Vinyl lasts a long time as long as you have a stylus in new-like state. A dull needle will wear a disc in no time!

I knew a guy that ran a route with 78 jukeboxes and one model had a 1 pound tonearm!  The records had to be replaced every week!

I'd recommend playing a brand new LP a few times before making a recording. Most people don't clean them properly (there's a few cleaners which help big time) beforehand on a new pressing, and there's things leftover from the pressing process. Even still, a play or two helps get rid of that crap, then clean it, then record I say. Lot less surface noise, clicks and pops.

Also, check out the Last (brand) products. I use a stylus cleaner, then follow up with their stylus preserver after each side of playing. Last also makes a vinyl preserver that lasts for 200 or so plays before you need to re-treat your LP. I've never worn out an LP since the mid 80's. Even my oldest stuff from then sounds as good as ever.

Even before then, can't say I ever "wore" a record out. Except for the times (pre teens) I was using ultra cheap gear and worn styli, placing coins atop the cartridge to prevent skips. Those LP's are toast... but I got rid of them looooooong ago.   :)
