I've spent a good chunk of the last two weekends playing the remastered HALO and tonight I realized the original is almost 18 years old (released in November 2001). OMFG ... is HALO "retrogaming" now?!?! ALSO OMFG - I'm almost old as dirt. But nevermind that ... still an amazingly good shooter. The remastered version included in THE MASTER CHIEF COLLECTION looks great too.

OG Halo is one of the few FPS games I've ever finished all the way through. The graphics and control were good, and I really liked some of the levels. Seeing these old games in their original resolution totally looks like retro-gaming to me, even if it has the same bones as modern games. Especially if you're like me and don't care about multiplayer.
Of course, this is true, too.

Maybe I'll Finally, after all these years, try some Halo haha...My friend gave me an XBOX, but I haven't tried it yet. There's games he gave me too, pretty sure I have Halo and Fable and I don't remember without looking...Then I was at a yard sale the other day and bought an XBOX, 2 controllers and more...All for $5! Don't know if it works, but I've cleaned it all up and confidence is high

It's a good game, to be sure, there's nothing wrong with it. It looks good and controls well, and the score is pretty epic. There are definitely fun bits. The plot and characters are rather generic, though, and I didn't find it particularly better than 100 other FPSs. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't the second coming. I played the series through Halo 3, and it felt like it got worse with each iteration. Of course YMMV.

I just got a new gaming keyboard for my PC - a Razer Black Widow Elite. Setting aside the ZOMGIAMAL33TGAMERDOOD! name, it's fantastic. The Razer Green clicky mechanical switches feel and sound fantastic to my OCD-damaged brain. I am tempted to bring it to work and piss off my co-workers at my day job.

I have one of their micro switch Ornata keyboards on my main rig and I friggin' love it. I always labeled "gaming" peripherals like this in the past as overrated, but then I tried it just for grins and now I can't see myself going back. Even their cheaper membrane-based keyboards still feel pretty good (picked up one of those for a spare PC in the living room).

Yeah I’ve spent some time in the last few weeks testing the different models from Razer, Corsair and a couple others at retail. I love that Razer makes a little switch sampler store display with their Green, Yellow and Orange switches you can test before you buy. I also tested the optical/mechanical widget they use in the Huntsman but I didn’t like it quite as well as the Green switches. I also tested a membrane switch model and it was a noticeable step above most membrane keyboards.

Got one of those cheap $35 "858D" hot air stations from eBay today. Holy shit, that thing gets hot fast. Assuming it doesn't die on me the first few times I use it, it'll be great for my needs: preheating boards, shrink tubing, loosening stuck pins after desoldering, etc.

This holder is shown in the eBay ads as pointing down. The handle can just as easily point up but as you can see, I've got a pegboard on the back of my workbench. I really don't like the idea of several hundred degree C air blowing up at it while the heating element cools down. Maybe if I attach some foil or tiles up there? For now, this will do.

I dreamed last night that I had bought a cheap Chinese hot air station off of eBay. How could I ignore such signs and portents? Should be here in a week or 10 days ... #ManifestingMyOwnReality

Another day, another dead DRAM. But the "Deadbin" C64 is alive! Unfortunately it's mute - the 6581 SID appears dead. And those f@#$ers are spendy. Oh well.
-
The saga of my "Deadbin" C64 continues. Replaced the PLA, now jumbled color garbage characters = Progress! Dead Test Cart says replace another DRAM. TO BE CONTINUED ...

Ironic that NYC’s blackout last night comes on the same calendar day as the NYC blackout of 1977. I’m glad they want to commemorate my birthday but I mean ... ?♂️

Bought a second (used) XBox One for my upstairs game room, my "8-bit Attic." Damn - every game I own requires an 8GB - 97GB(!!!) download to install, even if I have a physical disc. Good thing I have an 802.11ac Wifi connection and a fiber internet connection.

Indeed it apparently is for DOOM (2016). The disc-installed content is about 700MB. The network-installed content is about 61GB. Conversely, when I installed FO4 upstairs, the disc-installed content was about 32GB, plus another 8GB of updates and patches from the network. Even with wireless speeds up there of 75 - 160 mbps, all that took awhile. I need to run Cat6 up there someday.

Yeah gone is the days you can buy a game and play without internet connection. Kinda sad really because not everyone wants to sit there and wait for their game to download for an hour before playing. Especially when excited to play or have limited time in the day. I mean i understand for updates and patches considering the complexity of games these days, the need bug fixes ect. However when some companies are only offering basically the key in physical form it sucks. I remember GTA5 on PC being like 6 discs and as annoying as it was atleast you could play singleplayer straight out the box. On the other hand Arma3 was a few hundred MB on the physical disc and another odd 60GB download. Couldn't even start the game without downloading the full 60GB... There is also the issue with consoles having limited HDD space and installing a game requires uninstalling previous software. Reminds me of the old DOS days having a 30MB HDD and only having the space for a few games.

102 degrees F in my driveway this afternoon, with humidity about 60%. Good day for the AC in my car to die. ?

I am *loving* the Forum’s IGNORE TOPIC feature. Emkay’s latest nearly-indecipherable word-salad insult thread slagging the community’s coders is noisy and irritating. Like most of his posts.

@Joe C. Why do you say that?

The Fauxtari TacoBox thread is interesting and all, but it's distracting folks who usually help others with tech problems because we're all too busy ridiculing the TacoBox ...

E3 made it worthwhile to follow for a little while just to see what if anything of substance would be shown. But since it's still just so much vaporware, I'm going to just stop paying any attention again. I've got plenty of real Atari and other vintage hardware to play with. Tomorrow it will desoldering a super-hot DRAM from a dead C64 mobo, socketing it and replacing it.
-
One thing I really like about Jan Beta's YouTube vids is that his workbench is even more cluttered than my own.

Testing out the new forum software's "IGNORE THIS TOPIC" feature. Too much drama in unexpected places.

Took apart a C64 Breadbin today - jebus fuck, what a low-rent piece of hardware. Amazing there's as many of these things still working as there are.

The Commodore machines are shoddy all around, both in the architecture and in the workmanship that went into building them. I still think it's a tragedy that the C64 supplanted the more deserving Atari machines in the marketplace.
(Speaking of the Marketplace, I know someone with a C64 breadbin machine who is looking to sell it for parts, so I'll see if I can get him to list it here on AtariAge.)
-
I've only got the ones I have because the Breadbin is like one my wife had as a kid and she wanted one, and the 64C I found at a Goodwill about 15 years ago and couldn't pass up. It and the matching 1541-II plus PSUs for both were a whopping $9.99 each. They still have Goodwill price stickers on them. ? Anyway, getting the Breadbin working will be an educational experience I'm sure. But yeah, NOT well-made in the slightest.
-
Next on my workbench - a C64 Breadbin. Used to work, PSU failed high & killed it when I pulled it out 2 years ago. Don't know a damn thing about 'em. Should be fun.

Thinking of launching a ?Box™️ console Kickstarter - it’s gonna be huge!

Just got my first real oscilloscope - a Siglent SDS1202X-E. Very glad to add this tool to the diagnostic arsenal.

Just realized a storm took out a pretty good sized chunk of a tree out back, which then took out part of the fence. Damn it.

Sucessfully built OpenHantek on Win10 today - took a day and a half of faffing around tweaking shit manually & editing source files. Same job took 10 minutes yesterday in Linux. *sigh*

Just got a Hakko FR301. TIME TO TAKE APART ALL THE THINGS!
