After Windows 10 October update: "Hey! You know that search bar you deliberately turned off in the task bar? Well, it's so fucking awesome that we turned it back on for you, and we're going to put random trending search results in your Start menu! Rejoice!"
I cannot "NOPE" hard enough.

I only use Windows where I absolutely have to, and in all other places I use Linux, with the rare time that I need macOS, I have that around too (though I really hate Finder).
Windows is bad from a user point of view for crap like what you mention. macOS is shit because they kill compatibility randomly, and did things like obsolete all of your 32bit library in one fell swoop...
-
@leech One of my friends is a Classic Mac collector and fan. Killing compatibility upon OSX 10.4 is what turned him away from Apple.
-
@SlidellMan Yeah, I wasn't an Apple fan back then, but do have some retro systems. The first thing they did with the last PPC supported release (10.4.11?) was that they removed the classic mac mode thing, and just kept it as an emulation thing you could install outside of it... Should have been the first sign of nonsense.
When I got a mac from work, I started using a program called Flavour for theming, and then one of the OS upgrades completely broke it, then Flavour2 was promised for a long time. By the time I realized it'd been released, my OS was upgraded again to completely break it and the author gave up on it. Guess Apple didn't want people to be able to do theming at all...

Does replacing old Atari 2600 cartridge labels with new, quality reproductions substantially alter any value they have? Bear in mind I am not banking on my 250-some carts for my retirement, I just want them to look nice.

Agree with others, from a collector standpoint, if its a rare expensive game, I think sticking on replacement labels could even devalue it compared to leaving the ripped or missing original labels. On the other hand, if its like a $5 game, then I don't think replacing the label will impact the $5 people will pay for it one way or the other.

Well, that happened... on a business trip and my car (I am the business, so my car,) was stolen from my hotel parking lot. Beware the "safety features" of your car which keep doors from locking. They can be your undoing.

So it hit me, my old Android 7 tablet is in the car running Wiggle, and it is still showing up in my data usage. I thought to myself, HEY! Google tracks everything, so how do I do it? I go to the find my device page and guess what: my account has been deleted. Even though Google Play on that tablet is not only logged in, the account has (had) a few bucks on it, and it still gives (gave) me pop-ups to set my birth date. So, yeah, Google told me to get fucked, my account was dormant for too long.

@OLD CS1 I had wondered. The only Sun computer I've seen in person was an old SpacStation which looked a lot like a beige pizza box.
-
@ventrra Yup. I have seen and used many of those, myself. Rather un-stylish I still have a SparcStation 20 sitting around here, and an IPX. Funny little machines.

In from July to August, according to BLS, Americans not participating in the labor force climbed from 89,957,000 to 90,473,000, pushing past 90,000,000 for the first time, with a one month increase of 516,000. In September, it climbed again to 90,609,000, an increase of 136,000 during the month. In January 2009, when President Barack Obama took office, there were 80,507,000 Americans not in the labor force. Thus, the number of Americans not in the labor force has increased by 10,102,000 dur...

The sad thing that too many stalwart Republicans, particularly those in charge of the party and their advisers, refuse to admit is that it was Bush and his Republican hoard who not only set the foundation for the Democrats (starting with the take-over in 2006) and Obama, but also gave birth to the Tea Party. We have paid for far too much bullshit during the 2000s up to present -- hence, Taxed Enough Already (T.E.A.) Irrespective on your views of social welfare or national defense, the botto...

@Atarifever: When the president has two-thirds of the government in his party, he becomes the leader of the government. The leader of any club, be it political party or sports team, sets the tone of execution entirely. Unfortunately, we have come to a point in our politics where party is first. And that sounds eerily similar to regimes of the past. BOTH parties demonstrate this: starting backward from the recent Florida congressional race in which the NRCC threatened to pull support of Da...
-
@Hatta: Third party only ensures that the rabble gains and maintains control, because at heart, Conservative and Libertarians have much in common and should band together. Not a third party, but a truly revitalized Republican Party which, at one time in its history, stood for our beliefs. Splintered and fragmented parties now are akin to disjoint and small groups of revolutionaries fighting to retake a country from dictatorship: the smaller and more disjoint they are, the easier they are to...

Thanks to Windows 10, a computer's sole purpose for existence is to update itself.

Don't worry, Canada. We'll take care of the Cup for another year.

Am I the only one bothered by how "classic" or "retro" computers and systems, which you can get your hands on today, are spoken of in the past tense?

I'm not sure why, but I'm reminded of an interview I once saw with a young game designer who wished he could "play video games with a real joystick, just to see what that was like." I wanted to say, "You know, you can still do that ..." It's as if he was wishing for the experience of riding a horse-driven Hansom cab in nineteenth-century London.

I'm on plane... 36,000 feet above New Mexico with yet another half-hour to go. And the second flight doesn't have Internet, so I might actually get a nap or have to *gasp* read something.

@Osgeld: Yeah, I am not a big pop-culture fiend. You might say I live under a rock since I do not watch TV or listen to the radio, nor participate in social media. Plus, when I came up with that today at the office I decided to run it through a Google search to make sure someone else had no claim it, and lo! Seven months (apparently) and no one had posted anything that Google picked up. Well, since Google knows all and sees all, I assumed it is a fairly original way to describe trying...

Support "Right to Repair."

As someone who uses "retro" or "classic" computer platforms and has been using the same Sony Ericsson phone since 2009, I am fully supportive of my ability, both permissive and practically, to repair my own and others' equipment. That should not be taken away from us for these ridiculous and nebulous claims, especially by companies under the guise of "protecting their intellectual property."
-
@OLD CS1: exactly.
Incidentally, for anyone else reading this: the reason why both my wife and I feel as strongly as we do about right to repair has a lot of reasons behind it, but the big one involves John Deere requiring one of their techs to go on-site with a tractor or other agricultural machine after certain parts have been replaced and reactivate it in the field (no pun intended).
Here's the problem: no tech, no start. Or, the machine will start, but won't perform the functions it was designed for beyond 'drive it to where the tech will look at it' - or it'll be hobbled in some other way that makes it Not Useful or Usable.
This is utter bullshit, because John Deere is now screwing with the food supply. Everything they're doing to farmers aside (and, believe me, I am not saying that to be dismissive of what they're doing to farmers; but I do want to concentrate on this one giant core issue that affects anyone who eats), the food on your table may not be able to get there if they can't get a tech out in time.
Apologies for reposting this link, but please check it out. It's not just a code repository; it provides a decent synopsis of the problem as well as external references that go into better depth than I can here.
