  1. First of all, congrats to Al and the current Atari for their new partnership as far as the homebrew store is concerned.  The availablity of homebrew games as both physical AA carts and downloadable titles on the VCS can be beneficial for current 2600 programers.

But if on the forums there's going to be connection between the old and new Atari communities, then it's time to stop the constant ageist gatekeeping that goes on here because I'm real sick and tired of feeling like an outsider just because I don't have a working 40+ year old hardware for playing flash carts and homebrews that use ARM co-processors.  I don't need to prove to anyone how long I've been a "real Atari fan" nor do I need the valadation from any online retrogaming community who always measures by the amount of plastic carts sitting on backshelves.

I get it, the previous administrations that ran Atari before did crappy things...boo hoo get over it.  At least the current version is still making games, supporting the VCS and even making physical carts that run on 2600 consoels (both old & new).  You don't like the new Atari stuff then don't buy it...but that doesn't give anyone here the right to crap on anyone who wants to enjoy old classics on modern devices.

They're trying to do right but all you people ever do is spit in their faces just like you drive newcomers away.  So unless things change here, I can't see how AA can continue to be a community for all Atari fans.

So good bye & good luck to all you guys, hope you actually get along....

  2. I don't care about emulation, SD flash carts or ARM-based homebrews....

I need something to play my existing Atari carts on my flatscreen with working joysticks & paddles.

Plus it compliments my existing Flashback by swapping power and HDMI cables.

Maybe I will preorder it, especially since it'll be shipped in time for my birthday.

Maybe if AtariAge can create a FPGA based 7800 that's better than the 2600+ for playing homebrews, then you can convince me to hold off...

  3. For me the issue is not with nostalgia but practicallity...

I do not have the room in my small house for a large game collection.

I do not have the money for collecting because of things called "bills".

I cannot find any working 40+ year old consoles from retro game stores that are more interested in selling Nintendo/Sega games collectibles.

I am not a big time YouTuber who makes money by doing silly faces in thumbnail pics.

And it's just easier for me to keep all my games, from retro to Triple A, on a single PC machine.

Anyone who can use real hardware for that authentic classic gaming experience, then God bless you.  I used to be able to do that back in the 90's but it's just not feasible for me right now.

Best I can do right now is to use CRT shaders and arcade style controllers.  Someday i'll be able to use a real CRT display and actual controllers via USB interfaces but until then I make do with a modern gamepad that I've spent more years recently using then the Atari joysticks I've used in my youth...

  4. If you're used to using MESSUI, then you can now run MAME straight up w/o any front end or command line (though they are still useful).

Just run MAME and type in the name of the system, or arcade game, you wish to run.  You'll then get a list of choices based on what you typed in that you can now select from.

Of course you should still have the full BIOS and Software List ROMS included with the matching version of MAME...

  5. IMHO, Atari should just license a PC OEM company to make & sell Atari branded mini PCs with Ryzen chips.  It's just easier to slap a Fuji logo and woodgrain on an existing design then to waste money doing custom cases & motherboards.  That way there would be more to ship out and sell through Amazon or whatever.  (Still include Atari OS but maybe add an option for an additional SSD with Windows or Ubuntu).

Since currently Atari has better luck with licesencing than actual manufacturing, just go with that instead...

How do you "purist" feel about adapters like this or not using the OEM controllers?

I don't know about stuck up purists but I would rather have a playable controller than one that doesn't work due to being worn out and/or badly designed.

And yes there were 2600 joystick adapters/keypads back in the old days called Masterplay Interfaces...

    Lawyers.

Atari owns the I.P. for Bentley Bear and it was used in this game without permission from Atari.  So in order for Atari to make everything legal, lawyers.  I don't know what the exact details would be, but since Atari owns the I.P. but not the work, they would have to come to some sort of mutual agreement or settlement about the release.

The same arguement could apply to Failsafe which is pretty much Counterstrike(c) II.

But at least this version of Atari, unlike the last one, was willing to work with homebrew devs instead of sending the usual C&D letter.

Of course I don't know (nor want to) know the overall legal process but it must be possible with Failsafe already released by Atari themselves.

But also would like to echo that Atari should license Bentley Bears Crystal Quest and distribute it on the VCS asap

If Atari could put Failsafe on the VCS, from the same developer, then why not?

  9. Thanks for the hlsl settings, the game (and everything else) looks better.

Sadly, A7800/MAME doesn't save the video settings so here's what you need in the a7800.ini file:

    #
    # BGFX POST-PROCESSING OPTIONS
    #

    (All other settings)

    bgfx_screen_chains hlsl

And the hlsl.json file in the bgfx/chains folder should have these lines after the comments:

{ "type": "intenum", "name": "adjustments", "text": "Enable Adjustments", "default": 1, "max": 1, "min": 0, "step": 1, "format": "%s", "screen": "any", "strings": [ "Off", "On" ] },

{ "type": "intenum", "name": "ntsc", "text": "Enable NTSC", "default": 1, "max": 1, "min": 0, "step": 1, "format": "%s", "screen": "any", "strings": [ "Off", "On" ] },

Though the NTSC settings "should" be On by default...

They suspended their manufacturing contracts for the current VCS (I've heard they have enough stock to last for a while), so none of this tracks with what we know.  My understanding is the VCS was the brainchild of the previous administration, and the whole campaign/launch was a fiasco for a product that does not appear to be a rousing success.  Can't imagine the current regime would be up for Round 2 given they've already built up ill will for the name with it.

True, especially since hardware division lost the company so much money.

OTOH however...they still make games for the VCS so I doubt they wouldn't have some kind of replacement once the existing VCS stocks run out.  Unless they plan on pulling a Sega (3rd party only), but who can really say?
