  1. in regard to retro gaming prices eventually declining... that's a tough one. prices have rather steadily increased. kind of like the stock market, you have to wonder, how high will it go and when will it drop? when it drops how far will it drop? will the value recover? Prices could yet double and worst case come back to todays prices. OR they could get nicked pretty bad. or they may never. I personally don't collect on the basis of having my collection appreciate in value. I collect different systems for different reasons but they boil down to either (1) Playing the games (2) Documenting/preserving games that are extremely hard to find information on. So it doesn't really matter to me anyway. IMO older games have a historical characteristic that cannot really be replaced (maybe it's just me trying to justify nostalgia) and a lot of people have collecting habits, with retro games just being a popular thing to collect. I think that's an notable distinction between the stock market and games - people don't necessarily collect games solely for their appreciation in value or quarterly dividends.
  2. it does get annoying, but you can mute skylar or adjust the volume of her voice, so it's not really that big a deal.
  3. look at the images in the AtariAge rarity guide. If the boxes / carts look like those it's probably a first print from the 90's (or at least using the same packaging from the initial print run). Many of the reprints have small changes in the packaging or label variations for the cartridges. All of the late telegames releases from songbird are probably reprints.
  4. I was thinking the same thing The jaguar has quite an assortment of 3D and pseudo-3D engines from flat shading, Goraud shading, texture mapped, voxel and raycasting. Some of the engines are actually quite decent... imo it's often the game that's the issue (i.e. lack of talent among the modelers and designers and/or lack of budget for resources). The Jaguar can't do the kind of 3D that a lot of people expect when they look at the PSX as 32-bit then at the Jaguar as 64-bit and assume the Jaguar has to be comparable. But it could do some pretty impressive stuff for its time and they could've put a few decent 3D games on it given the proper project management that could've changes peoples opinion about the 3D capabilities of the system. as-is there's a bad combination of 3D not meeting expectations and mishandling of the engines that had potential to facilitate better games.
  5. I agree, just saying that what they have shown looks like it could run on the Jaguar. Also agree that they probably would've added more to the game that could've quickly put it out of range of what the Jaguar was capable of (if the game was good enough they no doubt would've textured the cars and beefed up the graphics if it was in that state in '95). Just commenting on the current state as it is it looks like something that would've fallen between generations but not really on one side or the other.
  6. I doubt it's any relation to the PSX version, the psx version is what I expected when I first google'd it though. I don't see it with the same draw distance on the Jaguar (probably the PC version they are showing, as Lost Dragon suggested). But the flat shaded cars look like they came out of club drive and the terrain looks like hoverstrike with low-res low color depth textures. imo it just looks like the kind of game the jaguar could do just given what we've seen of the current library (nevermind all the "untapped potential" )
  7. September '95 was actually quite late to abandon development on the Jaguar. If they waited until that point to determine the Jaguar wasn't "financially feasible" to develop for, they must've had pretty low expectations. Rollcage may have been a decent game if it were released but the video / still shots that are available don't look terribly impressive in the way of graphics. I don't really see why it'd be a stretch to see that game on the Jaguar.
  8. Even though a 3-button controller without the keypad might work, I think ultimately it's worth getting the original Jaguar controller. That way you won't regret it if you find a game you like that uses the keypad otherwise you may wind up shelling out for both in the end. Even having a controller shipped from the USA is much cheaper than the the 99 EUR for the controller you provided a link to. They should be in the $15-$20 range and there are often 2 controller deals for about $25.
  9. it is down because godaddy switched their servers. since im about 90% done with a complete rewrite of our site I'm just going to wait until that's finished to put it back up. will have pages for our new releases that'll launch alongside our reprints of hotdog and relief pitcher plus some features on them once it's up too.
  10. Wish that kind of stuff happened around here. None of the stores that I've ever been to have done deep discounts at the end of a systems life, save for our local Meijer who put the Virtua Boy down to $15 at the very end. Our local K-Mart, Walmart, Meijer .etc were still listing Saturn games at $50 into 1998 and K-Mart was still trying to get like $20 per Saturn game even when they shut down a few stores around here (around 2001). I always kind of wondered what happened to those unsold stock when I was a kid... whether they sent them back to the publishers or what I have to say I NEVER saw a Jaguar in a retail store despite scoping out the display cases for the latest SNES games around that time.
  11. in gradeschool a friend got AVP for the PC, and before he went home we tried to install it on my computer. It barely ran but I found out it was on the Jaguar too and so I got a Jaguar it was when bits still mattered (had a PSX and knew some people with N64's) and a 64-bit system I hadn't heard of baffled me. I got it with Wolfenstein 3D, Club Drive, Kasumi Ninja, Raiden, AVP and Trevor McFur for christmas (AVP and a bunch of cheapies from B&C). As bad as the games were (Club Drive, Kasumi Ninja, Trevor McFur) they were the kind of games that looked really cool until you played them. At least Atari kind of knew what people wanted, their execution just sucked.
  12. The idea for RetroVGS carts to have end labels would be for them to not use the original Jaguar cart design. Personally the games that come in cardboard boxes, I don't store in the cardboard boxes. I mind the condition of the packaging. Not to the extent that I store them in acrylic cases or plastic bags or lock them in a bank vault. But still, I like to avoid the unnecessary opportunities for myself or others to accidentally damage them. It would be kind of cool if the RetroVGS came with generic (non-branded) clamshells so that the Jaguar scene could use them. That'd be a decent alternative, as I even store my genesis games in their clamshells despite end labels. Even if the RVGS bombs they might have a product they'll recover their expenses on. But then again, that'd just be another weird case of the RVGS and the Jaguar sharing the same molds .
