  1. I never had the NES, which came out around this time, and had the same-ish CPU, and cost 6 times less than the IIc. But with games like Drol, Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, Kings Quest I, II, and III, Championship Lode Runner, and Conan, not to mention Infocom's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and graphic adventure games like Masquerade and Sherwood Forest... on a 9" monochrome green screen, who needs Nintendo? : ) But in 1994, ten years after getting the Apple IIc, I gave it away FREE to my co-worker who mentioned he had 4 kids, and their computer got stolen. Ok, it wasn't the most modern PC at the time, but it came with hundreds of floppy disks filled with the best games the Apple II had to offer. I had recently purchased the SNES (perhaps I should have gotten the IIgs, Amiga, or even the ST) and I was busy playing SF2 and Prince of Persia.
  2. Thanks for the reply. Apparently, I only have this one photo.
  3. This is me at age 15 playing Mario Bros. on the IIc in 1984. Please note: OP shorts, CH Joystick, Scribe Printer, and that big black thing to my left is my clear black acrylic locking disk box! This was my after school life for 3+ years of high school until I met my first girlfriend.
  4. Hello. I am the proud owner of a COCO3. Just wanted to introduce myself before I start going through the Forum. Can you recommend any old books that I should read. I might read them on archive.org so if you know of anything to start with I would appreciate it. My efforts to pick up a multicart or SD Card based drive have left me at a dead end. Nothing seems to be in current production?
  5. i bought another IIc on ebay this one looked great but had no power supply. i took the power supply from the old crappy IIc that i bought a few weeks ago that was in pretty bad shape and everything runs great now. i am back in business with ADTPro. this time, instead of an old Pentium 4 from 2002, I am using my current Dell and it absolutely flies. before i was using an audio cable on a IIe, then switched to serial, but it was slow. i got all my new ADTPro cables from RetroFloppy.com. the IIc was my first "REAL" computer back in 1984. i say real because i actually did homework and stuff on it through high school and college thanks to Appleworks and a Scribe Printer. now i need to place another order for more verbatim floppy disks. TOP 5 Favorite Games: 1. Beyond Castle Wolfenstein 2. Championship Lode Runner 3. Mario Bros. 4. Conan 5. Taipan
  6. I started out with emulation running under Windows XP, back in the day when it was difficult to find roms on cryptic FTP sites. Then, excited by my love for retro systems, I started buying the systems that I had (or wanted) when I was younger: Atari 600XL, Apple II, Game Boy Advance, Turbo Grafx 16, Sega Genesis, and Super Nintendo. I bought 4 Everdrives and an SIO2USB to play all the roms. Since it was my favorite console, I started scouring the internet for game boy cartridges to play on the GBA. I was obsessed with my collection, thought about it all the time, but rarely had any time to play it. I spend 50% of my day on my computer. Running a classic game on an emulator was only a mouse click away, and it satisfied my craving for nostalgia. Now I have switched to linux, I installed some really nice emulators: Mednafen to play TG-16, SNES, and Game Boy and Fusion to play Genesis. I realized that I had an awful lot of money (for me) tied up in physical hardware. My small condo was riddled with systems on display, hooked up to a CRT or LCD monitor. I decided that I needed to “share” my systems with others by selling some of them off. To make room and to save my sanity, I listed the Atari 600XL and the Apple II on craigslist, priced to sell. Tired of playing game boy games on the small screen of the GBA, I was in the market for either a Super Game Boy cartridge or a Game Boy Player and GameCube. But I already had full screen game boy emulation on my PC. Then I did the unthinkable: I sold my prized collection: 2 GBA’s, 18 game boy carts, 12 GBA carts, and an Everdrive GB, for a steal. I am toying with the idea of selling the remaining three systems TG-16, Genesis, and SNES with Everdrives for $100 each. In a perfect world, I would have the space to store all these systems and more, the money to buy physical cartridges and display them on my walls, and the sanity to organize and appreciate them. I envy the retro game collectors on YouTube, for the history that they are saving is truly valuable.
