  1. Picked up mine yesterday. Only played it for a short time but I gotta say it's pretty cool. Decent selection of built-in games, good controls, feels good and plays good. My only criticism is the screen is tiny to my old eyes. Some details, like the new Frogger graphics, are almost lost at the screen size. But for the price it's really a cool toy.
  2. A Dog's Life was a great game. Unconventional, perhaps, but good. Yeah, Mr. Mosquito. Never really figured that out. Surprised I didn't see "Aquanauts Holiday" or "Tail of the Sun" on the list. Again, good games but not very typical. Kind of an Ecco vibe. Curious why Smash TV made the list though. Maybe just the backstory?
  3. Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? Bueller? Any comments on the above proposal? 100 views and nobody has a comment? Maybe I should make a separate thread to outline my proposal. Although I have the feeling it's the same 7 people who have consistently contributed and only do so when convenient. I get that. Anything in the above that would prevent you from still taking part? Or is it time to retire it here and take part in challenges elsewhere?
  4. If anyone needs me I'll be watching SpongeBob. For the next 4 years.

  5. I guess I never noticed those threads before. Thanks for the info. As I say, I may be interested but I'd also be interested in slightly changing up the format in order to make it simpler to moderate and hopefully generate more buzz/participation. I think every week is pretty aggressive to moderate and too easy to miss a favorite game. Maybe a bi-weekly or even monthly format? To compensate for the less frequent format, each challenge would be a themed tournament featuring several games. So even if it were monthly we could feature 4 games during that challenge allowing players to focus their efforts on a favorite or split their time accordingly. Personally I always enjoyed the double-headers and multi-game tournaments the most. Challenge themes could be anything from all Pac-Man games to seasonal themes or games that share a certain trait. We could still take game requests and themes would be created around those titles. I may supplement challenges with other titles to enhance the theme. Moderator perks. I'd also encourage more sharing of strategies, links, memories, trash-talking, bragging, whatever per challenge thread. Not mandatory but it could make it more fun to participate. A less frequent format would allow me to research each game a little more and add relevant links, photos, videos, whatever per thread to provide a little more background and generate more buzz. Thoughts? If anyone else is interested in stepping in and maintaining the current format I'm happy to step aside and continue to just play. But if nobody else is interested in moderating I'd be interested in feedback on the above.
  6. Does this mean you found a new gig? Congrats! I am potentially interested but I confess I don't fully understand the stats/scoring system or where you pull the previous scores from.
  7. I HATE YOU ADOBE!!! Thanks for letting me vent.

  8. Received my copy yesterday too. I've only skimmed the surface of what the book offers but I am impressed. Not only is it well-designed and written but it represents what must have been a herculean effort in tracking down finished art, concept art, artists, and info. There are sections on the software, hardware, artists, advertising & promotions and much more. I absolutely love the huge pictures that show all the art details that were lost to the printing processes or size limitations of the time. The 2-page cropped image of the Moon Patrol art that even shows the texture of the pencil and board is amazing. I could look at that stuff all day long. Fantastic job, Tim!
  9. Newly announced Microsoft Surface Studio PC looks pretty sweet to this longtime Mac user. Given Apple has pretty much given up on the creative pros these days...

As long as we're fantasizing, I'd like to see a new MacMini with upgradable RAM, and user-replaceable dual SSD drives. And a pro video card option. Basically, a MacMini Pro.

Remember when Apple products "just worked"? I hate doing tech support just because WiFi or iCloud doesn't work like they're suppose to...

  10. Scratch that. I fired up the IOS Atari classics which does allow for touchscreen use and only got 9030 points. It's just a tough game. I'll try again later using MAME.
  11. I'm not really impressed with the idea. So it looks like a master device with a screen plugs into an endless variety of peripherals you can purchase. You can plug it into a big screen to power a traditional gaming experience. Then take it with you to the john to continue your gaming. In the meantime the rest of the family stares at an empty big screen holding useless controllers. The obvious solution to that dilemma is everyone buys their own Switch and can plug theirs into the empty big screen. So that means everyone has to carry a Switch, phone, laptop, fitness tracker, etc, etc, etc? Not impressed.
  12. I always thought this game was tough even with a trackball. It needs a touchscreen IMO.
  13. I just got the amazon email too. Estimated arrival date is Halloween!
  14. I read an interesting thread someplace where gamers theorized that most complaints were coming from younger gamers. Gamers raised on the latest and greatest, used to instant gratification and lots of bells and whistles. Older gamers, on the other hand, have a different perspective and don't mind the pace of NMS. I'd be in the latter. I can't tell you how many hours I spent enjoying games like Adventure (the original text version), Swordquest, MYST, Tail of the Sun, and Aquanaut's Holiday. NMS is way more engaging than any of those titles IMO but it does share a certain vibe with them. Even the fact that NMS has little to no instructions makes me think it's a deliberate attempt to draw you into this vibe, become engaged in the NMS universe, and encourage you to explore. There may not be the instant gratification that some may expect. But when someone goes out of their way to create a game that can contain 18 quintillion different planets to explore, I wouldn't want or expect that.
  15. It's essentially a Pac-Man clone with a twist. - There is no maze per se but there are obstacles scattered throughout to block your way. - Collect all the fruits to clear the board. - Collecting the heart freezes the bad guys for a short time. - The pits scattered throughout are actually warp points that allow you to travel inside the "brick" tunnels. The tunnels allow you to travel on another layer (presumably below) the main layer and avoid crowds. Be aware the bad guys can use the tunnels too. Sometimes they even guard warp points anticipating where you'll pop up. Play a couple throw-away games to get up to speed. After you get the hang of things it's pretty fun. An interesting twist on a classic genre.
  16. I just bought a PS4 this weekend exclusively to play this game. I only have a few hours in on it so far but I absolutely love it. The game is immense. It looks great, it's well thought out, and it absolutely delivers on everything I hoped it would be. A very non-linear, open universe, with lots of opportunities to make the game what you want it. To the nay sayers I will say this. The game does give an overall feeling like you're getting in on the ground floor of something. That's not to mean the game lacks polish or objectives. But it does very much feel like you are a pioneer exploring a new universe. But that's exactly how you should feel in a game that's only been out for 2 weeks that literally offers a new universe to explore. I think it offers a solid foundation to build some amazing stories on. Look at it this way. Remember the movie Aliens where the people colonized the planet? Later it turned into a stage for a lot of action and aliens that pretty much killed everyone. But before that happened there was a lot of exploring, colonizing, a getting to understand the world. Whether it happens in upgrades or whether it's already hidden in the game, I have no doubt No Man's Sky will continue to deliver amazing gameplay experiences. It's just not a game for anyone looking for a quick, superficial, action fix. Stick with it and it is very rewarding.
  17. I've not been into modern games since early PS2 days. But No Man's Sky has me seriously intrigued. Seriously.

I'm glad you brought up Aquanaut's Holiday and Tail of the Sun -- this has the same kind of vibe (and unfortunately, a similar lack of polish -- it is very crashy for a console game)
