  1. Hello community! If you don't remember me, my name is Sonny Rae Tempest. I created a few Atari game poems a while back which I posted on the forum ("Indentures at an Exhibition", "Calm, Mute, Moving", "abbr." (not sure if I posted this last one, though they are all freely available at www.sonnyrae.com)). I just wanted to let you all know that if there are any poets among you, I will be teaching a free online class at UnderAcademy College where we will be composing concrete poetry constrained by the visual aesthetics and input systems of classic video games, Atari included. The course is entitled Famicommunist Poetics, and the course description, as well as admission form and other UnderAcademy College info can be found here: http://underacademycollege.wordpress.com/courses/ Again this is a free course for those interested in poetry, Atari and other such systems. Enrollment is open now but once the class reaches 15 students then enrollment will close for this course. I invite you all to check out the class and other free courses that UnderAcademy has available, and feel free to ask me any questions. I also wrote a little more about this class at my website as posted above, so feel free to check that out for info as well. While you're there, grab my VCS game poems, they're free for the taking, as well as the source code. Thanks all! -SRT
  2. Thanks! For the randomness, I used the standard LSFR routine (searchable in these forums), using a simple timer to help seed the routine. Not reliant upon time between button pushes, a standard cycle timer run-down seemed good enough for this one, though I had to insert a condition into the LSFR routine in the case that a zero was used. -SRT
  3. Hey all, I've created a random poetry generator for the VCS. It's a little abstract, and you'll probably want to read my write-up about it here: http://www.sonnyrae....generative.html to better understand it. I'll attach the .bin here, but the .asm file is available at the above site as well. Enjoy! -SRT Nothing.bin
  4. A powerful word, Prof. Bogost, and I appreciate it very much. Thank you. Also to let everyone know that I've finished my write-up about this game poem, and it is posted on my website here: Calm, Mute Interview. It is not your typical write up. In fact, it is an Interactive Interview created with Inform7. That's right, it's just like Zork, only here you get to explore my house and interview me instead of killing trolls and filling trophy cases. It's a .z5 file so it should play on any decent interpreter. Anyway, thanks for checking it out, I hope some of you get to! -SRT
  5. Atari heavy sixer: 70929H This is the machine that I grew up with, recently rescued from my father's basement along with other goodies. Needs a bit of dusting/polishing, but is still a class act
  6. Having just retrieved some of my older systems from my pop's place, I was pleased to see this tutorial. I have nothing further to add, only thanks for giving my aging systems some hope!
  7. Weed controller, ha! The simulated marijuana experience, that certainly needs to be on somebody's homebrew to-do list StanJr, fellow Loovillian, PM me if you want to check this out firsthand some day.
  8. The game is finished, and available at this forum topic: Calm, Mute, Moving.
  9. It's finished, and I wanted to share it with you all. Following up on my first game poem "Indentures at an Exhibition", "Calm, Mute, Moving" expresses my experience driving through commuter traffic. All the relevant files can be found on my website here, but I have attached the .BIN below for you all to play. This game poem requires the use of a breath-controlled cigarette controller. I have posted the plans on the above-referenced website. It is simpler to build than you may think, but if you just want to try the game without building the controller, the right joystick fire button is what is used to smoke. Also included on the website are the game instructions. You will want to view these quickly to get an overview of how to play. As soon as I am able I will write up a post-mortum of sorts, so keep an eye on my website www.sonnyrae.com if you are interested on keeping up with this. Anyway, thanks all for checking this out, let me know if you have any questions or comments! -SRT Commute.bin
  10. Here is a video with a better demonstration of the controller on the game poem itself: Sorry about the video quality. It's late, dark, and all I have is my phone to record with. -SRT
  11. Hey all, I have finished my second game poem for the VCS as referenced here: Forum Topic More importantly for this topic, I have finished a prototype of the breath-controlled cigarette controller required for this game, and I have a brief video of it here: . As soon as the controller is finished, I will release the game as well as the directions for building the controller. I am hoping to have this finished by the end of the week, but can make no promises. Thanks for checking it out, I'm excited to get this one wrapped up! -SRT
  12. Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you all know that I've started another game poem, second of a triptych, following up on where "Indentures at an Exhibition" left off (which can be found on this thread if you haven't seen it: Indentures at an Exhibition). The game will focus on the experience of driving through rush hour traffic. I am hoping to make this the most maddening Atari experience that I can. Beyond all the rhetoric, however, is the addition of a homemade Atari cigarette controller, which will be used as part of the game experience. It really is a simple device, and as soon as the game is finished and released, the plans for the controller will be freely released as well (very minimal electronic experience required). Here is a screenshot from where I am in development now: Anyway, I'm excited to be underway with this, and I will certainly let you all know when it is finished. -SRT
  13. Cool, so I can't blame it entirely on my ineptitude. Thanks! I'll remember that for next time.
  14. Thank you so much for the kind words! As far as the Eliza interview goes, I decided on that as a last resort. I wanted to write some form of postmortem for the game, and at least give a little personal background for the audience. However, I couldn't find the time nor get myself motivated enough to write a nice, scholarly essay with impressive views on rhetoric or some let-me-conflict-with-this-other-scholar about narrative. After putting this off for a month, I decided to just let Eliza do what she does best and try to sculpt the conversation toward my project and my ego. While it was an original idea in the sense that I came up with it on my own, I'm sure that I'm not the first
  15. Hello everyone, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sonny Rae Tempest, and I have made a game poem for the Atari VCS. Done in machine language, and after many many many months of watching your forums (I can't possibly thank each and every one of you enough), I have finally finished it. Basically it is an expression of my feelings toward my job. You can view all the pertinent details at my website, www.sonnyrae.com if you are interested. I'm attaching the BIN and the ASM (as TXT, wouldn't let me upload .asm for some reason?). The PDF handbook, which you should read to understand the narrative, was too big to upload (2.5 MB), so you can view it here. I hope you all enjoy it at least a little, and once again, thanks everyone! -SRT Indentures at an Exhibition Indentures.bin Indentures.txt
