  1. ------ Joke of the Day ------

    Americans can't switch from

    pounds to kilograms overnight.

    That would cause mass confusion.

I agree.   I set my weather app to Celcius and have been working on converting in my head.  I get it mostly right.

We Canadians officially made the switch back in the 1970s and we _still_ used a mixed system. Packaged goods are mostly metric sizes, of course (e.g. milk comes in 1, 2, or 4 litre cartons, but butter comes in 1 lb blocks) and highway distances are measured in kilometers.

      Most everything else is mixed:

I have no idea what my height is in centimeters, but in terms of temperature I use Celsius. When I go to the deli, I ask for 1/4 pound of whatever, and the clerk clearly understands my request. Most recipes use cups or tablespoons as a measurement unit.

As a Canadian I find I use both equally well.  I notice that there is a tendency to use metric for more precise measurements, but imperial for less accurate numbers.

For example, if someone asked the distance to another town you might say 44 kilometers, but if it were a rough guess you'd say "About 30 miles".