  7. What are your thoughts of this system for someone too poor to get into the real Neo Geo collecting game? Thanks.
  8. I just sold 2 GBA SP-101's, 12 GBA carts including Castlevania Doublepack, 19 GB carts, and an Everdrive GB for only $150!
  9. I was on CL today and saw this post. It really pissed me off that someone was passing off a clone machine as a SNES.
  10. I have gotten my hands on the following Neo Geo games in Mame, as well as these other 90's competitors to the Neo Geo. It amazes me how much detail can be packed into a game running on the now obsolete 68000 and Z80 processors. The downside, is that these games are spoiling me. I now have a little difficulty playing the SNES and Genesis versions because the characters look so small in comparison. 1941 - Counter Attack 19XX: War Against Destiny, The 64th. 11. I am running Linux Mint. MAME .160 comes in the repos. It's not that great, for the reasons mentioned above. It doesn't run well with most of the roms I throw at it. Also, it lacks a front end by default. I am not that satisfied with Gnome Video Arcade, the front-end that comes in the repos. I installed Wine, so that I can install any number of MAME versions for windows. I am very happy with MAME32 Plus! Plus! 0.119. Wish I could afford to buy myself a Capcom arcade cabinet and a NEO GEO cabinet, but for now I am really happy with emulating the fabulous beat em ups of the 1990's. Maybe I will invest in an Xgaming X-Arcade joystick.
  12. Hello All, I was lucky enough to be born in 1969. I was in the arcades in the 1980's during the golden age of arcades playing donkey kong and pacman when they were brand new games. Then in the 1990s during the rise of the arcades I was a college grad going to the mall on the weekends trying to decide between the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo as my home console. Both pretty much blew me away in terms of graphics and sound. Then one day while walking through the mall in the Bay Area I stumbled into a special gaming store that I had never seen before. The store was filled with about 5 large tube televisions, each hooked up to something I had never seen before: The Neo Geo. I just stood there are stared trying to wrap my mind around what I was seeing. It was pretty amazing, and I was hooked. Then, when I found out the price, I realized this was something I would have to wait for. But I will never forget seeing the Neo Geo for the first time in all its glory.
  13. Here is a sad 2600 that I found today for sale on CL for $160. It looks as if it was just unburied at the Alamagordo trash site. You would think someone wanting over $150 bucks would at least blow the sand off of it, and perhaps put it in a more appealing location before snapping a photo for CL. I would love a mint Darth Vader unit, guess I will have to keep looking.
  14. As long as the games are getting played and enjoyed, it doesn't matter how you do it. I subscribe to several retro game collectors channels on YouTube. It appears that some folks are so laser focused on building a full collection of cartridges, that they lose sight of the purpose of these carts in the first place. Collecting for the NES comes to mind, where thousands of dollars can be spent on Stadium Events, which by all accounts isn't even a very fun game to play. At least the Shmups on the turbografx are fun.
  15. I do the exact same thing. I pull up and organize TG-16 games using mednafen, which is quick and easy. Then I end up with my favorites, organized into nice categories, to play on the everdrive.
  16. after reading the first 5 pages of this thread yesterday, it seems most of us have purchased the everdrive to go with our systems, with good reason. anyone here opposed to the everdrive? just curious.
  17. i realize that pcengine is the cheaper way to go, but has anybody here bought the tg-16 recently for sentimental reasons, because they are rare, or it was what you had in the 90's? i remember going to my friends house and he had the tg-16 and was playing bonk. i didn't have $ at the time, but now the cost of the system is reasonable, especially compared to modern consoles.
  18. after buying my first tg-16 on ebay, i quickly started looking for a 2nd one. i found one on CL for $150, so i grabbed that one also.
  19. I wish Nintendo would sell, to any of us that are interested, the rights to play all the games in a given console's library. How much could they charge? I would be willing to pay $300 for the SNES library for example. But Nintendo doesn't own the rights to many of the games that have come out on the system. Yes they own plenty, but not all. To do this they would have to re-license them from Capcom, etc. which costs great deals of money and would be cost prohibitive. Besides, many of the companies that produced games for consoles in the 80's and 90's are no longer in business. Nintendo clearly does not like rom pirates, but they refuse to provide us with a viable alternative. They would prefer you forget all about the games of your childhood and buy a Switch or two. It appears that their hands are tied. Nintendo's failure to provide any legal way to purchase these games makes them abandonware. But wait! Here comes the NES classic edition! Play 30 games on a miniature NES for $60. How cute. But they made no where near enough of these units, so you can buy a scalped one for $150. But wait, the NES classic edition has been hacked! Now you can play almost all the NES library on your hacked, scalped NES Classic. Thanks Nintendo.
