter owner here. I upgraded memory to 16GB DDR 3200 and added a 240GB M2 internal SSD yesterday. I was able to downgrade BIOS to 21 to use celebrate password and increase memory speed, etc., but after reboot BIOS was updated to 23 and now BIOS password does not work. ?

I also tried reinstalling OS/BIOS via USB stick which worked just fine, but during boot up it updated again and password is invalid.

Hmmm, that is odd.  My password remained the celebrate password after being update again to 1.0.23.  Not sure why you would be getting a different one, but maybe it depends on you OS build as to what password gets set on the next BIOS flash.  Did you flash only the BIOS or did you reimage eMMCthe with a fresh copy of the Atari OS?  I did both as I discovery that OS refresh doesn't include the reflash of the BIOS as both are separate process that can be launched.

Ooof, I just returned it last night.  Where's the BIOS flash utility and associated downloads?

Disabling secure boot aside, I guess my second issue would have been having to manually select PC Mode to go into Batocera, as opposed to just having the machine boot up as a Batocera-first machine?

Did you get another Atari VCS and manage to get BIOS access?

Still nobody here has a passw after the "celebrate" one? I searched the other threads but only this one seems current (until now). I wish they let users have control of their own computers, like they said they would.

The "Atar!C3l3br8te$50Ye4r$" password does NOT work for me.

I picked up a VCS 800 with the idea of using it as an upgrade to my Celeron J4125-based Batocera box. I plugged in the VCS and played around with it stock, letting it update and everything. After having my fun with the out-of-the-box experience, I went off to go play with Batocera on it.

I went to boot Batocera via USB, and I was a bit surprised by getting prevented from doing so due to security policy, but figured that was just something I could reconfigure in the BIOS. I hop into the BIOS (now updated to v23) and get password prompted. A little bit of Googling later, I see the "piano" and "celebrate" passwords and have at it. Nothing works. Small case "L", upper case "I" and so on. I used three different keyboards, different USB slots for them, no luck.  I contacted support and they confirmed that the "celebrate" password should work.

Doing some more Googling, apparently I'm not the only one dealing with this, but it appears inconsistent, with some folks being able to get in with the "celebrate" password and others not. I'll be driving back later this week to return this, unless someone has other ideas on how I can get Batocera booted on this thing.  I know I could install Ubuntu and Retropie, but Retropie it is a bit more janky than I'd prefer (it's what I had on my Celeron J4125 box before going with Batocera).

Reflashing the Atari VCS BIOS using the Atari VCS recovery image resolved the issue of the password not being accept for the Black Walnut console hat I purchased from Micro Center

There is a step you have to do that isn't in the guide, and you will need a keyboard for this.  If you don't have a keyboard it will only flash the Atari OS not resolve the issue.

    • You need to use the keyboard and select the flash BIOS.  It downgraded the BIOS from 1.0.23 to 1.0.21
    • You shouldn't need to reimage the Atari OS, but I did that as my first step before the BIOS.  If you find just fleshing the BIOS doesn't work then reimage the Atari OS, power off & then on again and flash the Atari VCS BIOS before the system boots into the Atari OS.  After that boot into the Atari OS and let the system update the BIOS.

I hope this helps anyone else who had the same issue of the BIOS password not being accepted.  The Atari VCS is a really amazing device and is shaping up to be a great console as well as the perfect entertainment PC solution for the living room.

  6. I'm going to buy this game tomorrow and spend time with it this weekend.  This game is shining example of the type of retro content that will be the bread & butter for a console like the Atari VCS (and yes it is a console and not a mini PC as Michael Artz wants to tout it). Game like this are exactly what we need in the Atari VCS store to keep gamers interested in what the Atari VCS has to offer and spend time in the Atari VCS OS mode opposed to booting into PC mode. Good work Atari getting this game out just in time for lead up to the Christmas Holiday season. I am Looking forward to seeing what other gifts Atari has in store for us for the Atari VCS's first Christmas retail season.

Hello all. Just got my VCS setup tonight and have a couple of questions.

    1) Is there any way around having to enter PIN every time you boot & login to the system?

    2) Is there any way around the 32 character limit on the WiFi password? That limit is out of spec and there’s no way I’m gonna change my 50 other WiFi devices to accommodate it.

    Thanks for any assistance.

Yes, under the System menu go to > Account > Edit Account and turn off Require PIN at sign in,

It seems this may have been a bit premature, as a tweet by Atari's team.
    Maybe a social-media mistake.
However, the game is coming to the VCS. Maybe just not today, after all.

I hope that that it is still coming to the Atari VCS, but after 2 weeks of silence since the misstated "available now" status for the game I wonder if somehow the deal didn't fall through.  Also, I asked on the CollectorVision Facebook page in a very respectful manner and the post wasn't up long before it was deleted without any response at all. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but this doesn't exactly instill a lot of confidence that Sydney Hunter is still on it way to the Atari VCS.  Maybe an exact date cannot be given, but a statement form Atari or CollectorVision saying that they game is still coming to the Atari VCS would go a long way towards making a lot of eager Atari VCS owners happy.

