So it's 2011 and I finally got a Sega Saturn. My nephew ran across it at a yard sale. No cords, no controllers, Nothing! It had the Daytona game inside it though. It's a Model MK-80000A. I decided that since he's 10, he really couldn't do anything with it so I hooked him up. I traded him a Genesis 2 with 2 controllers, 6 games, RF and PS for it. I had 3 Genesis and 2 of them were model 2 so it was a win win for both of us.
Now for the fun part. Checking to see if it works. I had a power cord that fit so that was no problem. To check the A/V outputs, I pulled up the pin outs for it. Then I stripped down some stereo RCA wires, tinned them with some solder (to give them a little more strength), and jammed them into the correct holes. The cool thing is I got to walk my nephew through it this time. Whether or not he retained it is another story This Link has been a GOD SEND for me messing with different A/V outs. I mean, they are all right there on one page! So now I have an image on the TV! It booted to a Language select which I could not get past w/o a controller so I could not test the game I have to get a good feel for it.
I know the thing works. Now I want to know some more about the thing. Obviously there are 2 controller ports on the front. There's a CD tray on the top along with a cartridge slot. I thought at 1st this was to make the console backwards compatible but as it turns out, it for a memory card or something. The back has 3 port and a door. 2 ports are obvious. The AC IN and the A/V Out. The other is labeled Communication Connector. What is this for? A Modem? From what I read, the modem went into the cartridge slot on top of the unit. Inside the door I see two things. One is a slot for a flat battery that is missing. Now I know why it asked me what language I wanted at the beginning. The 3 volt battery keeps power to some of the RAM that holds the language and clock information if I am not misinterpreting the information I have read. Also inside the door I see something that looks like some sort of cartridge slot. Maybe this is for expansion? Or maybe a port that was never used due to the short life of the system? I can't find anything about this one.
So now that I have rambled for a bit, I guess I really have three questions about this unit.
1.) What's the Communication Connector's use?
2.) What's the slot inside the door on the back for?
3.) Am I right about the 3v battery inside the door?
Thanks in advance
