  1. Looks like herd immunity is out the window:  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-54696873

    1. BydoEmpire

      BydoEmpire

There are many categories of diseases. With some like measles, chickenpox, etc your body develops lifetime immunity when contracted naturally.  Others, like the flu, don't.  Seems like covid is more like the latter.  On the plus side, there may still be hope for herd immunity over the long-term (as painful as it may be for humanity to eventually get there, and I'm not saying this is a public health strategy, it's a property of nature): "The number of healthcare workers with antibodies remained relatively high, which the researchers suggest may be due to regular exposure to the virus."  We also don't know much about the severity of it with multiple infections, although the flu has been pretty steady over the last 50+ years so that seems unlikely.

    2. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

Herd immunity isn't likely, although annual vaccinations could eventually eradicate it, depending on how quickly immunity is lost and whether the virus has a chance to mutate. Covid appears to be closer to the common cold than flu. We do become immune to the common cold but that immunity is lost over time, which is why we get it again. Flu is different. It's constantly mutating, which is why a new vaccine is developed every year.

  2. Did my back in yesterday trying to take down a trampoline. First F. Got an exam tomorrow. Second F.

  3. Do you know what your children are doing? If not, you might find your HP pen stylus in pieces. 😡

  4. A lot of comedy I watched as a kid doesn't seem that funny today, but just watched Dave Allen clips and nearly choked on my sandwich. That Irish fella was a comic genius.

You know what IS still funny though?

Loved DAVE ALLEN AT LARGE series, nobody tells stories like him!

Allen's show needs to be brought to MeTV if it hasn't already.

  5. The Sci-Fi we used to watch was a bit weird. Watching Space 1999 made me realise that they thought technology would change but didn't think fashion would change. Star Trek was the same.

It was cutting-edge fashion at the time.

(Joke.   Based on earlier Sci fi seeming to objectify women.  Not necessarily a joke about Space 1999 BTW.)

  6. A guy I know passed away a couple of days ago at just 53. He had some health issues. I hadn't seen him for 20 years and that makes it feel kind of weird as, to me, it feels like he was still in his early 30s. A friend said that he hadn't expected to make it to 70.

  7. It's cool to give know-nothing kids a shock. Daughter came in laughing her ass off. She was watching a guy dressed up as a woman being dunked in a river. It was Tony Robinson. She didn't know who it was, so I showed him in Blackadder. Then I asked her if she knew who Hugh Laurie was. Not a clue. So I showed her a clip from Blackadder the Third. Still no clue. I showed her a clip from House. "OH! HIM??!" She had no idea he started out as a comedian and comedy actor. Pfft! Know-nothing kids.

If it makes you feel any better, I don't know who any of those people are, either and I'm not too far from 50.  I don't really follow movies or actors or actresses.

  8. 2020 Officially sucks. RIP EVH. 😲

    1. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

R.I.P.   And can we just agree the news sucks?  Before giving a headline that he has even died,  They have a story called Remembering Eddie Van Halen...I'm like,  What?  Did he die or something?

    2. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

American news seems to suck a little more than it does over here. Eddie Van Halen dead? Let's build it up first so that people watch the news to find out why we're remembering him. It's all sensationalistic BS. Here, it's straight to the point.

  9. Just bought Star Wars Squadrons from EPIC Games Store for under £5. Win-win.

    1. GoldLeader

      Must be a PC thing...

    2. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

It's an EPIC Store thing. I decided to buy from them instead of Steam or Origin. Went to the checkout and discovered I had £20.01 of credit on my account. Some of that was from when the store first opened and they were giving free cash away. I then noticed a £10 voucher I'd forgotten about and that was due to expire 1st Nov.

  10. Series X it is, then. No VR for me. Specs for Star Wars Squadrons in VR mean I'd have to upgrade CPU and GPU. Buggrit.

    1. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

What the? I just hit the recommended specs on the GPU with an RX570. I thought the RX480 in the min specs was faster. So, I'd need a CPU upgrade from my Ryzen 5 2600. Doable.

  11. Decisions. Get a Series X or focus on PC gaming and get a Rift S instead?

Just get whatever plays the 'games' you want to have, even better something that will play the games you already have.

Consoles use the same PC hardware and have the exact type of graphics anyway so it's only fanboism that choose the brand names over anything else...

