I used to love me some Renegade back in the arcade days, but playing it in MAME seems like a chore compared to my (admittedly distant) memories. Maybe it's because I've gotten used to a more standardized control model in fighting games that's been developed since then?

How the merciful hell are you guys so good at video games? Did you take a class in it or something? I've owned this game for 35 years and thought I was decent at it. Got a 40,000-plus score first try and came here to see if it was even worth posting. Guess not.

Good advice. Biggest problem I have with the red bugs is when they cross over in opposite directions -- it's really hard to zip over to the other side of the screen to get a right-going bug after you've potted a left-going one. If your ground doesn't get cut by the time you reach the third wave of red bugs, the horizontal space the bug covers from the ground to the top window seems to be three windows rather than the usual two. I almost always lose a row at this point, but they seem to slow down and return to normal behaviour after that.

I really need some help. I use all the common advice (keep only one lane open, remembering the skull, white cow, red cow, brown cow pattern). Yet I always get stuck somewhere around 1,500 pts. -- everything just gets too fast (yes, I know my top score is 1,900+ but I have NO idea how I got that far. That's my biggest frustration with video games). Is there any way to get ALL of the brown cows in a formation that's simple to herd them in without losing them at the higher speeds? I've watched Scrabbler15's video but I think I need it explained to me verbally.

I previewed S.S. Mission and Wonder Boy on Internet Archive (the other two weren't available). Not looking forward to S.S. Mission (I'm awful at vertically-scrolling shooters) but Wonder Boy is a BLAST. I've been trying to remember the name of that game for decades since I played it on the SMS and now I know.