I've never heard of this game, but I wasn't into PC gaming in 2014.
As a Windows game, I think it could not be carried forward easily to the VCS.
However, as a concept, it looks interesting, and better than "Alone In The Dark"!

    Teaser Trailer

What a concept like this to build on Atari certainly doesn't need Alone in the Dark

I don't see why not.  Usually the main hurdle to porting a game to Linux from Windows is mostly about what third party software they used.  Like some video codecs and such don't have a Linux equivalent (that's supposedly the only reason Unreal Tournament III was never released).  So depending on if they still had the source code, and weren't using some closed source middleware software, they could quite easily port it and then enhance it for the VCS.  Or... you know do what they're doing with DOSBox and 7800 Emulator and just include Proton as a Windows wrapper.

It would be best to do this

as a remake. The game needs some polish but as a concept of what a modernized version of Haunted House could be I think that this could be made into a successful franchise if done right.

I have Haunted House: Cryptic Graves, though I barely played it because my PC at the time wasn't very good for gaming. The game released in November 2014 and was pulled March 2015, so it was sold for only a few months. I wonder what happened behind the scenes that caused the game to be discontinued to soon.

While I didn't care for the cartoony visuals of the 2010 game, I did like how it served as a sequel to the 2600 original and I really appreciated how they expanded on the lore.

Haunted House: Cryptic Graves has the potential to be reworked into a new game.  I definitely feel that Atari was moving in the right direction visually with the dark atmospheric environment and foreboding tone of the game.  I like the there is a bit of quest in the game to hold me interest and make me think about how to progress through the puzzles,  Maybe turn into a bit more of survival horror game.  There is a lot to work with for title such as Haunted House.

I mean... it's already open source.. But I get what you mean, like being able to just slap software into a virtual C:\ and having at it?

Ha, you could even run GEM under DOS...

Yes, I want to be able to run anything we want in this virtual DOS environment is what I want.  I have tons of old DOS games that I would like to be able to play in it on my TV.  I suspect that is probably going to be locked down so that it only runs content that is purchased from the Atari VCS store.

I suspect the answer is no; this is a back end addition to the OS to run future VCS Store releases like the 7800 emulator is for the new Flashback Fridays releases. I'd love it, though!

Honestly, I am more interested in DOSBox being opened up than the Atari 7800 emulator.

  13. I want to know if DOSBox is going to be open to allow us to run whatever we want in it.  I would like to see Atari open up DOSBox and the 7800 emulator in the Atari OS to allow us to run our own and DOS games and ROM's that we own already. I have ton of old DOS games and it would be really awesome to be able to use the Atari VCS to play them on my TV.  Hopefully these are not just closed emulators that only runs the content that you purchase to add to it.

It would make sense for Atari to go the modern first person survival horror route with Haunted House, but to me the original game felt more like a puzzle adventure game more similar to Adventure. So, to my mind, a third-person view along the lines of Diablo III or Minecraft Dungeons where people work together to escape the Haunted House with more of a modern "Escape Room" style of gameplay would feel closer to the original. Just my opinion/

Agreed, the games needs to go the survival horror route and this game have the basic elements of that already.  Plenty to build on here and I do like what I saw they did so far with the game.

  15. Atari sold off Alone in the Dark, but in my opinion they don't really needed it.  Atari still owns the rights to Haunted House and it is the sort of title that they could expand upon and make into a real franchise of its own.  Atari was on the right track with this game when they made Haunted House: Cryptic Graves in 2014.  I know that the game has technical issues and wasn't well received, but there was a lot of potential there with the that version of the game and was much better than the very cartoony version that they released in 2010. I like the overall look of the graphics and ht dark foreboding tone of the game.  Atari should work on a sequel or remake that resolves the issues with the game had as it is a waste of what was potentially a great game and in my opinion is salvageable and would be well received on the Atari VCS.

I just ordered the $299 Onyx version of the console to strictly boot into Windows as a dedicated Hyperspin/Launchbox emulation gaming machine .  I've been looking to build a mini small form factor pc or purchase a prebuild and I stumbled across this Atari VCS.  I like the look and design of the system and the fact that it's a mini pc.  I could care less about the Atari OS.  My goal with this machine is to boot into Hyperspin for retro console and arcade Mame gaming.

I've researched the internal M.2 SSD, memory upgrades, BIOS password issues, OS booting issues etc., and have a few questions.

    1.  Memory upgrades - I'm confused about which memory upgrade to pull the trigger on.  I've read that the 32GB memory can't run at 3200MHz, so what 32GB memory is the best upgrade for this system?  Should I simply settle for 16GB 3200MHz memory?  If I choose the 32GB option, how many GB should be dedicated for the graphics?  I read somewhere that 12GB was optimal?

