  1. Syscheck indicates that my 800XL has a bad dram at location U9. Replacing U9 has no effect. I have replaced every IC on the board and nothing has changed. I believe this indicates a short; if so, where should I start looking. I replaced the socket at U9 and didn't see anything wrong there.

I found the Sobola schematic but I couldn't see a path to Chroma.

I held the MB up to a very bright light and I was able to trace the Chroma circuit to FB3. All of the video connection points are ferrite beads just to the left of the RF box. FB1 is Luma, FB2 is Composite, and FB3 is Chroma.

Can anyone tell me where the UAV connections are made on an 800XL PAL with the FREDDIE chip. I know that I could cut traces and wire directly to the DIN connections but I hate to do it that way. The standard connections are not present, at least not in the same places and Chroma is connected.

I thought I had it figured out; I determined by T&E that color in can come from the top of the left-most resistor in the row just below the 4050 chip.  I got composite, I lifted the left end of a ferrite bead (FB1 I think) and connected Composite to the vacant spot.  Another ferrite bead (FB2) appeared to connect to Luma but when I connected it I completed the S-Video connection. Something is amiss and I might just go ahead and cut some traces.  I don't have a schematic and it is difficult to follow traces that jump from one side of the board to the other and are also blocked by ICs, resistors, etc.

  4. I have/had two XF551s, I booted my system with a DOS 2.5 disk and everything was normal then I attempted to boot a different disk with SMARTDOS. The drive made a screeching noise then I got a boot error message. I removed that disk and reinserted the DOS 2.5 and got a boot error. Several other disks gave the same result. Then I hooked up my other 551 and it worked normally. I opened up both drives and switched mechs and found that both drives had good PCBs. One mech worked with each PCB and the other mech worked with neither PCB. I have never tried any disk drive repair so wjere should I start?

  5. It definitely does ANTIC banking.  There is a version of Atariwriter Plus that was modified by Newell to produce an 80 column version.  The modified version will only run on a 130 XE or a computer that acts exactly like an XE.  The Newell memory upgrade and the COMPY SHOP upgrades are the only ones that will run the modified version.

@hueyjones70:  Is it possible to take a picture of the underside of the system board as well?

    Thanks!

The first picture is the underside of the Newell Board.   I just finished reassembling the computer and I am having issues with the keyboard connector so I am loathe to mess with it anymore.  There are much better ways to get multiple OSes today.  The APEWARP OS 32 in 1 comes to mind.

Pictures would be great!  (Both sides of the board, please.)  If it's the same board the pictures can be used to help verify the changes I made.

There is a switch that selects the banking method, the drawing shows the connections.  the drawing also lists the connections to the SALLY.  They are made on the back of the board.  It seems a big difference here is that pins 12-16 are lifted from the MB and connected to the RAMBO and WIZTRONICS upgrades.  Newell leaves them connected to the MB.  The drawing indicates the SALLY chip and it should be the PIA chip.

  8. I purchased an 800XL that had a 32 in 1 OS installed but the wires were disconnected and the wires are colored gray, purple and black.  The installation instructions tell where to connect white, red, and black wires.  There is a white wire but was cut at the edge of the connector.  With the module positioned correctly the wires from left to right  are gray,  purple, cut white, black.  Could anyone tell me how the red, white, and black wires in the instructions are located from left to right?

  9. Yesterday I repaired an 800XL by replacing the BASIC socket. This one had different symptoms and I thought it might be the MMU because when it booted with SYSCHECK all of the memory checked out. I took out the MMU socket (stock single wipe) cleaned up the socket area and installed a new double wipe. That eliminated the problem. That is two computers in as many days that I have repaired by replacing sockets.

  10. Yesterday I removed the stock single wipe BASIC socket and cleaned off all of the old solder and flux and flattened out the solder rings. I checked each with a magnifying glass to insure there were no broken traces. I then installed a new double wipe socket. I used a generous amount of solder. After inserting the BASIC chip, everything worked to perfection.

  11. I currently have an 800XL with a similar problem. On Wednesday the computer was working correctly, on Friday when I turned it on it booted to self test so I took everything apart swapped out BASIC, then ROM, still self test. SYS CHECK indicated that all memory was OK then with the next boot attempt I got a dark green screen. Sometimes it boots to self test most times it boots to a dark green screen. Occasionally if I insert a BASIC cart it will boot to basic but the green screen is predominant.
