I'm back from taking some time out from AA.  I had gotten quite disgusted with certain people sticking their nose into some of the off-topic threads, seemingly for the sole purpose of disrupting them and demeaning the character of those who participated in them, that I decided to stay away for a good long while.

I'm still disgusted at that state of affairs and still appalled at the way management has handled it, but my blood has cooled down significantly.  And so I feel ready to come back for the good things about AA and some of the great folks here; people like you guys for instance!

  5. Just switched from IPFire to pfSense for my home edge router/firewall. It's a pretty big improvement I think.

    1. x=usr(1536)

      x=usr(1536)

pfSense is really solid, and has grown to have a pretty nice featureset. Good choice :)

IPFire could do a heck of a lot; nearly as much as pfSense. The biggest reason I switched was that IPFire was limited to single thread execution. I have Gigabit internet, and if you want to keep it busy while applying IDS/IPS; single thread isn't going to cut it. But I'm finding other bits that I like better too. So yeah, it does seem to be a good choice.

  6. Well, I'm just about finished building my custom fabricated server rack! Things are working out real well so far.

@RT: I know you haven't seen it, but it is actually pretty nice. I fabricated it out of strut channel for the frame, 3/4" plywood for the top, bottom, left, and right panels, and 4 20RU sections of square hole rack rail. It is strong as hell, and has casters rated for 600 lbs. I'm into it about $200, and something on par with this to buy would be at least $600 on up. I love it when I accomplish something of quality and save money!

Wow. I've been letting this hang out there for a while. I finished months ago. Works a treat.

  7. Well, I went ahead and switched to Linux as my primary (bare metal) OS on my main desktop rig. Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon edition. It's speedy and useful. I' love it.

I've tried many times. I always just go back to Windows 7 (was XP) because all the emulators are for Windows, and it's just faster...

    3. fujidude

      fujidude

If anything, I've noticed Linux running faster than Win 10 did, though it's not huge difference.

My OS is not spying on me, my updates and reboots are fully under my control, all OS features are fully enabled/available all of the time (every version is the Ultimate/Enterprise/Professional), and there is no license fee!

  8. I'm thinking of finally making the switch to Linux as my main OS. Undesired things keep happening with Win 10 after updates it seems.

Have you considered switching to Mac? Like they used to say, because "making UNIX user friendly turned out to be easier than fixing Windows." LOL

    3. fujidude

      fujidude

I would not want to go Mac because to me, it is very much similar to Linux. Linux is free and is not too picky on what hardware you run it on.

I agree with the original premise. So much so that I'll probably pop over to the BBQ place on the corner for lunch today. :)

While having BBQ at another place last weekend, I saw textured vegetable protein on their menu. Mmm...TVPBBQ...not.

  20. Digitizing old records or tapes is painfully tedious.

    1. Stephen

      Stephen

It happens in realtime, it's not so bad. What sucks, is spending about 40 hours across a month, perfectly removing every single tick and pop from a record, to master it to CD. I did it twice, and that was the end.

    2. fujidude

      fujidude

When it comes to clicks and pops on records, I use an algorithm that works pretty well but not perfect. I just call it good enough and don't manually adjust the wave form. It's all the labeling, marking, etc. for the different tracks that is a bit of a pain.

Not at all, just use an IDE that looks for that kind of thing. I use Spyder. I agree with Guido; it's better to have easier to read code than have easier to type code. :)

I can't exactly say that Python reminds me of programming for classic computers, but it's a good language to start with. I use it in one of my introductory programming courses.

      fujidude

I meant that it provides a means to explore the excitement and enthusiasm for programming, similar to how it was back in the day. Back in the day, most computers shipped with at least one programming language out of the box; usually BASIC. Since Python is interpreted, it is much friendlier to rapid edit and test cycle of novice programmers (and is also convenient to seasoned ones as well). It has a great library to support everything from the simple to many advanced needs.
