  1. I guess if you are talking about those video artifacts, there's no way I could tell that was an Atari being used for that...
  2. I didn't see the Atari in the Devo video?
  3. Saw Ghostbusters: Afterlife...was pleasantly surprised by the good natured film and it was soooo much better than that "reboot" a few years back.

  4. Who here has been to Galloping Ghost up in Illinois?

Been there, LOVED it, literally bought the t-shirt :)

As to the games on their list, for the most part, yes absolutely.  The place is PACKED with arcade machines side to side.  Like, there was almost nowhere for my GF to sit and read while I played games for 8 hours there one day (she ended up having an attendant find her a out of order sit-down Sega Star Wars machine to sit at lol).  I would say less than 5% of their machines were out of order, they keep them in great shape.

Despite the size it was a little crowded and packed in. Zero space between machines and nowhere to take a break and decompress. It's alright if you like that kind of thing.

Yes, most were completely playable, a couple with a few issues like messed up screen colors, etc.

The near unobtanium working Star Rider had graphical glitches, but again, just the fact that it was running is probably a modern miracle.  I probably choked up a bit while playing it since I hadn't seen one in over 30 years, and it was a favorite back in the day.

I probably spent just as much time walking around and finding everything as I did playing games.  Every row you'd see an old favorite, or something you've completely forgotten about.

  5. Saw the new Dune with my wife and son on Saturday.  Already seen first film multiple times and familiar with the source material so nothing surprising.  Enjoyed it but it was a little too slow moving.

I thought it was really well done. I read Dune for the first time about 3 years ago, so while it was all familiar I didn't remember a lot of what happened.  I enjoyed it.

I really liked it too,  but broke it up into 3 segments...Watched at home despite it being a big (theater style) movie.  While I've never read the book,  this version made total sense unlike that confusing snoozefest from David Lynch I slept through in the theater in the 80s...

@GoldLeader , agreed. The only thing that the 80's movie did better was the space guild scenes, but the explanation about why they needed the spice was MUCH better in this new movie than the non-existent explanation in the 80's movie that relied on book knowledge.

  6. Pipe Camp! Pipe Camp! Thank you, Lord, for Pipe Camp!

  7. Had my 400 playing some Atari 8 bit Halloween music on the porch, while the adults in our cul-de-sac manned a fire pit and flasks of whatever for warmth.

  8. Sorry..I JUST saw this response....or perhaps I saw it and messaged you long ago and forgot. I'm getting to that age Your memory is spot on. The Computer Room was THE Atari resource in the KC metro area. You could go to the Radio Shack/Tandy stores, or Toys R Us, or Sears or whatever and see C-64, some Atari, and some PC stuff...but The Computer Room was ALL Atari all the time and the local Atari computing community really seemed to build around it. There was also a place at Oak Park Mall over here in OP called Video Concepts. It was a national(or at the very least KS/MO/regional chain) that we bought our Atari 400 from in 1979 and got various Atari things at before then. When my dad got us the 800XL in 83, we had been to The Computer Room a few times. He found out about it from a guy he worked with who was REALLY into Atari computers..had like every peripheral and all. Interestingly, the dude was insane! and an alcoholic to boot. When the guy offered to copy and entire briefcase full of games/programs for us, when we went to pick it up, he was living in a disheveled home and sleeping on a couch in the basement and there was foil everywhere and he told us how the government was beaming a radio signal to his fillings in his teeth and he was trying to block it. I thought we were going to die in that basement, honestly...LOL. I always felt sorry for him as my dad told me he got divorced and was having problems, clearly. Even when I didn't have money to buy things I'd spend some weekend afternoons hanging out at The Computer Room because you could learn so much from Larry and his right hand man(forgot his name) and from all the regulars who would come in. Did you grow up in Raytown? I had a few friends from Soccer over that way. We are probably about the same age, I graduated from high school in '89 over here in OP. Sorry took so long for me to notice/respond to this...but enjoy the conversation and wondering what gear you have and what you are doing with your machines?
  9. I think if all you've known is Halo, Call of Duty, Red Dead redemption, Battlefield series, etc...it's pretty hard to take interest in an old 8 bit game. It's just underwhelming for them and there's no nostalgic attachment for them.
  10. I guess at that age(32) he's at a bit of an in between age. By the time He was a kid, modern PC's with much more games/computing power were available, so he didn't grow up on the 8 bits, and a little too old to be part of the younger crowd that has seemed to get into retro computing.
  11. Cool. I was just graduating high school in 89 and my kids have zero interest in retro computing stuff. They've played a few games with me on my 400 and 800xl computers..but nothing ever stuck.
  12. I've finally gotten my "Tony Stark" basement room done and I'm ready to start putting some home automation control down there. Can't decide whether to press my 400 or 800XL into service for that role.

@Master Phruby My basement has a drive in bay, but the ramp doesn't drive down internally like Stark's house...

If you're gonna use an Atari 8-bit for X10 networking, then you'll need 48K memory and a 850 serial interface.

Here's something that was in Antic you can use...  https://www.atarimagazines.com/v7n4/bsrk.html

Nice thing about X10 modules is you can use the old command modules with the current ones and incorporate them with "modern" smart home systems using Insteon.

      Thanks for that!

I was actually thinking about using Fujinet and making a wifi enabled app to manage things...

but on that note the 800xl has the standard 64K, and my 400 is upgraded to 48k.

  13. Back in the day, was there ever a game that was glitched out and malfunctioning at the arcade more than Mach 3?

    1. Keatah

      Keatah

Not likely..unless you want to count the routine failures on cabinets because of aging.

  14. At the end of time, a moment will come when just one man remains. Then the moment will pass. Man will be gone. There will be nothing to show that we were ever here … but stardust. The last man, alone with God. Am I that man?

  15. Yes..that's my point. Everybody does indeed remember the C64 and remembers certain games arcade/home pc or otherwise. Comparatively, almost none of those "everybody" votes on sites like Atarimania...hence a disparity between what our community feels was underrated and what was truly underrated.
  16. I heard that Albert devoured his soul in some sort of bizarre scanners type battle.
  17. We didn't either..there are loads of ST users here as well...but as a percentage of the total population? Minuscule in both the US and Europe...
  18. Not to mention that of every friend and school mate that had a PC at home and played games back then, not a single one of us but me is on sites like Atarimania, Atariage, or is even remotely interested in the retro computers we had. That affects the difference between what was popular/appreciated back then by the gaming public and what people on very narrow community sites like Atarimania think about a game.
  19. That sounds interesting and a project I'd like to work on. First thing we'd needed is an actual completely exhaustive database.
  20. Was this under rated? I had it and from my recollection, this and the other Access games in the Beach Head series were pretty much blockbusters...
  21. Yes, "Did you know?" ...I DID know that!

  22. M Network. Overall I think Imagic had a murderer's row of hits, but I was really into sports games and you couldn't beat M-Network for those.
  23. Atari 800 Fun With Art (with Koala Pad) not sure if this counts as 2nd generation(probably not) but Degas Elite for the ST by Tom Hudson was absolutely earth shattering for the time.
