It was very nice out today, and lately...But, although it never added up, we've had snow 3 times this year already.

  4. So, "brand new" cannot only include open box on eBay, but "still brand new, used a handful of times. "

But, by its definition, it’s like saying someone whose only had sex a couple of times is still a virgin. At least he defined his redefining so we still know what he means. Just don’t like to see the brand new category on sites like this clogged up with opens box and slightly used - those should go in used: like new

      ^Exactly right!

I think he has a Brand New brain...Barely used.

I too agree that calling it brand new is wrong in these cases. If I selling something slightly used I describe it as "like new" or "mint condition." But as long as the items listed as new that aren't really are selling for less than NIB, I see not ethical issue, just annoying.

  5. Why we still need DVDs/Blu-Rays: Thought I would check out Northern Exposure from 30 years ago. Turns out no one streams it because NBC doesn't want to pay the music royalties for songs used in the show. Yet, you can still buy new DVDs or BluRays. Go figure.

The DVDs for WKRP don't have the songs that were actually played on the show, because royalties.

@thanatos A lot of shows have that, even in streaming. With others, they don't bother, for whatever reason.

  6. Just watch Aliens after watching Alien. 3 times the budget, one third the acting.

The Alien was terrifying, so imagine a whole colony full of them!   I thought he pulled it off well.  But to each his own...

@GoldLeader Concept was good and big scale for Aliens, I agree. Although, I thought their was surprisingly little close-up action of the actual aliens until the very end. I have to admit I think Cameron's weakest point is directing acting, although he is good at the big action and sets. Weaver and the Bishop Android (Henricksen) did very well, although Henricksen seemed under-utilized. Cameron was the writer and director of Aliens, but not the original. I watched the Special Edition, so its possible I also saw a lot of extra fluff that was cut out of the Theatrical version. Overall, Cameron had big shoes to fill.

    4. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

Yeah he did!  And then he also did Terminator 2, which I thought was better and had far more plot than Terminator.

    1. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

I was the singer in a kind of punk/metal crossover band called Anarchy Dragon or A.D.  One night I was watching David Letterman and (after mentioning Hawaii) he mentioned Don Ho,...Then he said something about (some event) being After Don Ho which he then said, "That would be A.D."  Quickly I grabbed a digital field recorder and backed up my DVR to grab a sample of Letterman saying "That would be A.D." as If he's introducing our band....I think a handful of tape demos have that at the beginning of a song...So,  That's the last time I thought about Don Ho ;)

Nice band intro! Mine was while watching a late night rerun of of a 30 year old television show (Mad About You) where he was mentioned. first time in over 30 years probably.

  9. So, I guess the new word for gamer geeks to use is “edge” or “edgy”? Does that mean we’re done with “ cringe” and “ asking for a friend”?

  11. Do you remember the eight inch thick 48 inch LCD TVs from c. 2000? I saw one by a dumpster this week with a remote and piece of paper taped to it saying Works! Free! Too big and heavy even though it's kind of a bit of history in the making.

I remember the LCDs and projectors battling it out back then.

Speaking of digital projectors, I remember back in 2000 when I was looking around for home theater option me and my girlfriend ended up looking at one at a church with an 8 year old digital projector that was so big it had its own room in the back. The lens cup on its front was like 8 inches across or so and the projector itself was easily 200cm to a side and 80cm high. That probably cost a mint when it was new as well.

    3. Max_Chatsworth

      Max_Chatsworth

Depending on how thick you mean by "thick"....but many of the LCD tv's in those days were LCD "projection" , especially the thick ones.  It would have a tiny LCD screen in back...that was projected forward to the display surface. Essentially killing any clarity LCD gave you over CRT.  It was ridiculous time when the TV manufacturers wanted to make tv's big enough to compete with the larger plasma tv's, wanted to claim "LCD", and wanted it to be priced competitively.

    4. thanatos

      thanatos

Ah yes, the DLP rear projections ones.  I kinda forgot about those.  Way smaller than the regular tube rear projection, but still bulky.

