  1. I am 42 years old and first played Sonic 2 on the Genesis more than 25 years ago. Tonight for the first time ever in my life, computer-controlled Tails contributed in a meaningful way, first accidentally killing an enemy as I was about to be hit with no rings, and second hitting the Hill Top Zone Robotnik boss for FOUR of the eight required hits. I have never seen this before. Ever.

So, clearly, the program is learning, Skynet style.  ?   In another 25 years, you'll be posting about how Tails displayed sentient behaviors.

...the future destruction of mankind begins with Tails.

They can put a man on the moon,...  but they probably shouldn't put Hitler's brain into a big mechanical shark...

  2. Street Fighter the Movie was so bad, but Street Fighter the Movie the Game is almost kinda fun.

Considering the home game is basically super street fighter 2 turbo with a hideous coat of paint, why wouldn't it be.

Wait street fighter the movie is great, as long as you just watch the Raul Julia scenes.

Now they need to have Street Fighter: The American Cartoon video game!

  3. This rusted out VA4 Genesis model 2 was on eBay. None of the rust was shown in the ad. The only internal shot was the revision on the motherboard. Guess that should have been my warning.

Just curious, did you compare Serial Numbers?  Either it's not the same or they took pics to avoid showing the rust.  That seller is Terrible though!  Thanks for the warning, and maybe put them in that thread here on AA about sellers to avoid (Bad Sellers on eBay or something like that).

    4. derFunkenstein

      derFunkenstein

They're not the same serial number. They're also not the same enclosure. The exterior of the system I got was dirty. There's actual dirt inside it.

  4. I love Animal Crossing New Horizons, but the premise is incredibly shady. Tom Nook is a totalitarian dictator. "Come live on an island with me! Also I control all commerce, run the banks, and define the currency. You have to spend your own money to develop the island, you can never leave, and I reap the profits."

  5. For folks on the fence about MiSTer, I wrote up an overview, buying guide, and some gameplay samples of many current cores in action: https://hothardware.com/reviews/mister-diy-console-fpga

  6. I love selling stuff on eBay to people with buyer's remorse, who then just make up issues in order to get a refund.

Same for me. Sold a 5200 multicart that was working perfectly the day I listed it for auction. Buyer then claimed that the multicart wouldn't boot. I asked him to validate the files on the SD card. He said "I don't have a computer." I asked how he planned on adding ROMs to the SD card if he didn't have a computer. He sent it back and I validated that all the files required were on the SD card. Wound up putting it up for auction again.

    3. derFunkenstein

      derFunkenstein

That's a bummer. Someone had a case of buyer's remorse in both cases, no doubt.

    4. Razzie.P

      Razzie.P

I had the opposite recently.  2 different purchases, both arrived with issues because of crappy packaging.  Offered to work with the seller to refund a small percentage, but they refused, so I used the return option.  In both cases, they tried to argue to ebay that it was "buyer's remorse."   I had to provide photos and a video (for a console) as proof.

Oddly, though, when they relisted the items, both were very clear in pointing out the defects up front, and both "buy now" prices were less than what they would have gotten had they simply worked with me to refund a percentage.

  7. Anybody in or around Bangor, ME? Gonna be there early Feb and looking for a retro shop or two to peruse while I'm there.

  8. Must've missed this XKCD when it came out, but it's pretty great (and relevant to our interests): https://xkcd.com/2189/

  9. Saturn ODEs can become readily available any time now. The Sanyo laser in my Saturn is dead, and I've bought two replacements that were supposedly compatible but I can't make either one work. :(

  10. NeoGeo MiSTer core goes official and 128 MB SDRAM boards go up for preorder on the same day? Guess I need to look at MiSTer.

  11. I'm free! Free! I've scheduled my Facebook account for permanent deletion, since they wait 30 days before actually deleting it.

  13. Still on the fence about the Mega Sg? I wrote around 8,000 words for The Tech Report, published this morning. https://techreport.com/review/34540/analogue-mega-sg-reviewed-cloning-a-sega-genesis-with-fpga-power

Oh, one quick correction! In the Renegade section you mention the Mega EverDrive X7 being able to play Genesis, Master System, and Game Gear games but the Mega EverDrive doesn't do Game Gear. It does do 32X games though, provided you've got the mushroom to stick it in. =)

    3. derFunkenstein

      derFunkenstein

@Jin thank you, that was supposed to say SG-1000. Elsewhere, it mentions that the Genesis couldn't play GG games because of the color palette, not sure why I got it wrong in that spot.

    4. Skippy B. Coyote

      Skippy B. Coyote

It's no worries, glad to be of help! I've watched and read a lot of reviews of the Mega Sg already and yours was the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak on convincing me I gotta get one. It'll be a couple months before I can budget for it, but in the meantime I did preemptively order two Retro-Bit 6-button Genesis controllers for it tonight.

no RAM cart support, even if you load a BIOS manually. Oh well. Maybe a future update will do it. Is there a ROM dump of the cart? That might trick the system into thinking there is one.

  15. I can't believe that AtGames purchased emulation house M2 over the weekend!

  16. Saw a CIB Cool Spot for Genesis today for $7 and I'm kicking myself for not buying it. Also, unpopular opinion: I'd rather play on a VA7 model 1 than a VA2 model 1 due to the 2's totally unlistenable distortion on several games (including SoR2)

Hey, that was back when 7-Up was the bomb too! It was SOOOO MUCH BETTER before they changed it into "all natural" 7-Up which all but ruined it. I mean if I wanted crap, I'd drink a Sprite right?

Find some Mexican 7-Up then... it's just the way it was back then.

    4. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

^Whoa! Is this true? I don't mean sugar...I think the chemicals (prolly mostly preservatives, no big deal) gave it its crisp aftertaste which left a subtle taste on your tongue, and that Entirely went away when they did "all natural"..It really was different afterwards.

  17. I was thinking about how I'd like to have less hardware from work in my home office and the Latitude E5570 that is my primary workstation crapped the bed. Maybe I need to think about rolling around in a big pile of money...

  18. Now is definitely a great time to get into the PS3. My local Disc Replay is doing buy five get five free. I got like 40 games yesterday for $100, including a bunch of classics.

PS3 is a great system and can double as a Blu-ray player. Those 40 games cost like 2200 when new.

    4. derFunkenstein

      derFunkenstein

They have just walls of Xbox 360 and PS3 games, and so much of what I got was marked at $5 or less. I think I paid $7.99 for two of them, and even some of the ones I paid for were only $0.99. I'm replacing some games I own digitally with physical copies to guard against the PSN store one day going down. Infamous, Uncharted, Disgaea, BioShock...I got a bunch of whole series in that.

  19. Played about 90 minutes on Beyond Oasis last night. Got the first two spirits, did some other stuff, and quit. Turned it on today, dead battery. /sadTrombone

Always make sure to replace the battery if it still has the original one. I lost my progress twice when playing ALTTP before I learned that lesson. It's cheap and easy to do with even the most basic soldering skills to replace it.

@jd_1138 that's super advice, and it's worked for my in the past.

@Jinks The nice thing is that I already have a full-time job that I like well enough, so I'm definitely interviewing them as much as they interview me. If something smells off, I'm out. So far so good, and I'm limiting my search to companies where I know somebody or they have a rep for being a good employer. If I was out of work I'd have to be much less picky.
