I've been running Atari Gamer, a website focusing on Atari Lynx history and news, since January 2018 but it hasn't been until recently that I've got into a regular schedule of article posts. At the moment I'm limiting to one article a week, released on a Monday. I'm starting this thread to announce new articles as they become available.

Any feedback, comments, article suggestions are very welcome. I hope you all enjoy reading some fresh new content about Atari Lynx!

Last week's article was - Behind the scenes - making of the 48 in 1 Atari Lynx multicart.

I'm also working with Mark aka MillipedeMan with promoting his Lynx Handycast.

Past articles can be found here: Articles

Congrats, Igor, on the one-year anniversary of linking AtariGamer articles on the AtariAge Lynx forums! ?

  2. Based solely on my experience in collecting the games, here's a general breakdown of how the different cart styles are distributed in the different cartons:

    Blue Lightning (PA2020):

Large carton could include flat or ridged cart

Small carton with gray vertical band could include flat, ridged or curved lip cart

Small carton without gray vertical band will include only curved lip cart

    Electrocop (PA2021):

Large carton could include flat or ridged cart

Small carton with gray vertical band could include flat, ridged or curved lip cart

Small carton without gray vertical band will include only curved lip cart

    Gates of Zendocon (PA2023):

Large carton could include flat or ridged cart

Small carton with gray vertical band could include flat, ridged or curved lip cart

Small carton without gray vertical band will include only curved lip cart

    Gauntlet: The Third Encounter (PA2024):

Small carton without gray vertical band (Japanese) will include only ridged cart

Small carton without gray vertical band (all others) will include only curved lip cart

    California Games (PA2025?

Pack-in baggy could include flat, ridged or curved lip cart

Small carton without gray vertical band will include only curved lip cart

    Chips Challenge (PA2028?

Small carton with gray vertical band could include flat, ridged or curved lip cart

Small carton without gray vertical band will include only curved lip cart

Just keep in mind that this breakdown is not definitive.

One last tip: Sometimes it's difficult to determine whether a Blue Lightning, Electrocop, or Gates of Zendocon carton is the large-size or the small-size when looking at photos of them online, especially on eBay and especially when no other info about the carton size is given in the description. Simply count the rows of Lynx X's in the vertical gray band on the right of the carton: 10 and a half X's means it's a large carton, 7 and a half X's means it's a small carton.

Hope this info helps, and happy collecting!

  3. I have the pictured cartridge holder, made specifically to hold 18 TI cartridges, with a slot at the top for manuals. I'm pretty sure that it dates from the early 1980s, but I picked this one up a few years ago on eBay for around $20. It's perfect, but I could really use a couple more; anyone know the manufacturer? I used to know who made them, but have forgotten it, and there is no name or manufacturer on mine. Knowing who made these BITD might help me find another one on eBay. Thanks.

    Hi.

Many of you Lynxters might be wondering what's going on with the Atari Lynx HandyCast. You are right to wonder.

Well, unfortunately, life has very much gotten in the way over the last few months, including being very, very busy at work, and also dealing with family issues (including the untimely passing of my younger brother earlier this month).

I appreciate everyone's patience while I try to get back into the regular groove of releasing a new episode of the HandyCast every month, but at this point, I don't know when that will be. My hope is that I can get the partially finished KLAX episode out sometime in June, but that may not happen.

I am still very committed to doing the podcast on a regular basis; I just need some time to sort through the obstacles that life has thrown at me, especially since my brother's passing. Please be patient, and I promise you all that I'll get back to it.

And when I do, everyone here will be the first to know.

    Thanks. 1f642.png :)

  5. Please make a single picture of the unknown one--I think I know what it is, but I want to be sure and it is a bit hard to read in the original picture.

Sorry, Ksarul...didn't see your request until this morning. I'll get a good shot each overlay when I get home from work this evening and then post them here tomorrow morning for you. FWIW, I'm guessing that the overlay in the left of the picture is for some sort of graphics software, since it lists colors.

  6.