  13. Back in the day they weren't all that big of a deal for me because the games cost like $50-$60 and I (nor anyone I knew) had a collection much greater than 10 or so carts. And only bought for like 1 or two systems so the games were often strewn about the floor in their room or something. These days I find them a lot more useful with over 100 games or so in a collection, and trying to keep them tidy in a drawer .etc. One of those things that isn't a problem until it becomes one I guess
  14. despite my reservations in regard to the retro VGS I still think it'd be nice to see it have carts with end labels. whatever the reason the later cart systems didn't have them (32x / Jaguar / N64 / A'Can), I find it really annoying.
  15. Country Grid was actually released on the PC if anybody really needs to see what it would've been like I think Vid Grid was a pretty solid extra to include with the JagCD as Clint said, it was pretty well done for what it was and showed off some interesting FMV techniques for the time. Not something that many people would spend a lot of time on, but would leave a decent impression on them anyway. Vid Grid was also released on the PC, although I never otherwise would've imagined it as a retail game sold outside a package.
  16. There have been instances of save chip failures. There is also a limit on the guaranteed times a game can be saved. As per the Wolfenstein 3D Manual, 100,000
  17. not exactly related to your post, but would've been cool to see a game boy camera type device for the Lynx
  18. One element that adds to the collectability of real retro gaming systems (imo) is that they are a relic of their time. They were real efforts to compete against rival platforms and have historical significance. They were not designed to attract compulsive collectors and speculators. It's understandable there are "collectors" this will appeal to, but I think it's also understandable that many will not see an underpowered modern platform being advertised as a "new retro gaming system" as attractive. Personally I think that seeing new games on older platforms is always nice, and a little more than a "so what," because I'd prefer to get them on the older platform I would be interested to see some good original games released for it. I'm not against someone producing a system and investing their own resources to bring some fun new games out in a unique way. Releasing a bunch of ports to introduce the system does not give a good first impression imo though, and won't give them a good feel for the people who may have been interested had they had some games that demonstrate the potential of their concept right away though. But there's no "expectation" of paying $50+ for $5 worth of components for an android game. There's perceived value in the game just being on a cartridge. I'm not going to purport to know what kind of dev tools or publishing arrangements they have for the RVGS but I imagine they'll facilitate the publishing so you're not sitting on a bunch of components, and that they will have some basic dev tools that will performs functions sufficient for relatively simple games. I haven't read up on that so any information would be interesting.
  19. we are getting everything ready, I like to think within a month but we have had a small delay that we're going to work around but I think we're back on track
  20. It's a combination of the images dimensions and the DPI. It has nothing to do with the printer, just the source image. There are lots of Image Size Calculators online that'll help you determine the size of the printout, but normally you wouldn't do this after the fact but deliberately design your artwork that way.
  21. if there is a reasonable assurance that you will make $20-50k developing for the Retro VGS by selling a "premium pricesd limited edition" cart version of your game, when you have already developed it for something like the app store (that has no such assurances), it makes sense. & there is unlikely the same barriers toward getting games on the Retro VGS as there are on the PSN or XBLA. This is especially true if the RVGS team is providing tools to facilitate the translations. After thinking a little more about it I don't see it as that bad of an idea with conservative expectations (as they seem to have), considering the mania surrounding collecting these days (not because the idea is good, but because there are likely "collectors" that will buy into this). For some (perhaps a good deal of games on the platform) it'll be about getting more money for less sales of a game that will sell partially (or mostly) due to the gimmick that the platform offers. that's just my thought without seeing how this actually plays out, but I guess time will tell. Personally I just see it as a lot of talent squandered on an imposter that could've been directed toward developing retro gaming products for actual retro gaming systems
  22. Wolfenstein 3D doesn't run well in the 640x480 mode but as shown it's fine in the 320x200 mode runs fine, I guess if you want to think of it in the sense that most console games of the time run nearer the 320x200 resolution it runs fine for the time. I'm sure someone with some reasonable coding skills could configure the game to run in the low res mode on the pippin so it runs full screen pretty easily. When I get some time I'd like to test out a list of games (like Blackthorne .etc) to see which ones can be run on the Pippin pretty much as-is. But as I've never really been too enthusiastic about that side of computer/console systems (like running floppies on the CDTV or CD32 or converting Amiga Floppy games to CD32 disc) there's not a lot of motivation. Especially with no crack to the authentication to allow wider release of these games. I actually have the mac version of shockwave (North american version) so someday I can take a look and see if they just slapped it on the system or did some actual work
  23. I just put up a video showing with my iphone, don't have any capture software setup. This runs with the 16MB memory expansion, it's actually quite a bit worse without it. But it shows that some optimization is required aside from just running mac game strictly on the pippin. if you watch it all the way through you can see how the game reacts to different screen sizes and that you can still save to the flash memory, although with some extra work you can add hard drives, zip drives .etc to your Pippin too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wz4BQzOmZAY
  24. That's just a normal @World. You can see the number 1 on the bottom. The retail @world set came in a large box with 3 boxes inside of it (box 1,2 and 3 ). Those were being sold for a little while by a Japanese wholesaler and some people decided to flip them a a bit of a markup as per that guy. I got one and it wasn't anything unusual. There is a rumor that some unsold @World stock were sent back to Japan and sold with a ROM that allows unauthenticated software to run, but I don't know how well substantiated it was. Honestly you cannot tell which model @World runs unauthenticated software by looking at it. Even some of the Katz consoles didn't allow it (I know, I have one that doesn't).
