Designing my own desk to build from scratch. What could possibly go wrong? #HamFistedDIY
-
A desk is pretty easy to build. I built ours out of 2x4 legs, 1x6's, a nice piece of planed pine for the top, etc.. It looks nice and rustic and was only like $80 in materials. 15 years old and still sturdy as hell. I never did stain it -- just left it natural wood. It was one of the first projects where I used Torx fasteners. I didn't have a 1/4 impact driver back then. I built it using my Craftsman circular saw and my 14.4 volt Craftsman Ni-Cad cordless drill. Today with my Makita lithium tools like my 1/4 impact, drill, saws, etc.; it'd be even easier.

Just designed mine using 3DS Max. Got the idea to do it from an old 8-bit Guy video. Mine's going to be a little like a cubicle but not as enclosed as his was. One corner's going to have the monitor to I'll risk jig sawing a curved corner. Eventually want to get a 49" curved monitor for it. The idea is to have the section at the back like a mini workshop/workstation. So toying with the idea of getting rid of the leg room and putting drawers there instead. I'll be building it out of 18mm MDF. Haven't worked out the price yet but I think it might take 3 sheets, which currently cost £22 each. There's a pretty cheap hardware store down the road. So, total cost may be under £100. For a desk this size, that's probably as much as a third of what a shop bought desk would cost.

Did my back in yesterday trying to take down a trampoline. First F. Got an exam tomorrow. Second F.

Do you know what happens when you drop an Atari 2600 woody down the stairs? Same thing that happens to everything else. ??

Bad words were indeed said. I'd emptied my office to lay a new carpet. It was sat on top of a cupboard on top of the stairs but clumsy wife knocked it off and sent it flying. She didn't tell me. Saw it lying in pieces at the bottom. The mainboard looks okay but the switchboard is snapped and a couple of the switches have come off. Oh well ... to the spares bin it goes. I have two more in the attic, I think.

@Magmavision2000 - A replacement keyboard should hopefully be all you need. You can probably find someone around here who would be willing to sell you one.

Do you know what your children are doing? If not, you might find your HP pen stylus in pieces. ?

Don't normally feel sorry for Germans, but they really need to sort out the rules for the show jumping in the Modern Pentathlon. It's ridiculous that a gold medal chance can be taken away because a horse you've been given refuses to cooperate.

Dropped a laptop down the stairs today. Thankfully it was my 7 year old machine. If it was the new one, I'd be following it with a rope attached.

Dug out my 8-bits out of the attic. Firing them up for the first time in years. Pretty sure I'm missing a couple, though. Let's see which ones still work.

Edge has not only lost its edge, it's lost all my login details for no reason. So now I have to remember passwords again. WHO DO I SUE?

Empire Strikes Back is being shown with a full live orchestra. If only they were closer. Might have taken the bait.

Ending of Clone Wars still playing on my mind. Couldn't work out when the final scene took place. But it's actually pretty obvious.

England 20 Latvia 0 - Not rugby, women's football. Spain have scored 43 times in 5 games without conceding a goal. The gulf in class between teams in the women's game is incredible.

Norway also beat Armenia on the road 10-0 after a fog break yesterday.
Usually that is a sign of a small sport when a few teams win over the rest 15-0 and only when the top 2-3 teams meet there are even games. I'm not sure if it builds the sport.
OTOH England defeat San Marino 10-0 on the men's side just the other week. We all know that San Marino consists of amateur players and is in the bottom rankings so perhaps the same can be said about the differences in women's football. The only anomalies I have spotted is how the Balkan countries tend to under perform - i.e. Croatia, Serbia, even Bosnia would be expected to do better in women's football given how good they are on the men's side but perhaps that will come over time.

English football teams don't want to score 10 goals in a match, otherwise the score'll roll over. Another 9-0.

I do feel sorry for the kid, but it was a wild challenge. I feel worse for him than I did for Gerrard in his last game against United. ? There's only been three 9-0 scorelines in the history of the Premier League. United or Southampton have been involved in all 3. United 9 Ipswich 0 (1995), Southampton 0 Leicester 9 (last season) and now United 9 Southampton 0.

Episode II of Space 1999 watched. Fun to see a young Ian McShane hamming it up.

It was one of my favourite shows as a kid. Landau actually works because he's not really expected to have a tonne of charisma in his character's position. TBH, none of the other characters are really written well. It hasn't aged well but I tried to watch Blake's 7 the other week and that's aged far worse.

@ClassicGMR - I actually had the toy. There were two or three different versions you could buy. I think I had the one with the detachable cargo bay. The Eagle was one of the most interesting sci-fi ship designs for sure.

Facebook is such a depressing place. Today, came across someone who bought an Atlantis II cart for $2 and someone who bought a ZX80 for $8. Why couldn't that be me??

Facebook just told me it's our friend's birthday today. 44. Shame she never got to see it.

Facemasks to become compulsory in stores and public spaces in Wales from Monday. Oh well. Time to put my ego to one side and wear one, I suppose.

On TV there is a local ad here...It says, "It's for NOW, it's not FOREVER".
We had an editorial columnist in the local newspaper say the very same thing; it's only "temporary" legislation.
I wrote to bring his attention to the War Measures Income Tax Act of 1917. The (then) Minister of Finance explicitly stated that it was intended as "temporary" legislation for the duration of the War. (It was made permanent in 1949.) A truly shameful ignorance of history!
Happily elections have not yet been suspended, so the electorate can still show their support (or the absence thereof) for political decisions.

Finally found my true calling at the age of 50. Discovered today that when the wife says something stupid, I make a great impersonation of Kiff.

Finally getting around to building a "games console". Just a Pi, arcade controls and some wood. Haven't enough wood for a full cab so I'll just build everything into the controller and leave a notch for the HDMI cable.

Finally! No idea why it gave me so many problems figuring it out in the past. Remember those flood fills at the start of ST menu disks? Got one working in Unity. ? My life is now complete.

Financial situation is worse than I realised. Time to think of an IndieGoGo project to dig us out of this hole.