While supplies last, sink your teeth into these Songbird 20th anniversary games each at $10 off regular price:
Jaguar Frog Feast with box (only 5 boxes left!)
Jaguar Protector SE (include Native CD and Jag-Ads CD)
    Jaguar Robinson's Requiem CD
    Lynx Alpine Games Bonus cart
Lynx Crystal Mines II: Buried Treasure
    Lynx Remnant
Sale prices end 11:59pm CDT on Friday, March 15.
Also be sure to pick up Lynx MegaPak, which was reprinted a couple weeks ago. And stay tuned for the Jaguar Mystery Project #3 reveal coming soon!

I definitely need to bump this announcement!

  7. That is the standard overlay on your keyboard--and from the looks of it, it is probably glued into place. The keyboard definitely didn't come with it permanently affixed like that.

Yep, you were right, Ksarul...the blank key was indeed mounted to an overlay, not to the console itself. It was not glued down, actually; it was a very snug fit to the console's keyboard, so I didn't notice it was an overlay. So I have two different overlays: one that likely came with the console, and one for an unnamed software package that I don't have (but which, I'm sure, will be identified by yourself or by someone on this thread). Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Ksarul!

  8. That key is actually part of the standard 99/4 overlay. It makes it easier to pick up the overlay. Looking at your console, it looks like you have an overlay in place--and the key is probably attached to that. I have several such overlays in my collection, most of which have the blank keys on them (later issues didn't have the keys, even of the same overlay, as the change came somewhere about halfway through the 99/4 lifecycle).

I have a separate overlay that I got when I bought the 99/4; it does not have a cut-out for that key, and I did not include that overlay in the photos. Having said that, and after reading your post, though, I'll have to check my 99/4 when I get home from work today to see if the overlay of which you speak that includes a blank key glued to it has actually already been mounted permanently to my console. When I got the console, I just assumed that the option commands printed above the keys (Redo, Clear, Ins, Del, etc.) were actually printed on the console.

Thanks for the info, and I'll let you know what I find.

  9. Does anyone know why the 99/4 I picked up about six months ago has a blank key mounted just to the right of the L key? The key itself does not do anything; in fact, it seems to have just been glued (professionally, as far as I can tell) directly on to the surface. It makes the overlay sit rather awkwardly on the right side. Any ideas?

  10. Well that’s certainly not “cheating”. Most of Telegames’ releases were after the commercial life of the Lynx, and have always been a mix-and-match affair, so there’s no “standard production run” for anything but Desert Strike, Qix, and Chess. :)

You should most definitely pick up Wyvern Tales and Zaku; they’re stellar games.

I'd like to echo David's praise of Wyvern Tales and Zaku...they're fantastic.

  11.

When I bought this game NIB (sealed) in March of 2017 I discovered that there were two posters inside the carton as well. But I neglected to check to see if one of them was in a different language. I'll check when I get home after work today.

    Yeah, I checked my copy...French!

  14. Quicky pic of my Lynx collection (second time around collection)….

    Needs:

    California Games

    Ninja Gaiden

    NFL Football

    Scrapyard Dog

    Block Out

    Ms Pac-Man

    Toki

    Bill and Ted

    Jimmy Conners Tennis

    Dracula

    Dinolympics

    Super Asteroids/Missile Command

    And:

Hyperdrome (was this an official release?)

    normal_DSCI0475.JPG

Hyperdrome (originally titled Grid Runner) was not released until 1999, at least five years after the Lynx was discontinued. It was released by Telegames either on a black or a green pcb (printed circuit board) inside a CD jewel case. Telegames recently reissued the game on a curved lip cartridge inside a proper Lynx-style carton. I count it as an after-market title, and therefore not one of the original releases needed for my collection. Hope this info helps, and great collection!

  15. Sometimes you open a brand new Lynx game and get that game, sometimes you open it and get a little surprise inside! https://atarigamer.com/articles/a-french-surprise--unboxing-a-brand-new-copy-of-apb-for-atari-lynx
