  1. I "know" that I have this information somewhere, and I am sure it is probably here on AtariAge somewhere.........but...I can't find it.  Someone help me out please on who made the ADAM data drives, the differences, and order of manufacture in the scheme of ADAM things.  THANKS

    Hi!

I'm not an Adam person but I thought other Adam folks would appreciate knowing this stuff has been preserved.

The Sinclair Louisville User Group (SLUG) had at least one Adam owner as a member (Shawn Merrick). He wrote a number of articles about the Adam, including about a BBS program he authored, for the newsletter. For a period of time, he was the newsletter's editor (I don't believe he had a Sinclair).

Anyway, here's the link to the issues I've managed to find and archive:

    https://archive.org/details/sinclair-louisville-users-group/

If I find more issues, I'll add them to this collection.

    Best,

    David

THANKS David, I am sure they will get archived for future users when found here.

I'm looking to contact Guy Cousineau, about releasing the TDOS 4.5 source code.

TDOS needs some enhancements to work well with the #FujiNet (such as dynamic reassignment of drive types depending on what is currently in the device slot), and I would rather not have to do a full reverse engineering job.

Jump in her Jim !!!  You have it possibly in the huge archive you made?

I would consider anything without moving parts to be better, so the CF Card setup is indeed the best option.

However, the cool factor of the other options can not be dismissed! ?

Well Jim, I kinda agree with Henry.  When I first got a physical hd for the ADAM, that was quite the deal.  Physical spinning hd is more in line with the original ADAM timeframe when things were just starting to pop on the 3rd party market.

Despite there being better storage solutions i am still in love with physical drives

I think its because i could never afford a hard drive back in the day that i love them so much today

Here are my 3 Adams, each with its own physical hard drive setup

While no one "hd" is maybe better, I do have a variety of hookups.  CF cards, laptop IDE drive, normal IDE drive, MFM drive, Sparq drive, and Zip 100 drive.  All work good, except that the older physical drives (if not booted up frequently) seem to get lazy and won't rev up sometimes unless you give them a bump.

Yeah, I did that first, actually, this thing was Filthy.. even had to use a needle to fix the mangled pins in the adamnet connector,  guess I didn't clean it enough.

Possibly, had an ADAM here in Florida when I got here that didn’t want to work. Found the pins in the phone jack bent.  Might have been something else, as I also disassembled it and cleaned it; but whatever it was it’s working good now.

Thanks. I was hoping that I had just missed something. there was another auction that had shown a power supply with the logic board attached, so I knew that mine didn't have it. (Apparently these were in a warehouse). the ADAM had been stored in a shed, so it's operational condition was dubious at best.. but figured I would just take the risk and see if it worked, oh well maybe another ADAM will show up eventually...

Only suggestion would be to take apart the ADAM, unplug all connections and clean them all, then try again.

Hello. I recently acquired a coleco adam, and given my lack of knowledge on these managed to obtain a new old stock  power supply. these according to the auction came without the printer's logic board, which I somehow didn't believe was necessary to get the ADAM to turn on. but all I can get to happen is a hum from the power supply and no life from the ADAM. is there a possibility that I need the printer's logic board, or is the ADAM dead? Any help would be appreciated....

The ADAM will work with a good power supply as you mentioned.  Because the ps was inside the printer it had the printer logic board attached.  Is is NOT needed to make the ADAM power up.  You either have a dead ADAM or a bad ps - as you surmised.

Wasn't there a particularly high level of expansion RAM needed for PowerPAINT?

Nope, Powerpaint only needs a 64, to access a full page of graphics.  any memory expander needs to bank switch the memory, that is why any expander greater than 64k needs an addressor card in the center slot wired to it.  The signal for use above 64k is not available in the right memory slot.

I have a chance to pick up a boxed expansion module 3 with the second DDP drive installed and a loose roller controller for $235 USD..

Is that a good deal?   Or should i pass on it?

Sounds great IF all works and still a fair deal if a data drive is bad

Borrowed an ADAM for @mozzwald from @rkindig at VCF Midwest.

We tested it before borrowing, the tape drive needed work, but otherwise fine, it booted into smartwriter, printer worked keyboard worked, all good, we got an ADE hat from @hidehoo and called it done for now.

@mozzwald gets it home, and smartwriter comes up, but no response from keyboard, and printer is going clackety clack like crazy.

What could be going on? Video attached, please advise.

Keyboard key is stuck inside the keyboard or shorting out inside and holding the key down.  Unplug the keyboard and turn it on, it should come up with smartwriter and the printer quiet.  Then put a piece of paper in the printer and turn the ADAM on; if you can see the imprint or actual printed letter, that will be you clue as to which key is causing the problem

The drive looks like a stock Coleco item but it has a tag on it that says E and T 1989

The drive IS  stock Coleco ADAM disk drive; this one was modified by Ed Jenkins of E&T in Texas.  Memory escapes me, but Orphanware made their 720k drives one size, E&T made a different size, and MicroInnovations followed Orphanware size I believe.  Only the drive mech was swapped out and a new eprom was inserted in the ADAM controller board to make the 320k, 720k's work.

I leave my Hard Drive Boot DDP in all the time without a problem.  I am not sure how prevalent this problem really was

Agreed. I leave a tape in the drive to boot the hd.  When I use it for a long time, I pop it loose so it doesn't sit in the drive and keep the motors tensioned and therefore getting hot.

Not sure for what they where they say on the pcb (coleco 1984) so they must be from some oficial harware.

NICE pictures Soviet, and very legible for what the chips are; BUT I am not someone to even know what any of them do.  I can read Coleco on it but that is about all I know.  THANKS for the pics, someone will have an idea what it may do.

No Luc, it is about the us postal system being totally screwed up; thank you trump buddy Dejoy and your stupid ways to save money and make the post office self sustaining.

On second thought..............Henry, contact your seller in the US and have them file a lost mail request.  In December I had to do that twice to get a shoebox sized package to get it moving to Ohio and west of Toledo.  When you file a report, someone looks and says "oh shoot, look what we found" and then they move it to the next table for awhile

It's possible there's a labelling problem with the package, like a faulty barcode they're having problems with. What kind of label did you put on the shipping box? I usually put hand-written labels on all the packages I drop off at the post office, as a sort of backup label. As anyone who has received a package from me will attest, I have good handwriting and a good "original" label can help the postal service figure out their own processing errors.

So what do you really think, Jim?

I don't like to speak ill of anyone, but it makes me wonder now. He had all these big plans for ADAM devices, plus he was sure he could fix my Eve Speech Synthesizer which I sent to him. It took forever to get it back - unfixed - he couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. I'm an idiot when it comes to such things, but it only took me a little research and a few back and forths with someone who had built a non-ADAM speech synthesizer using the same speech chip to discover it wasn't the speech chip at all that had gone bad. It was the audio amplifier chip. Unlike the speech chip, these are still readily available, so my SS is fixed now and working.

Joe there have been others who blew in over the years and then just quietly disappeared after telling us the grand things they were going to do.
