  1.

I hope I'm considered one of the disrespectful, younger generation. ;)

No, you're good. You're an honorable individual, kudos to you. :)

It's really only 2 specific individuals that have exhibited the behavior I described.

They know who they are. ;)

EDIT: Revelation - seems like there's 2 of them in every group. I wonder if that's a requirement of having a group? The old Yahoo group had Eric and Erik. ;)

  2.

I'm guessing this is for Midi-out only? Is there a way to do Midi-in (and use the TI's sound chip as a synthesizer)?

Yes, Midi-out only. There is another configuration for the Midi-in cable which includes a resistor and I don't have any longer so I can't describe it better than that.

The Midi-in function is for recording what you play on the keyboard and dumping it in SNF format for editing or recompiling into image files. I believe Bruce's program for that was called "Midi Play In".

  3. The Asgard version was the one Mike Maksimik did--before Bruce Harrison got his mitts onto it (and IIRC, added support for the SAMS card to it, among all of his other tweaks and improvements).

The disks I purchased from Cecure are the original version by Mike Maksimik.

I got the Bruce Harrison version from him at a Lima Fair. They had handwritten labels, I may still be able to find them.

  4. Thank you sir!

I don't think you would need to build a disk because the latest upload of Asgard stuff included midimaster disks.

thanks go to Ralf for that one.

    -Ralph.

I wasn't aware that Asgard had anything to do with the software.

I purchased it from Cecure, and I just found my original disks.

Are they Bruce Harrison's disks? His version had a lot of improvements.

Midi Album is the best of them, it requires a Supercart or comparable (I wrote a program to autoload it in to the HSGPL). It allows you to select a playlist and listen to hours of TI Midi stuff (you probably need a hard drive for hours of music, though).

  5. The Rave99 speech card essentially places the speech synthesizer inside the PEB, thus eliminating the need for the standard external synth and saving space. With XB2.7, speech only works when I have the external synth connected. If I replace it with the Rave99 speech card, all I get is random squeaks...

Sounds like you've certainly got something wacky going on there. The cart was partly developed and tested on my 'stock' system, which includes a Rave speech card. Never had any problems with it.

  6. Looks very intriguing. Can 9958's still be sourced somewhere??? Not that I have any skills nor time but I figured it was as rare as hen's teeth and never even bothered investigating any further.

Slightly off-topic... I know this has been brought up before and it's not mean to fan the flame but, damn I wish I had a F18A type replacement for the Geneve. Trying to hook the Geneve up to a 21st century monitor is a real bitch! I've got a solution but it ain't pretty (no pun intended - it really isn't pretty).

    Thanks for sharing regardless!

The most acceptable solution we've found so far is the Samsung 910MP.

According to the description on Stuart's page linked to above, there are 4 pullup resistors to 5v.

I have these installed and connected to the +5v source. Per the description, one side of the

resistor is connected to +5v and the other side to the indicated pin, correct?

I haven't tried a different card because I'm not sure if they would be compatible with the cable.

The cable is designed to be used with a TI controller, not all lines are connected. I was hoping

not to damage any of my other cards. Unless, of course, the Insane Multitasker repair service is

prepared to do repairs gratis. ;)

Sounds a similar length to my cable.

So formatting a disk with Disk Manager gives error 38? Is that actually a valid error number? What happens if you try to do a simple SAVE from BASIC to a formatted disk?

Have you tried looking at the contents of one of those formatted disks that threw error 38 in a working system yet? Perhaps with a sector editor or some such? Maybe you can find something that points you in the right direction. Error 38 would seem to indicate some unknown error while reading, so it might be that the disk actually does get formatted but something goes wrong during the validation step (if that even exists)?

Interesting results from these 2 tests.

Attempting to save a Basic program results in an I/O error 66.

Looking at the disk where the format process failed, sector 0 has been written correctly. However, sector 1 is not zeroed out as would normally be the case.

How are you powering the FDC card? Are the voltage regulators still fitted? If yes, might be worth removing them and feeding the regulated power directly to the card, see if that makes a difference (triple-check the power connections before switching on without the regulators!). Have you got a 5 1/4" drive you can test with? [Clutching at straws here!]

I'm powering it the same way as my PE box. I have a PC supply in there. Both positive rails are connected to +12 v and the negative rail is connected to -12 v.

No regulators have been removed. It's not a procedure I believe in, too many chances for error. Any system I've configured this way for the past 20 years has worked solidly and I'm not changing things up now. If the card works ok in the PE ox it should work ok with the external pc power supply, By the way I've tried several external PC power supplies, all with the same results.

    I've tested with a 5 1/4" drive, no difference.

Ain't too many straws I haven't clutched at!

  10. I don't agree with your assessment of the Atariage TI group. Back in the Compuserve and BBS days, EVERYTHING was positive and exciting. All the interactions I remember were in a positive vein.

I've noticed that the younger generation of TI'ers here has become disrespectful of the long-timers and of each other. Surely you've noticed that being the same approximate age as me. Inconsideration of constructive criticism and pooh-poohing of legitimate suggestions is commonplace now where it was unheard of in the past. I've experienced it firsthand several times here now, but I do have to admit it is limited to a few hard-heads that just have general societal issues.

But yeah, this is a pretty good place. :)

  11. You're testing with the same cable between the FDC and the drive as well? Good solid earths between everything?

    Thanks for chiming in, Stuart.

Yes. I actually tried several drives and cables. All worked in the Pbox, all would read but none would write with the console-to-card cable. This is very perplexing.

  12. Is it just this one card you've tested? Ample power to the controller and drive?

I've got 2 TI FDCs, both do the same thing. 300 watt PC supply, 3.5" floppy drive.

They both work ok in the Pbox with the drive, but get the same error 38 when trying to format or write to the disk when used with the console-to-card cable.

Both read and catalog ok, just won't write.
