Tile Layer Pro is a great tool. I've ripped the character sprites from Super C, but haven't really messed with the first Contra. Make a duplicate rom of Contra in Tile Layer Pro and attempt to find a head/leg or whatever. Then cover those sprites in that area with numbers and letters and then play the duplicate rom and take screenshots. That's the easiest way to hack NES game graphics to be honest.
