  1. Well I received my copy of Scrapyard Dog today (thanks CV!!!) and now I'm wondering why this game is so overlooked. It has great graphics(better than SMB IMHO) and it's a pretty fun game to play(from what I've played so far). If you haven't played SD yet and want a SMB game well...get Scrapyard Dog! The 7800 can obviously do a side-scroller very well, I imagine that anyone who knows the 7800 inside and out could produce a great looking game.

  2. As I mentioned in another thread, I just got Krull the other day and I have been enjoying it throughly. It was definently a good effort on Atari's part and is the best movie-to-game translation I've played on the 2600 (ok, so there aren't many of those to compete with).

One part I've been practicing on is the first screen where the slayers come to steal away your fianceé. How many slayers have you managed to kill before she gets carted away? Last night I was able to get a score of 3400 on that first part after several attempts. I'll have to see later if I can get higher than that.

  3. How did Pitfall on the NES turn out? I've never played it, it seemed to be rather obscure...

Something along the lines of Pitfall 2 would be great. That was always one of my favorite 2600 games. If you gave Harry a whip(or allow him to duck at least) and put some bosses in the mix and it certainly would continue to be a fun game. I'm just starting to really think about how such a project would turn out to be on the 7800 though. :ponder:

  4. Good point. I would like to see a good arcade game like wizard of wor, or Mr. do ported to the 7800.

What we need here isn't another arcade conversion. Rather, we need something new and original (such as SMB was on the NES). Remember, it took original platformer games to get the NES off the ground and running. The 7800 has precious few of these side-scrolling gems. So that's what's needed. Not necesseraly a SMB conversion or even a clone, but a side-scroller of some kind.

I agree with this statement. Although I have yet to play Scrapyard Dog (CV, where are you?) I think that if anyone is going to make a side-scroller game, let it be original. Can one be made that is just as fun, if not funner than SMB? Of course. It would make for a great entry in the homebrewer's contest

I just need to dedicate myself to studying assembly and then I'll make one.

    :D

  5. I just beat it but when I pasted the image it came out as just a black screen. Is there something else other than print screen you should use in z26?  :?

Hmm... I am not familiar with Z26 for Windows. I use Stella for Mac. For printscreen in Windows I am pretty sure you can hold down a key and take a snapshot of just the active window, or the whole screen. Which way were you trying to do it? Try the other way.

At any rate ShaggytheAtarian, I believe you when you say you beat the game. Send me a PM telling me how much of a hint you want: hard or tell you step by step how to get to it.

    Cheers!

Perhaps I should download Stella as well. Every time I've tried to take screenshots in z26 they come out very strange, if at all.

Sending a PM here in a second... ;)

  6. Sweet pics! I swear in my wrath that I will one day own that many 2600 carts! Of course I have yet to break 200 although I need to buy a second bin now to store all of the games I've purchased lately (I haven't counted my cart collection in a while, so perhaps I should do that sometime :ponder: )

    Congrats on the 500!

  7. I've almost beaten the game. I believe I made it to level 7 and I died. Oh well, I should give it another shot. I forgot about the hidden area while I was playing though. I should keep an eye out for that.

  8. I woulsn't mind seeing more completely original games, like the ones we have on the way. That makes the Jag a more exclusive and cooler system to own in the long run. That's probably one of the things I love about the Jag the most...more original games that you won't find anywhere else. Obviously it still needs more just like the 7800 does.

  9. In regards to porting SMB, I think the user Analmux might be able to translate the work he did on the Atari computer to the 7800. However, I am clueless about programming, programming languages so I have no idea if this is even possible.

Or, someone could hack Scrapyard Dog and use it as a basis for a game with different characters, etc. I played it through emulation and I know the 7800 definitely can do side scrollers to an extent.

It seems like kenfused has been able to port BeefDrop over from the 5200 with relative ease so perhaps that clone wouldn't be too hard.

Speaking of Scrapyard Dog, where is CV at? I've been trying to contact him sbout my copy of the game which I'm still waiting for. :|

  10. The only things the 7800 version has over the NES version is faithful levels, and two players at once. Other than those two details, the NES version is IMO superior. The 7800 version has weak, blocky graphics, understandably bad music, and higher difficulty (partly the game, partly the bad controllers). The backgrounds look awful until mission 3, and even then they don't take much advantage of the system.

I am glad that the 7800 at least got a port, but for a 1989 game, it should've been a lot better than it is.

I've been curious about the screenshots I've seen of DD on the 7800. TO be honest, from the shots here at AA it looks like crap. But on a few other sites I've seen shots where it looks much better. Is that because of the difference between the emulator and the real thing or something else?

  11. And soon it's going to have some great games like Gorf 2000
Isn't this vaporware? It's been trotted around as "coming soon" for about 10 years now.

I had been thinking the same thing until the programmers showed off a bunch of screenshots somewhat recently and gave K3V the beta version to test out. 8) It looks a lot different now, it's pretty impressive, although I have no idea when they plan on finishing it. I think they've kept it under wraps because it has taken so long but it still is in development.

You can see some of the latest screen shots here but you have to register and become a member to check them out.

  12. I'm still looking for SpiderMan, Infiltrate, Congo Bongo, Quest for Quintana Roo(the non-Telegames one) and Mines of Minos. I played these games a lot as a kid over at my friends house and for some reason them seem a little hard to come by. Spiderman should be easy, I guess I'm not looking hard enough. But I'd really like to get Mines of Minos.

  13. OK, this is my first label ever for a contest. I admit that it's kind of derivitive, but I hope it works. It's not 100% done yet. I've also thought of making the background black, but then it would loose it's Pitfall-ness style to it. What do you guys think?

(It's not showing up in the preview, so I'll cross my fingers and post...)

  14. I would also recommend the 7800 and the Jaguar. The great thing about any Atari system you chose is that there are new games coming out for them so no matter which one you pick, you'll not only be getting a good system with fun games, but you can look forward to future releases. 8)

Personally I like the Jaguar a lot even though it's generally frowned upon. It's got some great games like Tempest 2000, AvP, BattleMorph, Iron Soldier, Zero 5, etc. And soon it's going to have some great games like Gorf 2000, Mad Bodies, Clicks and Eerievale.

If you're looking for handheld action the Lynx is the way to go. It has a great library and the largest game library after the 2600. ComLynxing on many games is a lot of fun.

The 7800 is great not only due to it's backwards compatability with the 2600 but it has some crazy original titles of it's own, like Ninja Golf. It also has some of the best arcade conversions you'll find on an Atari system, like with Joust, Ms. Pac-Man, Centipede and here shortly Burgertime(to be called BeefDrop).

Any way you go you'll probably enjoy it a lot. I can't say anything about the CV (never had one) but it's good to own an Atari.

  15. Awesome idea, I'm totally obsessed with swordquest (who knows why, maybe the concept) My husband is right now recreating the contest items for me (the sword, talisman, etc.) so I can be like J.T. and hang it over my fire..lol

    Now that's dedication.

I think it would be great to have a sort of Swordquest-"Enhanced" series. Make it so you don't need the comic book and as LT mentioned, give the game a point. Of course I'd like to see a reiteration of it done on the 7800, but the 2600 would be just as nice to see it on.
