  1. I have checked everything carefully though that doesn't assure that I didn't miss something. I know that I didn't lift any solder rings or traces and I wiped the solder rings with wick top and bottom to eliminate any solder bridges before installing the sockets. I still have a lot of chips to socket but it is baffling. I have another 130XE that is dead and I socketed the entire board and checked every chip and never figured out what was wrong.
  2. Every time I turn the computer on, it does something different. Today it booted to self test. If I insert a BASIC cart it boots to BASIC. I thought that the BASIC IC might be bad so I removed the IC, installed a socket and replaced the BASIC IC. Now it boots to self test in black and white except the words "SELF TEST" are green.
  3. Today when I turned it on I got a screen full of random characters and a rolling screen. I have replaced the CPU and the ANTIC; GTIA is next.
  4. Another XE, an 800XL, and two 600XLs work perfectly using the same PSU.
  5. I removed the RAM, installed sockets and replaced the RAM with non MT RAM. Today I booted it with the Omniview OS and I wanted to see how long it would work. After a few minutes it started changing the letters that were on the screen. Then the screen just froze in place. I tried typing but the computer had stopped operating. I am now in the process of removing the ICs and installing sockets.
  6. My SYSCHECK 2.2 said there was no problem with memory.
  7. I have had computers that didn't work because of bad ram but I've never had one that worked intermittently due to bad RAM. I'll probably go ahead and replace it because it is MT RAM and I will just cut out the RAM chips so there is little chance of lifting a trace.
  8. I am working on a recently purchased 130XE that appeared to be in good working order. Yesterday when I attempted to run the internal diagnostics the screen went black. I tried to restart it and nothing happened. I determined that it was a heat issue somewhere because it was turned off for a while it would boot up when turned on. After a few seconds the screen would start to flicker then some random characters that appeared to be from graphics mode 1 or 2 would appear and the screen would go black. Today I booted it up and it stayed stable for 6 minutes before exhibiting the erratic behavior. The only chip that gets warm is the CPU. I will start with that but I know it will probably be an aggravating process since nothing is socketed.
  9. I tried one of those boards on a 600XL and I could not get any composite video. The board also has one less resistor.
  10. Has anyone ever tried using alcohol to loosen the adhesive?
  11. Today I tried again to perform a SuperVideo 2.1 on an 600XL; I am 0 for 5. I am getting a chroma signal. When I plug the chroma lead into the composite jack, I get some highly agitated color images. I get nothing when I plug in the Luma or the composite. I know I can install a UAV but at this point that is just accepting defeat.
  12. On the last 3 UAV installs I grounded the UAV by splitting the grounding tab and grounding the outside half to the monitor ground. This completely eliminated the vertical lines. It worked on a 600XL, 800XL, and 130XE. I think I will try grounding the 4050 in the same way on a computer without a UAV.
  13. I just finished installing a UAV in a 600XL and the video is great. No vertical lines.
  14. You can buy an assembled board for about $10 to perform that upgrade. I did one on my 7800 and the composite is really good. It was good enough that I don't think it is worth the time and effort to do the UAV on that machine.
  15. I have seen several diagrams of a way to get a composite video output from the RF video box but the diagrams never look complete to me. The diagram earlier in this topic for example. I would like to see a diagram that shows connections to components if anyone has personal knowledge of this upgrade.
  16. Did this project ever get completed? I would like to see the final connections for the composite connections.
  17. Those are the clearest pictures for the UAV that I have seen. You should sent them to the Brewing Academy to include in their UAV manual.
  18. Has anyone done this upgrade that can furnish a clearer picture or diagram of what connects to what?
  19. Are the files on this link XEX files?
  20. I have performed this mod 3 times and it fail to produce video every time so I always gave up and went with a UAV. At least now I know it wasn't entirely my fault.
