  1. I've been playing Snake Pit quite a bit lately. The controls are pretty unique. It's really fun with a trackball!

I also want to add Chameleon - would have been somewhat of a unique platformer at the time it was released. Not bad. Extremely rare. I've never even seen a picture of the cab or marquee. It was surprisingly ported to the Casio PV-1000 though.

  2.

Wow. I've not been able to make this work. I installed -dev (ver 2.8 something). What is the exact command you have to put into autostart.sh?

I'd have to look at the file to know for sure and I don't have the Pi with me. I do remember on mine that the autostart.sh file had just one line of code in it. Insert --screenrotate 1 or --screenrotate 3 immediately right after emulationstation. Also make sure that there's a space between emulationstation and --screenrotate. By default I believe there is something commented out after emulationstation and if you put the --screenrotate after that, it won't do anything.

  3. Totally hear what you're saying. Never been a fan of bashers -- they're either overly simplistic or there are a million moves you could never hope to remember. In my experience, it only wound up in so much button mashing. I've enjoyed a few of the bashers we've played in the HRC (especially Cadillacs and Dinosaurs) but that's because there are limitations on credits. The whole "pay-to-win" thing started in the mid-'80s and never really went away, and in the process I lost interest in arcade games completely. Plus games like X-Men and Simpsons cost a whole dollar per play which was pretty steep in 1992; no wonder I either stuck with pinball or the old Time Pilot machine in the corner whenever I went to the arcade back then.

I loved them back in the day when they came out just because of the graphics and presentation, however these days I find most of them boring and mindless. I still get a lot of nostalgia from TMNT, but I usually don't feel like finishing it whenever I play it. I just do a credit or two. I was too young to properly enjoy the early 80s arcade games when they were originally released, though these days I play them more than anything else.

  4. Another outstanding game that nobody ever seems to recognize is Eggs, which is an early 80s title by Universal (I think):

Actually, I didn't include this one in my first post in this thread because the game goes beyond "underrated" to the realm of "curiously-unheard-of." It was a while ago, but I remember one day I tried to dig up some info on the game and was not able to come up with much on the internet, which is rare nowadays; no matter how obscure a game, there always seems to be some Wiki, blogger, or Youtuber that has documented its history. I think the game may just be a prototype, which would help explain its next-level obscurity factor. But Eggs is a very polished, addictive, and fun game that uses a pretty original and creative play mechanic for its time. It's always at the top of my list when people ask me to recommend lesser-known games from the classic era.

It's a Universal game? I always assumed it was made by the same company as Mysterious Stones, due to it having the exact same egg-kicking mechanic, but that was made by Technos.

Wild Western is a good game. My suspicion is that the people who are giving it a hard time are playing it in emulation, and it's a game where it really only plays well when you're using the original controls; Front Line falls into this category as well.

I've actually never had the pleasure of playing Wild Western on the original cab. I first discovered it on the Taito Legends PS2 disc. I find assigning a button combo for the aiming to work pretty well for me. I set it up so you hold button 2 while quickly pushing a direction on the joystick to change your aim. The game isn't as fast paced as say Robotron where you need to constantly be shooting in different directions so the button combo isn't that bad. I'd still love to play it with the dial though.

  6. I'd consider Mr. Do! underrated in relation to Dig Dug. I strongly feel that Mr. Do! is the superior game with deeper mechanics, but many people scoff and say it's just a Dig Dug ripoff with a lame clown protagonist.

I would also list Donkey Kong 3 though it seems to be getting more appreciation in the past decade or so.

For obscure games, I'd say Lasso, Time Tunnel, and Wild Western. Wild Western in particular gets a lot of hate on Youtube. It's not a bad game, though it can be difficult. Perhaps it's the loud train whistle that puts everyone off.

You will see tearing if you flip the system using display_rotate in the config file. If you flip it using the libretto emulator settings, it's smooth as silk. The downside is that Emulation Station and other configuration screens can't be flipped, so they will be sideways. Hopefully that's addressed at some point in an update.

Thanks, I eventually figured it out. I also found out that you can rotate Emulation Station separately by adding the --screenrotate launch parameter to the autostart.sh file. You need to install emulationstation-dev for it to work though.

I saw that you mentioned 45K earlier in Puyo. I think we should honour it even without a scr$.

