Unfortunately, no. Sniping is still the standard for any regular auction and eBay has no interest in ending the practice. Everything about eBay is set up to favor the buyers since they are what drives the business. So as long as so many buyers prefer to take a quick shot right at the end of an auction to save money (which may not even be true) there will be no extending of the time to help out the seller. This is why I like to sell everything as a Buy It Now and to avoid the hassle. Granted, regular auctions do have the best potential for a max sale but I usually find a price that I'm happy selling my items at and don't worry too much about what I may miss out on bid-wise. I only post regular auction sales when I know the item is rare or desired enough to generate decent bidding.
If I had my way, Silent Auctions would be an option on eBay. Where everyone bids the max amount they are willing to pay and no one sees anyone else's bid. At the end of the auction time, the highest overall bid wins. I doubt they ever allow such a concept though unless they find that it would mean more profit for themselves.
