  1. I remember the kerfuffle about a year ago when it appeared that GwSS modified the NABU ROM to make it look like he was the author. FF to now, and we are seeing that this appears to not be a one-off prank, but another episode from a guy who seems to have a bit of a history behind himself. Old videos are being re-uploaded, and the players seem to be celebrating its one year anniversary. Kinda weird if you ask me.

  2. "Fingers crossed I can get it done soon.  Believe me when I say I want this done as badly as everyone else, and I feel really bad about how long it has taken."

No problem, I'm still looking forward to the MkII.

  3. 4 hours ago, J-Data said:

You can get everything but the PCB and the VGA cable at DigiKey, so that may be the closest thing to a kit out there.   I still have a bare board up for grabs, or for $7 you can order you own and have 4 left over to share.

Thanks, but the boards aren't the issue, it's avoiding BOM hell. :)  And I'd love to have someone share their Digikey BOM with me if they've built one up because I'm not having a bunch of luck sourcing the parts on my own...

I'll just wait a bit longer for the Mk2 to come out, but thank you anyways.

  4. Downdate:

I whimsically tried an old 128MB compact flash, and it worked perfectly in the 1200. As one final attempt with the 4Gb card, I used a vintage Thinkpad with PCMCIA slot and formatted to FAT (instead of FAT32) but the Amiga still failed to open it. So at this point it looks like "Dane Electric 4GB CF" is incompatible with some part of this set up. It looks like I'll need to dig through some old cameras to see if there is something slightly larger I can use than the 128MB, so that I can do a Whdload setup.

It probably isn't compatible, but you ought to try partitioning it into two smaller partitions as a last ditch effort.

As for old cameras, I bought one the other week so that I could use its on-camera formatting utility to format CF cards for use in our Motoman robots. Formatting it on Windows won't work for the Motoman.

  5. The Vampire is in...WOOHOO! Got a nifty Kipper2k CPU slot adapter so that the Vampire didn't have to be crushed under the power supply chassis...

I took a look at the Kipper adapter as well, but I was concerned about having my V2 hanging out in the breeze. What keeps yours from working its way out?

  6.

Ummm - not sure. Kid is asleep now but anyway I thought that you just added files to the jump/flash drive and then just selected the game to play

That's pretty much all there is to it. And as far as I know, you can't even write to them from the Amiga (because each .ADF file represents an individual floppy). Anyone else know if this is correct?

  7. Update. I've (OK well my son) has tried smaller USB drives. They work for a while but then fail. Then the gotek screen 'just show dashes' or 'you must replace volume 'gamename'.

(Me - this is why I didn't want to go this route - if it ain't plug in play - F--- it. My time is very limited. Glad the son is willing to figure this out for me...)

    Help would be appreciated.

Hmmm, mines still working, I haven't had a failure as of yet.Is it getting written to continuously?

  8. Try a 4GB or smaller USB drive. I couldn't get mine to work until I used the smaller drive.

Not to beat a dead horse, but...

We can add a re-capped ZX Spectrum +2 to the list of my computers that have taken a bath. :)

And I have modified my procedure, I now rinse my board in 91% IPA to dry it out (the IPA absorbs the water left over after rinsing the vinegar off) before using my hot-air rework station to dry it off the rest of the way. Much quicker.

He's a picture of it after the re-cap, sound mod installation, and the removal of the UHF modulator (I used the hole for the video connector for the audio jack) as well as a shot of the back of the board. It really does look brand new.

And to be fair, there wasn't any leaky caps (that I saw anyways) when I replaced them. So there wasn't any trace damage that I could observe.

  9. I've gotten one of those "We Care" baggies too. I bought some replacement drive belts for my MSX and the seller sent it in an envelope. Somewhere along the line the package got snagged in something and the belts were ripped out. I really couldn't blame the Post Office, and the seller sent me a new one for free. This time sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard...

  10. Keep in mind that the negative terminal is the one that's going to suffer from the "Redox reaction", meaning a lot of corrosion. And since it's tied to the ground plane, it is going to be a bear to get unsoldered since the heat of your iron will radiate outward with the copper plane.

Clipping the battery leads, and then trying to get the tabs off with tweezers could be very difficult.

  11. Alcohol and 409 seem to work pretty well for cleanup.

The only reason I see to use vinegar is to remove rust.

I tried using that and a dozen other things to clean a machine after my fire. It was pretty much a waste of time.

If a machine is in good shape, it isn't needed. If a machine is in bad enough shape it might benefit from it... it probably won't work even after soaking.

Will vinegar harm anything? The cleaning strength stuff might if you soak things too long. It is an acid.

It does a nice job of getting at where the alkaline gets that is next to impossible otherwise.

Also in places that you wouldn't see. As for harming anything, no, it shouldn't.

Don't leave it in there for more than a few hours without checking on it. And be sure to dry it off thoroughly after you rinse it thoroughly.

  12. Meh, to each their own. So far I've done it this way for both of my 4000's, my 5 2000's, and all 8 or so of my memory expansion boards for my 500's.

I'm either correct, or extremely adept at dodging bullets...

But don't my word for it, I learned of the trick at one of the Jamma forums, and they do it all of the time. But like eightbit, at first I thought that they were crazy as well. :)

  13. You're welcome!

It absolutely critical that you remove the battery and clean up any leakage. Should there be any leakage (and I would do this even if there wasn't), take the motherboard out of the case and soak it in a tub of white vinegar. Let it soak for a few hours, and use an old electric toothbrush to cleanup the board. Rinse the board using regular tap water (or if you like, distilled water), dry it out next to a space heater for a few days, and put it back into the case.

  14. This will get you started.

Get yourself an old Fireball drive, or something know to work with Amigas at least (avoid the Seagate Hawk drives).

Get yourself a Gotek floppy drive replacement.

Find the Workbench .ADFs for your version of Kickstart in the usual places.

Copy the .ADF files onto a USB stick and create your Selector.adf file using HxCEdit (as pointed out by another member here in the forum).

Boot up the 2000 using the Gotek and select the image that you want to install first.

    Go from there.

Did you yank out the old battery yet?

  15. Why use Kickstart 3.1 rom if you plan on playing adf files from the gotek ? You'll have many incompatibilities with games that don't work. Most ECS/OCS games require 1.2/1.3/2.04 Kickstart roms. You'll have to resort to ReloKick or similar programs to avoid incompatibilities.

3.1 on the other hand, is a great option if you're planning on using your 600 a bit more. That means installing a humble accelerator (ACA,Furia or Vampire), some extra ram and a CF/SD card for a hard disk. Then you can get really going by installing all the games you want in WHDLoad version!

Currently my Amiga 600 is more or less like that : Kickstart 3.1 , Furia 020 Accelerator, A604n Memory expansion, SD2IDE adapter, KA47 IDE Riser and an 8GB Sandisk Ultra SD Card.