I din't play Tetris anymore but I actually got quite fascinated by Puyo, trying to make sense of it all. Even read a guide online, something I never really do. And still, nothing. Can't crack this game, my brain is just too slow and wired differently for this kind of gameplay. No idea how I got that 20K, that was a real fluke.

Now that I've played more, I believe that it must have been 4,500. I think I just got lucky on the one game with a couple of big combos and got 18,196 at the fish. I can't get anywhere near that now and I can last pretty long on the foot guy. Yeah, the scoring system seems to be weird - like there's a small chance for your score to sky rocket but it seems to be a luck thing.

  9. Having tons of fun with my retropie'd Galaga cab. Joust 2 today. I have it on the PS3, it's more fun on a cabinet in danger of being crushed by a dwarf.

Have you noticed any lag/screen tearing? I'm working on converting my brother's Galaga cab to Retropie, but I'm having a lot of performance issues in vertical mode. It's a 3B+ with heat sinks and a fan and it's having trouble running games with the screen rotated. Scrolling games have a lot of tearing and single screen games aren't very smooth - even Pac-Man.

I did some searching and found many others having this issue when running games vertically, but no solutions yet. Just curious how it's running for you.

  10. I hardly ever threw a controller. The only time I can really remember was with the NES Ninja Gaiden. Getting to the final boss, dying, and being sent all the way back to 6-1. That was the first time I ever threw a controller. I was SO pissed. And after many weeks, I finally managed to beat the final boss only to find out it wasn't the final boss and I died again and got sent back to 6-1. That was the second time I through my controller. I was picturing a room full of Japanese developers laughing hysterically at me, pointing at me and giving me the finger. In my head, this was the sole reason they made the game - it wasn't to make money, they made it to troll kids because they hated them so much.

  11. I used to play the SMS version of R-Type quite a bit growing up. The battle cruiser seems to be a lot tougher in the arcade version.

I think have passed level 2 in Calipso without dying a couple of times. You have to get lucky with the enemy groupings though. However, I don't think I ever did level 3 in one go.

  12. - What would be the maximum you would pay for OMNI? I know, hard to discuss at this point without showing more, but anyway, for a new retro inspired game system, brand new design, complete console with controller, brand new hardware, uses cartridge. You know my usual quality standards...

    $300

    - What would you consider the required minimum number of games at launch to be interested?

    6

    - How important is a pack-in game?

    Kinda important

    - What kind of retro games you would like to see?

Early 80s style like Donkey Kong, Mr. Do!, Bagman, Tutankham, Jungle Hunt, etc. I like the variety and imagination back then.

    - Do you like the idea of improved versions of classics? If so, would you prefer improved versions of console games or improved versions of arcade games? Or 100% new titles?

I'd say the coolest thing that I'd REALLY love to see are arcade ports that have new features and levels - think of Donkey Kong Remix and Donkey Kong Jr Remix. Those type of ports would be awesome, especially if they are of the caliber of those two remixes. Give me a new experience with the old games that I love and have played countless times.

But in general, I'd prefer arcade ports over console ports. 100% original games would be cool too.

    - How important a feature "user content creation" would be for you? I mean, the ability for users to create their own games using a simple language directly on the console?

That would be pretty cool. It would depend on what the limitations are and what kind of games you can make. If it was possible to at least make a game of a quality similar to a top early 80s arcade game that would be great.

    - How do you feel about branding? Would you like a well known retro gaming name behind OMNI? Do you prefer the Opcode name? Feel free to speak your mind here.

It doesn't matter much to me.

    - How important is online on a retro inspired console?

Not very important. The only thing I'd care about is maybe having your scores uploaded to a leaderboard somewhere.

    - Anything else you think is important? Anything else in your wishlist?

I'd like it to include a 240p out option for CRTs. The flicker of 480i is bothersome.

Also, it would be cool to support some sort of compatibility for some of the old unique controllers like Atari paddle controllers or trackballs. Like if you have a usb port, would it be possible to be able to have a 2600-daptor to work with it?

Kiong's Valley is a real challenge. It's so easy to get trapped.

Indeed. As a puzzle game, it really should have had continues or unlimited lives. Those later levels are tough and you need to spend a lot of time on them to figure them out. This is one of those games that I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to complete or not - at least without watching a walkthrough.
