I read this with interest, having just picked up a 130XE. I owned an 800XL when I was a kid, so that was my first love, and I bought one again when I got back into collecting all of the hardware I owned when I was younger. I've since bought a 65XE (as backup!) and another 800XL. I personally love the styling of both the XL and XE ranges, and I'm actually a fan of the XEGS styling, too (I bought one of those as well!). As far as the OP asking why the 130XE isn't the 'go-to' machine these days, I know lots of people have intimated something similar, but I think a very large part of the reason is nostalgia, and lack of education. In my own case, I prefer to use my 800XL mainly because it has that very tangible nostalgia attached to it. Having said that, the 65XE does have better video output (I use a 5-pin 'Monitor' to SCART cable to connect all of them except the XEGS, obviously). As for lack of education, I don't know enough about (nor probably care about) the reasons why the extra RAM in the 130XE is useful. With family life etc. I don't get a chance to 'hobby' as much as I'd like, so it's mostly games I use my Ataris for these days. I might hunt out a list of games that will only run on the 130XE (or machines with 128KB, in any case), but that's probably about as far as I would go.

GFL is great in its own way, and largely, as you say, because of the first-person perspective. Super Bowl Sunday by Avalon is indeed on my list, as Super Sunday, released in Europe by Nexus.

Interesting point! I'd not even considered watching them on anything but my LCD TV. I'm now thinking that I might watch them on the 14"CRT in my man-cave. I could connect my laptop to my upscaler and then send the signal via Scart to the TV, playing the sound through my soundbar!

A shame - I was just about to order the first three issues, too Am I still able to? I feel your pain though - as a graphic designer, I've had many personal projects go south before as a result of others.

I'll need to fire up my Mastertronic re-release cassette (UK). I used to play this a LOT on my 800XL, but pretty sure I had a cracked disc version at the time.

I have the original Datasoft cassette version. I've not tried it yet, so no idea if it works or not, but if anyone here has any interest in me running it to see if it exhibits the same control problems etc. I'm happy to?

I'm also in the 'leave it alone' camp I think, at least of late. I'm not averse to doing a bit of soldering, but with my Ultimate Cart I don't think I really have the need for a RAM upgrade, and the SCART output I have from my 800XL and 65XE to my 14" CRT is good enough for the time being I think. I wouldn't rule a video mod out completely, as I think RGB on a bigger flat screen could be good in the future, but for now, the little free time I have to enjoy my machines, I want to spend actually playing the games I love from my youth.

Still haven't got round to reading this but had it for ages! Good prompt, too, for his next volume, The Amiga Years, which he still aims to deliver by the end of the year.
