I'm currently building an oldschool telephone system in my own home. Why? Three reasons, it's a novel way to connect the outbuildings (garage, workshop and orchard well-house) to the house -sort of a highly stylized intercom system, with a phone from a unique era at each end, that should be fun to use. Second, I can use the handful of old telephones I've accumulated in my lifetime and it's nice to have them serving a purpose again. Finally, the kids are going to love this when its finished. 

Telephone simulator boxes are what you want to look for if you want to do this too. They rule.