    4. Zoyous

      Zoyous

I think it'll be a while until we see any exclusives for the Series X that really look like a big leap from the previous gen, so unless you're interested in how it improves performance on backwards-compatible titles (which admittedly is pretty impressive), it might be best to get the PC now and wait a while to get better Series X titles at a possibly lower price in a year or year-and-a-half.

Anything?  How about a modded light sixer if the price is right (NTSC Please)?  I don't eat liver anymore...And I couldn't see myself buying a cornea ("see" myself...Hahaa!  Groan)  Perhaps you should go to the Corn thread with talk of a Cornea...and just say you misread it...

  13. Has anyone else noticed how Leia is a princess despite her adopted parents seemingly not being monarchs? Maybe that's why Lucas introduced "Queen" Amidala to show that royal titles don't mean the same thing in the SW universe.

  14. Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney are in talks to invest £2million in Wrexham FC. 😲

    1. cybercylon

      cybercylon

They have been talking about this on the Grumpy Pundits radio show on Sirius XM. Wonder what their plan is. Apparently this started from an old tweet by someone local?

    2. cybercylon
    3. Tickled_Pink

      Tickled_Pink

@cybercylon I don't think it started from the Tweet. It was probably just a coincidence - then again, why the hell have they chosen Wrexham of all teams? The Tweets were just a couple of girls tweeting to each other about how one girl wished it was Reynolds instead of some 40+ year old male she'd just had to do a nude life drawing of. I've been to the Racecourse a couple of times. Back around 1980 to watch a league match (got the signatures of most players but then lost them) and then a couple of years later to watch an international match with my high school. It's sad how much they've struggled in the past 15 years.

  15. Watching Bill & Ted Face the Music. Waaay better than the trailer suggested it would be.

@Nathan Strum Definitely. Unfortunately, that's what the trailer made us think they'd be like. They were still a little dippy but had managed to develop some wisdom over the years. I thought they'd got the balance really down really well.

I still need to check it out.  I actually met Keanu Reeves once,  well twice actually,  in 3 days when I was in Vegas.  And he was really a nice guy;  The second time, he remembered me from the first time, despite the fact I hadn't said much,  I had only taken a pic of him and my friend.  Not sure why I didn't get a pic haha...Then we talked about the UFC fight we were both at (He was 5 rows in front of me and my friends)...

      Tickled_Pink

Your research skills are on par as usual. Yeah, Wylfa Newydd. The thing is that there was also going to be road improvements as well, which this road desperately needs. There seems to be an accident every few weeks during Autumn and Winter on just a 5 mile stretch of road. Just before it was originally mothballed, there was an article about the new station on the New York Post (I think) website. Now, it's been abandoned altogether.

    4. carlsson

      carlsson

Apparently Hitachi doesn't have that many nuclear projects going on in the world, so it was fairly easy to find. :)

  19. Facemasks to become compulsory in stores and public spaces in Wales from Monday. Oh well. Time to put my ego to one side and wear one, I suppose.

    1. BydoEmpire

On TV there is a local ad here...It says, "It's for NOW, it's not FOREVER".

We had an editorial columnist in the local newspaper say the very same thing; it's only "temporary" legislation.

I wrote to bring his attention to the War Measures Income Tax Act of 1917. The (then) Minister of Finance explicitly stated that it was intended as "temporary" legislation for the duration of the War. (It was made permanent in 1949.) A truly shameful ignorance of history!

Happily elections have not yet been suspended, so the electorate can still show their support (or the absence thereof) for political decisions.

It's really difficult to find any good music created after 2005.

Every single style is worse today than it was in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s:

      - Rock and metal are boring and often too melancholic

      - Pop music is just depressing stuff with auto tune

      - Electronic music is not as fun as it used to be

      - New styles such as trap SUCK

I'm really sorry for the kids that have to suffer this. I hope at least Youtube suggestions are not as bad, but the music suggested to me when I open Youtube in a Private/Incognito Window (as it if was the fist time you ever open the page) is not very promising: Ed Sheenan and Deep House.

    3. Razzie.P

      Razzie.P

Hmm... sounds exactly like the old fogies talking about our music when we were younger.    And the old fogies +1 talking about their music when they were younger.

I imagine this goes back to the caveman days where Ugg the Elder was griping about how "kids these days" bang on hollow logs to make racket, not like the soothing tones of solid rocks that he enjoyed when he was Ugg the Younger.