When I said $10k+, I was talking about the first LCD/Plasma flatscreens.

  14. So, I’m looking into a mini PC such as NUC or Beelink. Some of them have a spec such as “1.8 GHz, up to 3.8 GHz with max turbo”. Honestly, I don’t remember Turbo on a PC since the 486 Gateways with the Turbo button. I think that was a question of power economy. I see some that are 1.8 GHz to 3.8 and others 2.8 to 3.2. Is the lower to higher 1.8 to 3.8 the better choice?

    1. Keatah

      Keatah

The correct choice will depend on your usage case. These ain't yo' grampa's turbo buttons.

Emulation up to the Wii U and beyond, Steam and GOG games. Games, games, games. I could use my previous laptop, which has an i5. I was thinking i7, but you can’t beat the price of something you already have, weighed against its age and the slightly greater hassle vs a NUC.

@Lord Mushroom I'm saying I type something in the search field and hit enter and it changed the last word I typed and adds two or three wore words I've never enter before. It uses it's suggestion instead of what I type. Other times it just puts a different word in somewhere to what I typed. I like the auto-complete, but it is getting carried way these past few months.

  16. From a 70's TV show, this was apparently a pickup line for secretaries then: "Is that electric or are you just fast." (Cliffhangers! Episode 3)

My girlfriend is watching 1970's TV like Three's Company. What constituted normal behavior back then would be considered sexual harassment by today's standards.

I'm sure you're referring to series where you get involved and then they don't finish it...But I guess it's because I'm still pretty new to Netflix,...That, well,  I'm seeing lots of great stuff!

    3. Laner

      Laner

Netflix purposefully limits shows to 2 or 3 seasons; then refocuses their energies elsewhere, because new shows tend to make a bigger splash (i.e. brings in more subscriptions)  than season 4 or 5 of the big debut from a few years' back.

    4. Swami

      Swami

I dislike shows ending that I’m invested in and wondering if I’m going to be able to get into something new I’d don’t know much about. Some shows do get too goofy after a few seasons though. Dark Matter, for instance when everything started being a slapstick in season 3.

@x=usr(1536) Thanks. I will look into these amazon links. The issue I had with a Radioshack HDMI to composite similar looking to the one linked that I used with my PC laptop to a Sony trinitron 480p CRT was every 20 min streaming Amazon, it would go black and stay that way until I unplugged/replugged the HDMI and restarted my browser/amazon, etc.

  20. After 25 years, given the name Ace of Base, the growl and the beginning, the vocal tones, Raggae rhythm, etc., I was quite shocked to find that "The Sign" is sung by an ABBA like group with a former Neo-Nazi band member.

My best friend let me know about this about 3 or 4 years ago.  I was surprised as well.  I decided to do my own research on this recently when I was talking about it with another friend, just to make sure I had my facts correct and I wasn't spreading misinformation, which is so easy to do online now-a-days because it is everywhere and people lack critical thinking skills, but anyhow, I read up, and yes, the male lead in his younger days was a Neo-Nazi member, but got out of it and reformed himself before starting Ace of Base.

I think they are trying to tap into the fact that many don't feel normal or accepted.   (Fast forward 15-20 years and realize 1) that is just about everyone 2) why be normal?)

  22. Samsara continues, but at least it's Friday. :)

  23. Watching Fargo, Season 4, which takes place in 1950. Gang leader played by Chris Rock is talking about starting credit cards and trying to sell the idea to banks and then sees the Diner's Club credit card. It's just weird seeing people revise history since it was "charge cards" until the 1970s. I suppose they thought nobody under 40 wouldn't know what a charge card was. It was MasterCharge before it was MasterCard. I know it's fiction anyways, but it's still like "wait, that's not right."

Yeah the "Bless" thing was a quick shout out to missionaries in Africa or something, yet he put it in the chorus, traditionally reserved for the theme of the song or at least (some of) the most important words...I think there's 3 kinds of songs...Ya know, I think I'm gonna continue this thought on a Status Update...