  20. Hi All, Because its one of my favorite systems of all time, I have been delving deep into the games on the SNES. My daughter is a huge fan of the Beat Em Ups, and we have settled on playing Final Fight 2. The graphics in my mind are as good as the Neo Geo (but I am biased) When I bought the system in 1993, I only had about 12-15 cartridges. Prince of Persia blew me away at the time, and a friend and I finished the game in a week. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of RPG, Simulation, or Sports games, but I really love the 2D run to the right platformers. Here is my list of exceptional games for the system. 3 Ninjas Kick Back Adventures of Kid Kleets, The Aero the Acro-Bat 2 Aero the Acro-Bat Aladdin Alien 3 American Tail, An - Fievel Goes West Animaniacs Ardy Lightfoot Arkanoid - Doh It Again A.S.P. 21. Hello. I am the proud owner of a TG-16 and an everdrive. My 11 year old daughter loves playing all 3 Bonk's. It is her favorite system despite having the SNES and Genesis as well in her room. I plan to go through this lengthy thread to see what I can learn about the system. Just wanted to chime in with our love of the system.
  22. I did not own a Genesis back in the day, but certainly would have if money was not an issue (I had the SNES). But today I have all 3 of that era: SNES, Genesis, and Turbografx-16 with an Everdrive for each. I much prefer the graphics on the games of the 16 bit era to the madness that is today's ultra realistic violence. I have been a gamer all my life, but any money that would typically go into an Xbox One, PS4, or the NIntendo Switch is instead budgeted for the vintage systems which I get far more enjoyment out of. I bought the Genesis model II for $30 on CL and was surprised to learn it had the coveted Sony cxa1645m chip. The games look crisp and clean on my television set. Compared to the SNES, the Genesis is blazingly fast. This makes fighting, action platformers, and beat em up games addictive and a real challenge to play. The library of games for the Genesis is massive, including the Japanese games. I am incredibly fond of Shmups which rival those on the Turbografx-16, and probably cost a lot less to purchase. Right now I am in the discovery stage, I want to spend time with each game running in the Fusion emulator under linux. It is going to take some time, but I want to recognize the genre, and picture the game when I hear the title. I am not going for a complete collection. I want to compile a list of the games that appeal to me the most, so that I can purchase the cartridges for those.
  23. It really was an exciting time. Back in 1992 $199 for the SNES (like $350 today) was a lot of money to spend on a console when you are a college grad with limited funds. The games cost a fortune: between $30 and $60, so which ones were worth the money? But it was gonna be worth it because the graphics were "arcade quality". It would be like having an entire arcade in your home! I was an "Atari guy", so I never owned the NES nor the Master System. I was for the most part unbiased. For months, every time I went into a mall, I would look at the backs of all the games to see the screen shots. We didn't have the internet available to us or great game review sites yet. One strength of the Genesis was a ton of great sports games, but I wasn't into sports at all. For me, it all came down to the pack-in. The "mature" Street Fighter II appealed to me more (I had seen a lot of fighting games on the Neo Geo) than the manic game play of Sonic the Hedgehog. The die was cast, and I became a Super Nintendo owner.
  24. I went through 700 SNES roms (took me a week) on an emulator pulling each of them up and judging them good or bad. Now I am 100 roms into the Genesis library and I am having a really hard time. The difference in graphics is stunning. The winner of the console wars? The turbografx-16 because Shmups.
  25. What makes it even harder for me is that I have an everdrive for every console I own. Nobody on CL seems to know what that is or what its worth. I got an offer of $150 for a TG-16 with an everdrive included and a $60 offer for a Genesis with an everdrive.