    2.  BIOS - Most of the information regarding this system is 6 - 8 months old, so what's the latest status on the BIOS lockdown?

    3.  Windows - What are the current issues with installing Windows 10 to an internal M.2 SSD and have the system boot into windows on startup?

My goal is to complete max out the performance on this system, so your knowledge and input will be greatly appreciated!

P.S. I'll be running this 2TB Hyperspin arcade drive listed below and plan to copy the contents of the drive onto the internal M.2 SSD:

    https://www.romcollector.com/hyperspin-arcade-drive-p-155.html

Yes, the memory can run at 3200 MHz if you access the BIOS and change the DRAM timing.  I have done it on my Atari VCS.

A few safe & useful things I did following the steps in this video I have linked on this reply is as follows (the default setting in the BIOS are based on the stock 8 GB of DD4 2666 MHz memory so these should be adjusted to reflect the specs of the upgraded memory and allocate the additional memory to the GPU to optimize performance).

    -------------------------------------------------

    • Set the memory speed in the BIOS to ensure that clock on that is matches the rated speed for the memory (when I upgraded the memory in my Atari VCS I put in 3200 MHz memory to replace the 2666 MHz stock RAM)
    • Allocated more system RAM as video memory (I increased the allocation to 4 GB since I have 32 GB installed in my Atari VCS and that will be a nice boost in games that use a lot of video memory and this is double the default 2 GB that was based on an Atari VCS with the stock 8 GB of memory).

*One other thing shown in the video was how to change the TDP from 35W to 54W but I did not set this on my Atari VCS since put any undue stress on the system and risk damaging or overheating it (for those who want to do this it is advised to replace the stock thermal pad with Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste to enhance the cooling as this has been show to reduce temperatures on Atari VCS consoles when the owner did just that).

PC Mode (I advise using this method as opposed to the WInToUSB method that Atari instructs as you will not get a Windows 10 license and the max partition size is only have a 127 GB partition.)

The best method is as follows:
    1) Connect a SATA III drive a PC internally (I recommend unplugging and other driver so that the boot loader doesn't get altered)
    2) Boot the Windows 10 installation Media that setup on USB memory stick
    3) Let the pre-install setup process copy files to the drive. As soon as the install restarts the PC turn it off before Windows 10 starts to boot
    4) Disconnect the SATA III SSD from the PC and put it in the USB enclosure
    5) Connect the USB enclose to the Atari VCS and power the Atari VCS on. This will boot from the USB drive and complete the setup process.

As for PC mode issues I high advise that you check out my 2 very detailed topics

I add in regard to usb enclosure make sure you drive uses 1A or less or is powerd.     NVME m.2 for me got slower speed and laptop 2.5" disc...   the lowest powered sata 2.5" got me close to the max USB 3.1 speed with is still slower than sata but fast enough for this little PC

Mine is a powered USB 3.1 enclosure and even my USB 3.0 non power enclosure was getting better speeds until I changed to a high grade USB cable on the powered USB 3.1 enclosure.  This was the best rated enclosure on Newegg with a 5 star rating so it was a bit shocking to find out it was performing so badly and really annoying that I found the manufacture is using shoddy cables that robs the performance.  I built another Atari VCS for my sister with the same model powered USB 3.1 enclosure and had the same issue before swapping the USB cable for a high grade on the same as what I changed to on mine.

  18. I would love to see a Star Raiders game.  It is Atari's biggest classic title that they still own the rights to and they are sitting it and doing nothing with it.  That as an exclusive could be the killer app for the Atari VCS.

Make me a nice modern Star Raiders game that doesn't suck and I will not be able to put down the controller nor want to turn off my Atari VCS.  They should also have a mode where you can play as the Krylons for the campaign.  Also a nice multi play death match match mode would be really cool.

Hell, if I was Atari, I would pay Doug Neubauer a very handsome price to be involved in such a project.  Not sure if he codes modern games, but attaching him to it as a creative consultant alone would be a huge PR win for Atari and great as promotion for the Atari VCS.

My Atari VCS from Best Buy arrived today. I’ve installed Windows, got the VCS Companion app working and played some Vault games. So far I am enjoying it. I really like the controllers. The only complaint I have so far is the fan noise and some of the interface being a little less than intuitive.

I know that the constant fan throttling on the Atari VCS has been a big complaint for many. According to this person "Core Performance Boost" setting seems be be affecting the fan by causing jumps to greater than >80°C and advised "turning it down" (not sure if means turn if off since I have poked around int the BIOS at this time for the setting). Not sure I would want to disable it, but just thought I would shire. Here is an article I found that does some benchmarking on a PC with "Precision Boost" on vs off. Is Precision Boost the same as "Core Performance Boost"?
